Calibration

1-3 Calibration

To use images on an HD Video Recorder other than DICOM format images for measurements, you must
first enter the examination information (examination date, patient data, image data, etc.) for those
images. This is known as calibration. Performing measurements after calibration is referred to as a
playback measurement.

Assign the following functions prior to calibration.

 Touch panel

– Assign [EXT] to a direct switch on the touch panel.

– Assign [Video Calib] to the measurement control menu on the touch panel.

Observe the following safety measures when using this function.

(1) Image record and playback
Aspect ratio differences between images may result in distortion during playback. As a result, measured values
may differ slightly from the true values.
• A DVD recorded using ALOKA ARIETTA 850 must be played back using ALOKA ARIETTA 850 to perform playback
measurements.
• For information on recording, playback and ending procedures, refer to the separate “Basic Operations” volume.
• To record Doppler blood flow waveforms, you must first correct the angles of the images and set their baselines.
(2) Measurement requirements
Be sure to press the [New Patient] key and enter patient information for the patient for whom playback
measurement is to be performed before playing back images or performing calibration operations. The date on
which the playback measurement is performed is registered as the examination date.
A calibration is necessary to change display mode, range and image format.
(3) Measurements that cannot be used for playback measurements
Playback measurements cannot be performed for the following measurements and functions that require the
loading of data from image memory. Histogram measurements, flow profile measurements, PISA measurements,
M TDI measurements, IMT auto measurements, Doppler auto trace function for Doppler waveform in Doppler
measurements
(4) Playback measurements where some operations are subject to change
Doppler auto trace function for Doppler waveform in Doppler measurements cannot be performed.
Instead, the Manual Trace method is used.
(5) No vertical and horizontal scale is provided for 3D playback images.
For that reason, they do not provide reliable calibration information. 3D playback images should not be used for
measurements.

2-2-6 Volume Measurement: Volume1/ Volume2

Use this function to measure the volume of the target area.

Select a measurement method (Caliper, Ellipse, Trace) to determine the volume.

The following calculation methods are used for volume measurements.

 Spheroidal
Three diameters (long axis, short axis and the maximum cross-sectional diameter in the direction
perpendicular to the long axis (= intermediate axis diameter)) are measured from the image of two
orthogonally intersecting cross-sectional planes, and the volume of the rotating spheroid is
calculated.

 Prolate
Like measuring the area of an ellipse, calculate the volume using the long and short axes of the
ellipse and measure the hypothetical circle on the orthogonal cross-sectional plane intersecting the
short axis.

 Method of calculating volume from the traced area and long axis:

– Area-Length

Trace the long axis cross-section and calculate volume from this area and the long diameter.

– BP Simpson

The volume is computed using the basic principles of the Disk method (measurement with two cross
sections).

– SP Simpson

The volume is computed using the basic principles of the Disk method (measurement with one cross
section).

There are four types of measurement method. The following are the combinations of calculation
methods.

2-4-15 Real Time Doppler Auto Trace

This function automatically traces the Doppler waveform in real-time and displays the Doppler
information for the most recent single heartbeat. You can also perform tracing immediately after the
image is frozen without tracing in real time. The calculated Doppler information can be transferred to
an application measurement.

This is suitable for use with the pulsatile waveform of peripheral arteries, such as the carotid artery.

1) 1) Most recent single heartbeat

2) 2) Trace Line
3) 1 Heartbeat detection line cursor
3) 4) Measurement Results Display

When PI and RI are calculated using Real Time Doppler Auto Trace measurement, the minimum blood
flow velocity point during a single heartbeat is the EDV. In waveforms whose blood flow polarity
changes during the interval between the systole and the diastole, like the arteries in the lower
extremities, the peak of the waveform that has undergone a polarity change is detected as EDV.

2-5-1 Blood Flow Volume Measurement: Flow Profile

Use this function to measure the blood flow volume of the tubular peripheral vascular system (including
the carotid artery).

These measurements can be applied to the peripheral vascular system throughout the body. It is not
applicable to non-circular vessels such as veins or for measuring blood flow in the heart cavities.

The one-dimensional flow rate profile detected by the Color Doppler method is expanded to a
two-dimensional profile. The individual flow values from the two-dimensional profile are multiplied by
the areas of the respective micro-area elements to obtain the individual flow volumes, which are totaled
in order to quantify the instantaneous blood flow. The blood flow volume which flows for any given time
in an region of interest can be calculated with the integration processes of instantaneous blood flow in
a longitudinal direction.

The target of this measurement is successive multiple B/Color Flow images.

The optional SOP-ARIETTA850-7 is required for this measurement.

1 Display a good quality continuous long-axis tomographic image passing through the center of
a blood vessel with the Color Doppler method.
