PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW

O God, source of all goodness: We give you thanks for the gift of reason
and the opportunity for education. Bless our schools, that they may be
places of learning and safety where teachers challenge minds and nurture
the hearts of students. Grant that teachers and students may work together
in mutual respect and find joy in the challenges of academic life; through
Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen
15
Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little
child will never enter it." 16And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands
on them, and blessed them.

God of Wisdom, we give you thanks for schools and classrooms and for all
teachers and students. We thank you for this new beginning of a school
year, as fresh as a newly sharpened pencil and a blank page.

These students and teachers stand here ready to receive your blessing as
they commit themselves to teaching and learning in the school year ahead.
We ask your blessing on each of them. May they be reminded of the love
and care of this congregation that goes to school with them.

Bless them with:

eagerness to learn, that their world may grow large;
respect for one another, that they may form healthy relationships;
love for nature, that they may become caretakers of your creation;

faith in Jesus as their best teacher and closest friend.
Watch over them and keep them safe
as they travel to and from school.
As they learn and teach, help them also to discover
the different gifts that you have given each one of them
to be used in your work in the world.

SECOND READING: Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16

Abraham and Sarah exemplify the vision of faith that people of God enact
in every age. Their hope and trust in God’s promise allowed them to face
an unknown future and to receive the promise of God.
1
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not
seen. 2Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. 3By faith we
understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what
is seen was made from things that are not visible.
8
By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that
he was to receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he
was going. 9By faith he stayed for a time in the land he had been promised,
as in a foreign land, living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs GOSPEL: Luke 12:32-40

OFFERTORY HYMN: Create in Me A Clean Heart (ELW 188) PREFACE

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all
places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through
our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and
by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And
so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of
heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

OFFERING PRAYER

Let us pray. God of all creation, all you have made is good, and your love
endures forever. You bring forth bread from the earth and fruit from the
vine. Nourish us with the Body and Blood of Christ through these gifts, so
that we will love the world as you have loved us in Jesus Christ, our Savior
and Lord. Amen. EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

It is right to give our thanks and praise.
In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave
thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is
my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
LAMB OF GOD
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to
drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and
for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Remembering, therefore, his life, death, resurrection, and ascension, we

await his coming in glory.

Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of all
who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord;
to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and
forever. Amen.

LORD'S PRAYER

Risen Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray:

Father Kolbe was a Franciscan priest arrested by the Nazis and confined in
Auschwitz. Kolbe gave generously of his meager resources, and finally
volunteered to be starved to death in place of another man. A Danish
Lutheran pastor and playwright, Munk strongly denounced the Nazis who
occupied Denmark in the Second World War. His sermons and articles
helped to show the anti-Christian nature of the movement.
