4 E L E C T R IC A L I NS T A L L A T ION OF T HE UMS /UC S 2100 S Y S T E M

T he electrical installation of the UMS/UCS 2100 System includes the following main parts:
B asic System Cable I nstallation
Sensor Input/Output Cable installation

4.1 B as ic S ys tem C able Ins tallation

For lay out of cables and specific terminal connections, please refer to the cable lay out
drawings and installation drawings delivered for the vessel in question.
T he basic cable installation to and between the main components of the UMS/UCS 2100
System can be divided into "Power Supply" connections and "Communication Cables"
connections.

4.1.1 P ower s upply C onnec tions

T he main components of the UMS/UCS 2100 are, as standard, to be supplied from the
following power sources, unless a different power source is specified in the in the installation
drawings, (please refer to the specific delivery extent list also):
Outstation: 24 V dc +30-25% incl. ripple
Alarm Panel: 24 V dc +30-25% incl. ripple
E xtended Alarm Display: 230 V ac ±10%, 50/60 Hz ±5%, and 24 V dc
+30-25% incl. ripple
Graphic Operator Station: 230 V ac ±10%, 50/60 Hz ±5%
Printer: 230 V ac ±10%, 50/60 Hz ±5%
All main components of the UMS/UCS 2100 System must be supplied individually from
separate main fuses in the ships power distribution board. This prevents the function-loss of
more than one main component in case that a main fuse blows.
T here are no special requirements to the cable types to be used for the power supply
connections. T he dimensions of the power supply cables must be selected to have sufficient
capacity to ensure that the voltage drop at the cabinet terminals does not exceed 1 V olt. T he
cable dimensions in the cable list is the recommended minimum dimension, e.g. minimum a
2 x 2.5 mm² cable for the supply of each Gamma PL C.
T he safety and installation regulations must be observed during installation.
Note: T he E xtended Alarm Display(s), the Graphic Operator Station(s) and the Printer(s)
included in the actual installation may be supplied from a 24 V dc/230 V ac inverter for
uninterrupted operation during blackouts.
Universal Monitoring and Control System - UMS/UCS 2100 Page 12 of 28
I nstallation Guidelines

4.1.1.1 24 V dc No-break P ower S upply

A 24 V DC power supply with battery backup must be provided. T he battery must be
adequately dimensioned to provide an emergency supply in the event of mains failures of the
approved duration. The classification society regulations for the specific ship must be taken
into consideration.
I n the case of a grounded power supply, the negative terminal must be connected centrally
to ship's ground.

4.1.1.2 24 V P ower S upply of C omputer Modules

T he 24 V DC power supply of all computer modules, e.g. Gamma CPU, SIO and Stella Net
modules are carried out via a Filter module FIM405 mounted inside the outstation. In case
of voluminous systems, it is possible to connect the modules in groups, each with it’ s own
filter module. T he total load on each FIM405 should not exceed the maximum allowed load
of this module.
I f there are additional E MC requirements, (e.g. CE , I CE 945) it might be necessary to install
a FI M403 Filter module instead of the FI M 405 Filter Module.
All 24 V supply-connections outside the outstation cabinets, which are connected to the
filtered internal 24 V power supply of a Computer module, must be covered out via screened
cables. I nside the screened cable it is not allowed to combine with signals, which are supplied
from an unfiltered 24 V supply.

4.1.1.3 24 V S upply of B inary Input/Output

T he supply of binary input/output (18 ... 32 V dc / 18 - 220 ac), e.g. the DE M401, DR M401,
R E M401 or IOM 402 can be supplied with the unfiltered 24 V power Supply.
I nputs with external supply can be connected in groups of four (4) input channels at the time,
which must have the same supply. T he selection is made by means of jumpers on the module.

4.1.1.4 24 V S upply of A nalog T rans duc ers

T he supply of analog transducers (18 ... 32 V DC), e.g. the AE M402, MX M401 or MX M402
must be supplied from the filtered 24 V power Supply.
I n case of many 4 - 20 transducers, they might require a separate FIM 405 filter module.
I n case of 24 V dc supplied transducers, with a low mV output, it might be necessary to use
a V M402 distribution module with galvanically isolation of the 24 V dc supply, due to
common mode E MC disturbance on the input signal.

4.2 S ens or Input/Output C able ins tallation

For recommendations regarding the general sensor allocation and connection to the
Outstations and to the Connection B oards within the Outstations, please consult the
"UMS/UCS 2100 T echnical System Description" for information regarding alarm/event
channel types, the function of average channels and cut out channels etc.
T he Connection B oards within the Outstation(s) are individually labelled. Please refer to the
Outstation L ay out drawing for the specific vessel.
T he channel definitions are made by means of the Customizing T ools Program - CT 2100,
which will provide a detailed I/O-list containing all information regarding the connection of
each sensor to the UMS/UCS 2100 System.
All sensor input/output cables are connected to the UMS/UCS 2100 Connection B oards -
CB ’ s through removable terminal plugs, enabling an easy cable installation and cable test.
T he I /O-list provided by the CT 2100 programme contains individual information for each
channel, including "Outstation Number", "Connection B oard (CB ) Number", "CB - Channel
Number", "Sensor T ype", "Sensor L ocation/Name" etc. T hus, the I /O-list provides all
information necessary for the complete sensor installation.
No signals from other systems may be transmitted in cables used for sensors, analogue
outputs and peripheral devices belonging to UMS/UCS 2100.
A common cable may be used for alarm signals and for control functions.
Cables carrying signals such as 230 V A C should always be laid separately.
Sensors must not be grounded.

