1 DEVICE PURPOSE
Intrinsically safe power supply ZIB-x is a stationary device used to power intrinsically safe
circuits. The power supply unit (PSU) is manufactured in versions, varying input and output
parameters. ZIB-x is available in two variants: without a battery back-up (ZIB-1) and with a battery
back-up (ZIB-2x). ZIB-x is powered from non-intrinsically safe mains voltages 24VAC, 42VAC, 230VAC
or 250VDC. Output voltage of the PSU is connected in parallel to connectors DC1 and DC2 (or DC1
and OPTO in ZIB-2F version). In case of mains voltage loss, the ZIB-2x variant of the device enters
battery-powered mode.
Each variant of the power supply unit has two communication interfaces: ZIB-1 and ZIB-2x
has RS-485 and RS-232, ZIB-2F has RS485 and optical 100base-FX standard. For signalling and
monitoring the state of device there are LEDs (3 for ZIB-1 and 4 for ZIB-2x) and two-state outputs.
Device status and parameters are available through communication interfaces described above.

5 DESIGN AND OPERATION

After unscrewing and removing the housing cover of the PSU, the junction box with terminal
block can be accessed. Terminal block is used to connect 250VDC, 230VAC, 42VAC or 24VAC cables
with maximum wire size of 4mm2 .

• in variant ZIB-1, terminal block consist of 6 terminals: 2x L1, 2x L2, 2x PE

• in variant ZIB-2x, terminal block consist of 7 terminals: 2x L1, 2x L2, 3x PE

The doubled number of terminals and the additional cable gland allows to use junction box to
distribute the mains voltage.

The outputs of PSU are protected by current-voltage barrier. The barrier limits output energy which
could result the ignition of explosive atmospheres.

The nominal voltage and the maximum output current (nominal) are specified as parameters of
each of PSU versions. Output voltage of the PSU is connected in parallel to pins 1 and 2 of connectors
DC1 and DC2 (or DC1 and OPTO in ZIB-2F).

The PSU has two types of thermal protection:

• non-resettable - protects the PSU from damage and from exceeding the permissible
temperature of the device.
• resettable - protects the electronic circuits from overheating – e.g. in the event of shorted
output.

LEDs and two-state outputs are used to indicate the operating status of the PSU. In addition,
the power supply has two communication interfaces: RS-485 and RS-232 (or RS485 and optical
100base-FX standard for ZIB-2F version). The interfaces allow the access of additional parameters of
PSU, such as: battery voltage level, load (in %), battery charge level (only ZIB-2x) and remaining
battery-backup time (only ZIB-2x).

In case of mains voltage loss, the ZIB-2x variant of PSU automatically switch to battery-
powered mode. When mains supply is recovered, the battery starts charging by internal charger.

The ZIB-2x variation of the PSU can be turned on without mains voltage (from battery), as
well as turned off when battery-powered. Details of these features are described in point 6
(‘Operation and use’).

9
IO ZIB-x

The installation of ZIB-2 powered only by battery (temporary operation until battery discharge):
1. Mount the power supply unit in the work area
2. Unscrew the housing cover
3. Switch on the PSU by putting the switch into ‘ON’ position
4. Screw on the housing cover
5. Connect load to the DC1 and DC2 output connectors (or DC1, OPTO in ZIB-2F version)

7.1.1 Operating position

The operating position is not specified, but it is recommended to mount to device vertically with
the connectors directed down. The PSU provided with the bracket (figures 2 and 3), hooks and
screws. Special consideration should be taken to minimize the impact of the factors, such as:
• salty water
• aggressive substances
• strong vibrations and excessive temperatures
• direct contact with of dust or solid objects

Fig. 2 ZIB-1 unit with bracket. Back view. Fig. 3 ZIB-2 unit with bracket. Front view.

7.1.2 Cables
In areas endangered with explosion, only approved cables should be used with maximum
wire size of 4mm2. The external diameter of the cables must be within the range of 14-18mm.
Terminal blocks for both variations of the power supply unit are presented in Fig. 4 and Fig. 5. Only
one wire may be placed in a single terminal. If using a stranded cable, use the end sleeve for each
wire. Maximum approved current for terminal block is 30 Amps. Use table from p.2 “Power supply
AC” to calculate maximum number of PSUs, that can be connected together in one chain.

