1 DEVICE PURPOSE
Intrinsically safe power supply ZIB-x is a stationary device used to power intrinsically safe
circuits. The power supply unit (PSU) is manufactured in versions, varying input and output
parameters. ZIB-x is available in two variants: without a battery back-up (ZIB-1) and with a battery
back-up (ZIB-2x). ZIB-x is powered from non-intrinsically safe mains voltages 24VAC, 42VAC, 230VAC
or 250VDC. Output voltage of the PSU is connected in parallel to connectors DC1 and DC2 (or DC1
and OPTO in ZIB-2F version). In case of mains voltage loss, the ZIB-2x variant of the device enters
battery-powered mode.
Each variant of the power supply unit has two communication interfaces: ZIB-1 and ZIB-2x
has RS-485 and RS-232, ZIB-2F has RS485 and optical 100base-FX standard. For signalling and
monitoring the state of device there are LEDs (3 for ZIB-1 and 4 for ZIB-2x) and two-state outputs.
Device status and parameters are available through communication interfaces described above.

IO ZIB-x
Abide requirements concerning intended use, mounting , power supply parameters and handling
included in the this manual.
The doubled number of terminals and the additional cable gland allows to use junction box to
distribute the mains voltage.
The outputs of PSU are protected by current-voltage barrier. The barrier limits output energy which
could result the ignition of explosive atmospheres.
The nominal voltage and the maximum output current (nominal) are specified as parameters of
each of PSU versions. Output voltage of the PSU is connected in parallel to pins 1 and 2 of connectors
DC1 and DC2 (or DC1 and OPTO in ZIB-2F).
LEDs and two-state outputs are used to indicate the operating status of the PSU. In addition,
the power supply has two communication interfaces: RS-485 and RS-232 (or RS485 and optical
100base-FX standard for ZIB-2F version). The interfaces allow the access of additional parameters of
PSU, such as: battery voltage level, load (in %), battery charge level (only ZIB-2x) and remaining
battery-backup time (only ZIB-2x).
In case of mains voltage loss, the ZIB-2x variant of PSU automatically switch to battery-
powered mode. When mains supply is recovered, the battery starts charging by internal charger.
The ZIB-2x variation of the PSU can be turned on without mains voltage (from battery), as
well as turned off when battery-powered. Details of these features are described in point 6
(‘Operation and use’).

7.1.2 Cables
In areas endangered with explosion, only approved cables should be used with maximum
wire size of 4mm2. The external diameter of the cables must be within the range of 14-18mm.
Terminal blocks for both variations of the power supply unit are presented in Fig. 4 and Fig. 5. Only
one wire may be placed in a single terminal. If using a stranded cable, use the end sleeve for each
wire. Maximum approved current for terminal block is 30 Amps. Use table from p.2 “Power supply
AC” to calculate maximum number of PSUs, that can be connected together in one chain.
CAUTION!!! Any connections to the mains must be carried out after disconnecting
supply voltage.
CAUTION!!! The user may only use the lower terminals. The upper terminals are used
for internal connections of the unit (Fig. 4 and 5).
10
IO ZIB-x
CAUTION!!! If only one cable gland is used, the other must be blanked with a plug
(provided).
CAUTION!!! Power supply Unit is equipped with protective earth terminal (PE) (see
figures 4 and 5). It is used for connecting all metal parts of ZIB-x to the ground. The PE
cable should be connected before making any other connections. During use of PSU
the PE cable connection should be checked periodically.
Before connecting the wire, remove the external insulation from the cable along the length
of approx. 60mm. After that remove isolation of each wire (over the length of minimum 10mm;
when stranded cable is used apply the end sleeves). Insert the prepared cable into the junction box
through the cable gland. The insulation of the cable should reach inside, at least several mm beyond
the outline of the cable gland. Next the cable should be glanded.
Terminal lock Wire terminal Upper-side terminals Terminal lock Wire terminal
A flat screwdriver is required to put the wires into terminals. Insert the screwdriver into a
rectangular hole of the lock, located directly by the terminal (round aperture). Press strongly – this
will open the terminal, and allow putting the wire in. After inserting the wire in place, pull out the
screwdriver – the terminal will close and lock the wire within the terminal.

CAUTION !!! If ZIB-2x PSU (not connected to mains power) is to be stored for a longer
period of time (more than 3 months). Proper maintenance of battery must be taken.
Before storage the batteries should be fully charged (5 flashes of the BAT LED
indicator). Every time before storage make sure that PSU is turned off (in accordance
with section 7.2.). Once a month, turn on the power supply and check the battery
status. If the battery level drops to 40-60% (5 flashes of the BAT LED indicator) the
PSU should be connected to mains to recharge the battery. Do not allow the
excessive discharge of the battery, as this could make impossible for PSU to operate
with backup battery.
CAUTION !!! In case when the ZIB-2x PSU was fully discharged (when PSU turn
OFF automatically) it is advised to recharge battery within 7 days after
discharge.
