engineering?
A pilot wire is a communication cable between the two relays located at different
ends. Whenever a transmission line or equipment is to be protected by using a
differential relay, a wire is connected between the CTs (current transformer)
which are located in different ends of the protection zone to provide the path for the
circulating current produced in an abnormal condition(fault) which is sensed by the
relay and therefore breaker trips.

This protection is also called as Differential Pilot Wire Protection.

Also known as a draw wire. You will be cursing original installer did not leave one in
place if you want to instial additional wiring.

Its purpose is for pulling new wiring through conduit or cavities, Just tie it to the new
wiring and pull it through but also tie a new draw wire to the bundle for future use.
Much easier than trying yes very tying to push a fiber glass snake through the cavity
or pulling the existing wiring out with a draw wire attached and then pulling it all
back with the new wiring and hopefully a new draw wire.