7.1.3 Connecting cables in the junction box

CAUTION!!! Any connections to the mains must be carried out after disconnecting
supply voltage.

CAUTION!!! The user may only use the lower terminals. The upper terminals are used
for internal connections of the unit (Fig. 4 and 5).

10
IO ZIB-x

CAUTION!!! If only one cable gland is used, the other must be blanked with a plug
(provided).

CAUTION!!! Power supply Unit is equipped with protective earth terminal (PE) (see
figures 4 and 5). It is used for connecting all metal parts of ZIB-x to the ground. The PE
cable should be connected before making any other connections. During use of PSU
the PE cable connection should be checked periodically.

Before connecting the wire, remove the external insulation from the cable along the length
of approx. 60mm. After that remove isolation of each wire (over the length of minimum 10mm;
when stranded cable is used apply the end sleeves). Insert the prepared cable into the junction box
through the cable gland. The insulation of the cable should reach inside, at least several mm beyond
the outline of the cable gland. Next the cable should be glanded.

Terminal lock Wire terminal Upper-side terminals Terminal lock Wire terminal

Fig. 4 ZIB-1 terminal block. Fig. 5 ZIB-2x terminal block.

Lower-side terminals

A flat screwdriver is required to put the wires into terminals. Insert the screwdriver into a
rectangular hole of the lock, located directly by the terminal (round aperture). Press strongly – this
will open the terminal, and allow putting the wire in. After inserting the wire in place, pull out the
screwdriver – the terminal will close and lock the wire within the terminal.

7.1.4 Output connectors (ZIB-1 and ZIB-2 version)

7.2 Turning on and turning off the power supply unit

ZIB-1
The output voltage turns on, when the mains voltage (AC) is applied to the power supply unit,
similarly when the mains voltage is disconnected, the output voltage turns off.

ZIB-2x
Turning on the PSU:
1. Automatically, when mains voltage is detected.
2. If there is no mains voltage, it is possible to power the unit from battery. To turn-on the power
supply unit:
• Unscrew the top cover of the housing
• Put the switch into ‘ON’ position. The switch should automatically return to the neutral
position (see Figure 10).
• After turning on the PSU (indicated by LEDs), mount the top cover and tighten all the screws.

Turning off the PSU:

1. If there is no mains voltage, the power supply unit will deactivate when the battery discharge
fully. The supply outputs will be deactivated first. At that point, the power supply unit has an
opportunity to signal its status – until battery voltage will reach level when it is too small for the
device to operate correctly – then the PSU will deactivate automatically.
2. If it is required, the power supply unit (battery-powered) may be turned off (only when mains
voltage is disconnected):
• Unscrew the top cover of the housing
• Put the switch into ‘OFF’ position. The switch should automatically return to the neutral
position (see Figure 14).
• After deactivation of the power supply unit (when all LEDs turn off), mount the top cover and
tighten all the screws.

7.4 Two-state outputs

The two-state outputs are designed as additional indication of PSU’s operation state. They
are available in STATUS RS485 connector. The type of outputs are ‘open collector’. Figure 15 presents
a schematic diagram of the recommended connection method of the two-state outputs: 230V OK,
12V OK, I80%, LOW BAT of STATUS RS485 connector (example for output at pin 3).

Fig. 15 Block diagram of a two-state output

Electrical parameters of two-state outputs 230V OK, 12V OK, I80%, LOW BAT:
Ui = 5V, Ii = 130mA. The description of all two-state outputs, for both versions of the PSU is presented
in table 3 and 4.