4.2.1 C ombined Meas uring P oints

Sensors and transducers used for
averaging,
differential measurement,
exhaust gas temperature measuring systems, (thermonitor),
dependent control functions
must be connected to the same Gamma PL C.

4.2.2 C able types

4.2.3.3 S upervis ed B inary Inputs

B inary inputs with supervision can be made in two different ways.
E ither use an analog 4-20 mA input board with a 1.5 kOhm series resistor on the cable
connection, and a 1.5 kOhm resistor in parallel with the contact. T his solution is used, if there
are only a few sensors of this type. Please refer to the drawing of 4 - 20 mA transducers for
connection of this sensor.
T he other possibility is to use the I OM 402 Digital I nput/Output board, which is specially
made for this purpose, which can be used when many inputs of this type are required. It
requires a 8.2 kOhm resistor in parallel with the contact. Please refer to the drawing of B inary
I nputs for connection of this sensor.

4.3 G uidelines for S uppres s ion of E lec tromagnetic Interferenc e

During the design of the UMS/UCS 2100 System, big attention has been given to the
suppression and generation of electromagnetic noise.
When installing the UMS/UCS 2100 System, the following information regarding cable
classes and recommended distances between cables should be taken into consideration when
planning the physical location of cables and cable trays.
Please note the information in the cable and connection diagrams.
Power and signal cables must be laid separately.
Signal cables should not be laid close to high voltages or high-current devices.
T he correct clearance between signal cables and cables emitting interference must
be observed. Please refer to table 1.
Avoid excessive cable lengths.

4.3.1 C able C las s es and Dis tanc es between C ables

Cables can be grouped in five different interference classes, according to E MI generation and
E MI susceptibility. See table 1.
Normally all the different cable classes A to E should have separated routing, and the distance
between them should be as large as practicable. T he minimum distances are given in table 2.

4.3.2 S ignal C onnec tion and C abling

I nput/Output signals and the power supply are divided into disturbance classes and signal
groups to avoid E MI -problems.

4.3.2.1 Definitions of Dis turbanc e C las s es

Class 1: low disturbance consumer
this are small consumers like relays < 80 mA, which are E MI -suppressed
with quenching diodes or T ranszorb diodes
single lamps < 80 mA
passive sensors
modules of the UMS/UCS 2100 system

C lass 2: medium disturbance consumer

this are small consumers like relays > 80 mA, which are E MI -suppressed
with quenching diodes or T ranszorb diodes
normal ohmic consumer

C lass 3: high disturbance consumer

all other consumer

supplied from the net of group B 1(without no additional filtering)

G roup C : 24 V DC power supply with consumer s of class 2

Group C1: binary output signals of DR M401 & R E M401
external switches, which are used to switch over class 2 consumers
(in case of supply from group A1 these signals are classified into group
A1)
Group C2: Supply of consumers of class 3

G roup D: Supply from the automation batter y filter ed via a F I M 405

Group D1: supply of active analogue sensors, binary inputs or lamps
Group D2: binary input signals for DE M401, R E M401 & I OM402 supplied from
Class D1
Group D3: binary output signals of DR M401 & R E M401 supplied from class D1
(supply of inductive consumers from class D1 is not allowed)
Group D4: insensible analogue input signals at AE M402, MX M401, MX M402
(typically 4-20 mA, 0-10 V , PT 100)
(HI NT : inputs with an amplification in front of the ADC<=10)
Group D5: sensible analogue input signals at A E M402, MX M401, MX M402
(typically thermocouple elements)
(HI NT : inputs with an amplification in front of the ADC>10)
Group D6: analogue output signals from the AAM401
Group D7: serial R S485 interfaces/connections between Gamma SI Os, E ADs and
Panels
- Signals T +/T - : twisted pair, screened
- Signals R +/R - : twisted pair, screened
- Signal 0V : screened
T he signals S+/S-, R +/R - and B can be screened separately, but all
signals must comprise in one cable.

I nstallation Guidelines

4.3.3 S ignal C ombination in One C able

T he following rules must be observed in case of combining cables :
aspects of safety or classification rules in combining signals of group A with any
other group
signals of group A, B and C can be combined in one cable without any additional
measures
signals of group D can be combined in screened, twisted pair cables. R elated
signals (like +/- signals of an analogue sensors) must be used in twisted pairs and
comprised in one cable. Separate screens inside one cable must be used for:
- signals of group D7 (if there are more than one related signal groups in
one cable, the screening of all signal groups with one screen is sufficient)
- signals of group D5 (if there are more than one related signal groups in
one cable, the screening of all signal groups with one screen is sufficient)
signals of group D can be combined with signals of group B and C1 in one cable.
I n this case the signals of group D must be screened against group B and C1.
T hese rules are containing the demand, that all inductive consumers, which
are supplied via a combined cable also includes signals of group D
or switched via a module e.g. DR M401 & R E M401
must be E MI -suppressed.

4.3.4 C ombination of C ables in C able trunks

Similar to the rules of chapter 4.3.3 these are also to observed for combining cables in Cable
trunks within cabinets. E xceptions are allowed for very short distances.
