Reading a straightforward account of a moment in history will expand your knowledge of the cold, hard facts but often taking it a cultural interpretation of it may make you more open and receptive to receiving the information, and it may allow you to better understand the depth and emotions that are part of it. A song, film or novel can rouse emotions in those who encounter it, inspiring them to rally for change. Art influences society by changing opinions, instilling values and translating experiences across space and time. Painting, sculpture, music, literature and the other arts are often considered to be the repository of a society’s collective memory. Art preserves what fact-based historical records cannot: how it felt to exist in a particular place at a particular time. 3.
