Dear Student

GPA calculation

This letter outlines instructions on how to calculate your NZ GPA as well as how we calculate your
GPA for Honours at AUT.

In New Zealand, we have a 9-point GPA scale. Other countries like USA have a 4-point GPA scale. The
GPA can be calculated at any time during your studies but is usually done at completion of studies.

Step 5 instructions below is the calculation method used for the Honours award only.

Step 1
Login to Arion, then go to Academic Details > Assessment Details. Select the Year to bring up all
your results from AK3751 Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) to date

Step 2
Once you have a list of your papers and their grades (print these pages or write them on a piece of
paper) refer to table 1.1. If you have a W, S, CR, EX or RE grade, you do not count it
Table 1.1

Step 3 Converted
Grade Grade
With the list of your grades, write the corresponding converted grade
A+ 9
number next to them. For example, if you received a B-, write next to this A 8
“4”. Your C+ would be a 3, and so on. You must include the fail grades as 0 A- 7
B+ 6
Step 4 B 5
Once you have all your numbers lined-up, calculate the average. This is done B- 4
C+ 3
by adding all your converted grade numbers together and reaching a total.
C 2
Then divide the total by the number of papers. This includes the papers you C- 1
failed D 0
DNC
For exame:
example: 5 + 8 + 2 + 0 + 9 +7 = 31 = 5.2
Step 5 6 6

Using the average you got from the above step, refer to table 1.2 to determine your GPA and grade
range.
Table 1.2

GPA GRADE RANGE

>8.5 A+
7.5- 8.49 A
6.5- 7.49 A-
5.5- 6.49 B+
4.5- 5.49 B
3.5- 4.49 B-
2.5- 3.49 C+
1.5- 2.49 C
0.5- 1.49 C-
<0.5 D

Step 5
With the final calculation of Year 2 GPA, multiply it by 16.66%, Year 3 multiply it by 33.33% and
finally Year 4 multiply it by 50%. Add the sum of all the final results of GPA for Year 2,3 and 4.

For example: 5 + 8 + 2 + 0 + 9 +7 = 31 = 5.2 x 16.66 = 0.87 (Year 2/3/4 GPA)

6 6 100

Year 2 GPA (x 16.66%) + Year 3 GPA (x 33.33%) + Year 4 GPA (x 50%) = GPA for Honours award

All Year 1 papers will not be used in this GPA calculation

General Elective papers will not be used in this GPA calculation

If you take another Year 4 paper as your general elective, we will use your lowest scoring grade as
your general elective. The remaining best scoring grades of your Year 4 elective papers will be
counted towards your GPA.

If you are taking a Year 1 paper e.g. 705003 in your second year enrolment, this does not make it a
Year 2 paper because it does not belong to Year 2 of study in the programme. However, if you are
given permission to take a different paper as a replacement for one of the paper due to special
circumstances, you may consider that replacement as the same Year of study for the paper it
replaces.

To be eligible for the Honours award, you must gain the following GPA:

 Second Class Second Division = 4.5 to 5.49

 Second Class First Division = 5.5 to 6.49

 First Class = 6.5 and above

Many thanks
