II. Problem or Hypothesis

1. This research aims to investigate both expressive and receptive communication

skills among preschool children with autism in urban and rural area in Malaysia.
2. This research intends to examine the current level of communication skills among
preschool children with autism in urban and rural area in Malaysia.

3. This research targets to observe the current method of teaching communication

 skills among preschool children with in rural and urban area in Malaysia.

4. This research proposes to provide interventions in expressive and receptive

communication skills among preschool children with autism in urban and rural
area in Malaysia.

5. This research plans to study whether after the interventions the preschool
children of autism in rural and urban area will make improvements.

III. Review of Related Literature

In Malaysia, the awareness of autism has increased in the last few years as evidenced by
the number of cases reported and parents seeking medical attention. Based on database
searches, the current state of communication skills among autistic children in Malaysia
has lots of improvements where the special education system invented lots of new
approaches such as engages in reciprocal interaction, picture exchange communication,
share emotions and many more. Hence, to strengthen the special education program in
Malaysia, the Ministry of Women, Family and Community provides proper trainings for
teachers to boost their knowledge and confidence to conduct their students in their
center.

The facilities available for children with ASD in Malaysia are different between urban and
rural areas. In the urban areas, there are public and private centers which offer various
intervention programs for children with ASD. One of it is Child Development Centre
(CDC) in Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Besides, it also has National Autism
Society of Malaysia (NASOM) for the non-governmental organizations dedicated for
autisms. These two centers, plays an important role in offering assessment and diagnosis
service to the autistic children in Malaysia.

On the other hand, in the rural areas, there are less facilities and centers to help children
with ASD. Many of the children stay at home or are sent to normal preschool, where
they do not receive appropriate interventions, as the teachers are not trained to identify
ASD and to assist them.
