Block diagram of solar charged inverter connected to Smart Device

A solar charged smart inverter which takes input from Photo Voltaic panel.
The battery is charged through PV panel and charge controller. A battery
output dc voltage is converted into ac voltage with the help of an inverter.
A solar charged inverter uses Arduino Uno-WiFi controller. The board is
based on the ATmega328P with an ESP8266 WiFi Module integrated. The
ESP8266 WiFi Module is a self contained SoC with integrated TCP/IP
protocol stack that can give access to your WiFi network. The arduino Uno is
programmed with help of Arduino MATLAB simulink package.

Fig 1.Functional Block diagram of switching unit

The controller is programmed to generate firing pulses to the inverter
IGBTs and to assist the Wi-Fi module ESP8266 to connect to the access point
by using the SSID and password of the access point. The network assigns an
IP address to the Wi-Fi module which is displayed on the LCD. This IP
address along with a pre-assigned port number is keyed in into the mobile
application which is essential in establishing a TCP connection with this
module on this port number. Once the connection is established, the module
keeps listening for packets on this port number. Once the packet is received it
is given to the controller to perform the requested action. The mobile
application is developed by using MIT Inventor 2.
The microcontroller to transmit and receive messages using the
Transmit and Receive pins of the controller. When a user sends a message to
the Wi-Fi module ESP8266, it sends the same to the controller which is
programmed to accept the message and compare it with a pre-defined string.
There are several commands used in controlling the loads like ON1 to turn on
the Relay1, OFF1 to turn off the Relay1 and so on. When a match is
identified, the respective relay gets either enabled or disabled. Two wires are
pulled out from the bridge rectifier of the inverter. One of the wires is the
stepped up voltage of 230 volts and the other is a common ground. The
stepped up voltage is given to the common terminal of each relay. Further, a
connection is established from the NO (Normal Open) terminal of the relay to
the load and another end of the load is connected to common ground. When
the relay is enabled by the controller, the circuit gets completed and the load
gets switched ON.
The controller is programmed by using MATLAB Arduino Simulink
package such that it can control household appliances wirelessly as well as
monitor the battery health. The run time of the loads is also calculated and is
sent to the user in real time which makes the inverter smarter by letting the
user know for how long he can run the loads on the battery voltage alone
before the battery dies.

(c) Final outcome/deliverable of the project

A solar smart inverter allows user to control the selective loads through GUI
and easy monitoring of power consumption of house hold appliances.

Brief description of the idea highlighting innovative element:

The existing inverters inform the user about the voltage, current, power
and other parameters using the display monitor on them. In, this project we
propose an inverter with a wireless system with which a user can control
household appliances wirelessly as well as monitor the battery health. This
battery is charged using a solar panel, making it an eco-friendly power
generator and reducing carbon footprint to a great extent. The run time of the
loads is also calculated and is sent to the user in real time which makes the
inverter smarter by letting the user know for how long he can run the loads on
the battery voltage alone before the battery dies. Hence, this is a bidirectional
system where commands are sent from the controller to the user and vice
versa.
A smart inverter can monitor State of charge of a battery,
inverter voltage, inverter current and energy consumption for a particular
period. The user can control the loads i.e. during power failures user can
operate the critical loads through Graphical User Interface (GUI). The user
can get notifications regarding maintenance i.e., battery water level indication,
over load of inverter etc.
In this project uses the Arduino uno with ESP 8266 Wi-Fi module to
meet the objective of the work, to which we can connect up to 12 loads given
it has 12ADC pins. It is interfaced with a Wi-Fi module ESP8266. ESP8266 is
a cheap Wi-Fi module which is easily available and can be easily
programmed to send and receive data. The ESP8266 can be programmed in
both Access point mode and Server mode. In access point mode it connects
to a local Wi-Fi in order to connect to the internet, after which it can interact
with any module connected to the internet. The GUI was developed using MIT
Inventor-2 for Mobile App.The user can access the data using the GUI and
control the loads of the house as well.
(d) Who would be the beneficiary of this innovation and why?
A solar charged smart inverter system is self sufficient and reliable
system for home automation and monitoring power consumption of house
hold appliances.