Table 3. Description of ZIB-1 binary signals

Binary signal Description of functions

230 V OK low level of output indicates the presence of mains voltage 230 VAC / 42 VAC

12V OK low level of output indicates the presence of output voltage

low level of output indicates high load of the PSU:

I80%
100% ≥Io ≥ 80%

LOW_BAT not used in this version of the power supply unit

Table 4. Description of ZIB-2x binary signals

Binary signal Description of functions

230V OK low level of output indicates the presence of mains voltage 230 VAC / 42 VAC

12V OK low level of output indicates the presence of output voltage

low level of output indicates high load of the PSU:

I80%
100% ≥Io ≥ 80%

LOW BAT low level indicates battery-powered operation

low level with mains voltage present, indicates charging of the battery

high state without mains voltage, indicates low charge state of battery (≤20%)

7.5 OptoMOS outputs

In both connectors of DC1 and DC2 supply outputs, there is additional output (optomos
output) - galvanically isolated from the rest of the circuit. Closing the contacts of the output indicates
the presence of mains voltage. A schematic diagram of this output, method of connection and
parameters of a cooperating device are presented in Fig. 12.

Fig. 16 Block diagram of a normally open output.

CAUTION!!! DC2 output is not present in ZIB-2F. There is only one OptoMOS
output in this version - in DC1 connector.

7.6 Selected operation states of ZIB-x PSU.

Device failure state
Device failure is indicated by turning on red ‘LOAD’ LED and turning off the green ‘Vout’ LED. The
cause for the above may be:
• PSU overload
• Short-circuiting of one of the outputs of the power supply unit (DC1 or/and DC2 or/and
OPTO)

If device failure occurs:

• Disconnect load from DC1, DC2, OPTO connectors
• Check output cables of the PSU for short circuit
• Check if the sum of load currents exceeds the nominal current of the PSU. If this is the case,
the load must be reduced accordingly so that the nominal current is not exceeded.
After approx. 10-30 min (may be longer, depending on the ambient temperature), voltage on the
PSU’s outputs will turn-on automatically. This is indicated LED ‘Vout’. If there is no voltage on the
output after this period of time, the power supply unit may be damaged.

Discharge of battery (only ZIB-2x)

If the power supply unit is battery-powered and the red ‘LOAD’ LED turn on and the green
‘Vout’ LED turns off, this may indicate:
a) Event of failure (see above) or
b) Discharge of battery

When the battery is discharged, DC1, DC2 outputs are switched off (the ‘Vout’ LED turns off).
The two-state outputs and transmission interface are still active (until complete discharge of
battery). The PSU’s outputs will switch on shortly after mains voltage recovery. The battery will also
start charging.

Damage
In other cases, if there was no device failure state (e.g. overload) or discharge of battery (only
for ZIB-2x), turning on red LED may signal a permanent damage of PSU. In such circumstances, the
device should be sent for repair. Repair must be carried out by the manufacturer’s service point or
unit authorized by the manufacturer.

8 MAINTENANCE AND PERIODICAL INSPECTIONS

ZIB-1 AND ZIB-2x
ZIB-x PSU is an automatic device. Periodical inspections are necessary – at least once every
12 months. PSU’s checking should include following points:
- condition of the housing (visible damage, missing screws, missing name plate, etc.)
- condition of cable glands and cables
- condition of output connectors of the power supply unit
- condition of terminal block (WAGO type) in the junction box
- presence of the cable gland’s plug (if only one cable gland is used)
- presence of protective covers of output connectors (also connectors currently in use)

If cables or optical fibres are damaged or worn, they must be replaced. If the PSU is
damaged, it should be unmounted and send for repair. Repair may be carried only by manufacturer
or service location pointed by manufacturer.

Only for ZIB-2x

If the battery lose their capacity (significant reduction in their operating time), it is recommended to
replace the battery, however, no less frequently than every 5 years. This must be carried out by the
manufacturer’s service point or unit authorized by the manufacturer.

23
IO ZIB-x

CAUTION !!! If ZIB-2x PSU (not connected to mains power) is to be stored for a longer
period of time (more than 3 months). Proper maintenance of battery must be taken.
Before storage the batteries should be fully charged (5 flashes of the BAT LED
indicator). Every time before storage make sure that PSU is turned off (in accordance
with section 7.2.). Once a month, turn on the power supply and check the battery
status. If the battery level drops to 40-60% (5 flashes of the BAT LED indicator) the
PSU should be connected to mains to recharge the battery. Do not allow the
excessive discharge of the battery, as this could make impossible for PSU to operate
with backup battery.

CAUTION !!! In case when the ZIB-2x PSU was fully discharged (when PSU turn
OFF automatically) it is advised to recharge battery within 7 days after
discharge.
