Operations of Functions
Semi – Detailed Lesson Plan
General Mathematics
July 22, 2019
I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a) Demonstate how to perform operations of functions;
b) Solve problems on operations of functions; and
c) represent real-life situations using operations of functions.
III. Procedure
A. Preliminary Activities
Prayer
“Lord, we are gathered once again in your presence to start a new day. Bless our
teachers and fellow students as we go on with our studies. Give us strength and
knowledge o’Lord that we may learn well. Guide us throughout the day. This we
ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

B. Lesson Proper
Pre-developmental Activity
1. Review
2. Drill
3. Motivation
Developmental Activity
1. Presentation (Lecture/Discussion)
The Rules on performing operations of functions, f and g, are the
following:
a) The sum, f + g, is the function defined by:
𝑦 = (𝑓 + 𝑔)𝑥 = 𝑓(𝑥) + 𝑔(𝑥)
b) The difference, f – g, is the function defined by:
𝑦 = (𝑓 − 𝑔)𝑥 = 𝑓(𝑥) − 𝑔(𝑥)
c) The product, 𝑓 ∙ 𝑔, is the function defined by:
𝑦 = (𝑓 ∙ 𝑔)𝑥 = 𝑓(𝑥) ∙ 𝑔(𝑥)
𝑓
d) The quotient, 𝑔, is the function defined by:
𝑓 𝑓(𝑥)
𝑦 = (𝑔) 𝑥 = 𝑔(𝑥), where g(x)≠0
2. Unlocking of Difficulties
If f and g are functions defined by 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 − 2 and g(x)=x-2, find the
following in simplified form:
1. (𝑓 + 𝑔)𝑥 = 𝑓(𝑥) + 𝑔(𝑥)
2. (𝑓 − 𝑔)𝑥 = 𝑓(𝑥) − 𝑔(𝑥)
3. (𝑓 ∙ 𝑔)𝑥 = 𝑓(𝑥) ∙ 𝑔(𝑥)
𝑓 𝑓(𝑥)
4. ( ) 𝑥 =
𝑔 𝑔(𝑥)
Post-developmental Activity
1. Practice and Drill
a) Given the functions 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 2 , 𝑔(𝑥) = 2𝑥 + 3 and ℎ(𝑥) = 3√𝑥, find:
𝑓(𝑥) + 𝑔(𝑥)
𝑓(𝑥)
𝑔(𝑥)
𝑓(𝑥) ∙ 𝑔(𝑥)
𝑓(𝑥) − 𝑔(𝑥)
2. Generalization
Let f and g be functions. (a) Their sum, denoted by f + g, is the function
denoted by (f + g)(x) = f(x) + g(x). (b) Their difference, denoted by f −g, is the
function denoted by (f −g)(x) = f(x)− g(x). (c) Their product, denoted by f ·g, is the
function denoted by (f ·g)(x) = f(x)·g(x). (d) Their quotient, denoted by f/g, is the
function denoted by (f/g)(x) = f(x)/g(x), excluding the values of x where g(x) = 0.
IV. Evaluation
A. Given the functions 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 + 1, 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 , 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ℎ(𝑥) = 𝑥 + 1, 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑑:
𝑓(𝑥)
1. 𝑔(𝑥)
2. 𝑓(2) + 𝑔(3)
3. 𝑦(1) − ℎ(2)
1
4. 𝑓 ( )
4
5. [𝑔(3)]2
B. Given 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 + 5, 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 and C. Given 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 + 1, 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 +
ℎ(𝑥) = √𝑥, find: 1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ℎ(𝑥) = 𝑥 − 1, 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑑:
a. 𝑓(𝑔(𝑥)) a. 𝑓(𝑔(1))
b. 𝑔(𝑓(𝑥)) b. 𝑔(𝑓(3))
c. 𝑔(ℎ(𝑥)) c. 𝑓(ℎ(2))
d. 𝑓(ℎ(𝑥))
e. ℎ(𝑓(𝑥))
V. Assignment
