Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of: pre-colonial

Philippine literature as a means of connecting to the past; various reading styles;


ways of determining word meaning; the sounds of English and the prosodic features
of speech; and correct subject-verb agreement.
Performance Standard: The learner transfers learning by: showing appreciation for
the literature of the past; comprehending texts using appropriate reading styles;
participating in conversations using appropriate context-dependent expressions; and
observing correct subject-verb agreement.
I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the class, the students must be able to:
a. Identify and explain the meanings of common idioms;
b. Present a role play expressing the meaning of idioms through a
dialog; and
c. Use appropriate idiomatic expressions in communicative situations.

B. Motivation (L1 Idiom!)
Task 1:
Directions: Every language and culture has its own set of idioms, and the Filipinos
have their own as well. Look at the example Filipino idiom below and try to give
its literal English translation.
Filipino Idiom Literal English Translation
Buto�t balat
Possible answer: malnourished
(Skin and bones is also an American idiom for someone who is very skinny or
malnourished.)
Task 2:
Directions: Study the following lines below. Then, be ready to answer the
questions.

C. Presentation/Discussion
-Students will be given an activity wherein they will give the meaning of the
popular Filipino idioms.
- Let the students replace each italicized idiom in the given text with its
meaning. They will choose their answers from the given choices.
- The teacher will discuss about idioms and will give some examples of it.
D. Application
Students will be grouped into 4 and out of the given examples of idiomatic
expressions, make a short conversation for the following scenario:

Group 1: Telephone scenario


Group 2: Meeting old friend
Group 3: Family gathering
Group 4: Simple conversation with a teacher

A rubric will be given for them to be guided on how they will be rated.

� Why do other people use idiomatic expressions when they write?
IV. EVALUATION (Individual Activity)
Teacher-made quiz will be given on idiomatic expressions (see formative
notebook).
V. ASSIGNMENT
Look for at least 5 idiomatic expressions and give its meaning. Write your answers
in your English notebook.
