Installation in a closed water lubricated system

General information:
1. If the propulsion engine / gearbox assembly is mounted on flexible mounts and NO
thrust block is installed, the shaft will travel a few mm’s forward and backward. The
PEGASUS Seal is designed to operate with a maximum travel of 5 mm forward and
backward movement. (Total maximum shaft travel = 10 mm).
2. Before mounting, it shall be checked, that no damages on the radial seal lip sets are
present.
3. The gap between the seals is to be filled with grease (type see parts list) before
installation. This grease will extend the service life of the seals.
4. The standard spare parts kits exist of the following items:
a. Packing ring
b. Isolators
c. 3 Pc split radial lip seal
d. New set of filler and spacer rings obtain a new radial lip seal contact faces.
5. If there are any concerns about the Pegasus Seal, do not hesitate to contact us
immediately.

Limitations
1. When in use, the seals can absorb a large radial swing of the shaft. Depending on the
shaft diameter, in combination with the actual shaft revs/min, this will vary. A
tolerance of the maximum radial dynamic movement of the shaft by not more than 0.4
mm is allowed.
2. If during operations a shaft will frequently swing more than 0.4 mm, a serious
alignment problem has shown up and immediately repairs are required. The shaft may
exceed marginally bigger radial movements during manoeuvring at lower speed.
3. When the shaft is NOT running, a maximum bearing clearance of 1% will still keep the
seals tight

Maintenance
1. It is advised to refill the gap between the seals with grease every time the seals are
replaced and/or when the shaft is replaced.
2. Every 5 years or max every 5000 running hours it is advised to check the condition of
the seals and the sealing face on the shaft. This can only be done by demounting the
seal from the tube, or if the shaft has to be removed.
3. In any case, the seals can be replaced without having the shaft and coupling
dismounted.
4. When supplied as a complete new seal the Pegasus seals are equipped with endless
seals and filler rings.
5. On the GA drawings of the seal, information on spare parts and methods of
replacement is given.

CHAPTER A
Installation of a complete new seal during vessel new-building-period or
during overhaul with removed propeller shaft.

1. Check if all parts and the sterntube system are free of damages, dirt and
grease.
2. Check if the seal is proper condition and all parts are in place and available.
3. Inside the seal a plastic cover is protecting the seals and is keeping the grease
between the radial lip seals in place. This gap between the seals is filled with grease
(type see parts list) and will extend the service life of the seals. Keep this cover in
place until the seal is to be fitted. (this will prevent that any dirt will get into the seal)
4. It is recommended to install the shaft before finally mounting the seal! In this way the
shaft can NOT damage the seal during mounting. BEFORE positioning the shaft
however you should check if the seal is fitting the tube correctly.
5. Before installing the shaft check if the springs of the radial lip seals are all in place.
6. Before mounting the shaft make sure that no sharp edges are showing on the shaft.
Further the shaft and liners need to be provided with smooth 15 degree chamfers
facilitating that the radial lip seals can slide in place.
7. When bringing the shaft in, slide the seal and gasket (item nr 6) over the shaft. Leave
the seal “hanging” on the shaft. The plastic cover, protecting the radial lip seals is not
to be removed until final fitting.
8. Gasket item 6 is required, as the seal is mounted against the aft side of the stern tube.
This gasket is to be positioned in such a way that the feed water flow to the water-
lubricated bearings is NOT blocked. (see sketch)
9. Place the gasket against the sterntube face using a little lithium grease to prevent
falling down.
10. Apply some pure TEXACO XLI inhibitor on the wearing liner obtain an easy fit.
11. Place the seal taking into account that the water inlet is in line with the tube lubrication
water inlet.
12. Make sure all isolators (items 7) are in place and mount the seal using bolts (items nr 8)
13. Torque tighten the mounting bolts up as per instructions on the drawing.
14. When also the forward seal is in place, fill the system with the mix of fresh water and
TEXACO XLI inhibitor (3%) concentration).
15. Open the isolation valves
16. Check for water flow through the seals.
17. Record pressure gauges reading.
18. Record system water temperature and
19. Compare the readings of all shaft lines.
20. If there are any significant differences, examine where these differences are coming
from. If no clear explanation can be found, the building yard is to be contacted
immediately.
Chapter B

Replacement Instructions for the seals by SPLIT seals with a propeller shaft
in position.

Originally endless radial lip seals are mounted.

The seal which is placed against the outboard water, this is the seal on the left in the
drawing (Item nr 2) is also equipped with a spring which has a vulcanised rubber lay to
protect it from corrosion. When the seals need to be replaced split seals are to be used.
Split seals have a split at 1 place and are seals, of which the rubber seal rings can be
replaced without the need to remove the propeller shaft. For replacement of the aft seal
set, following instructions are to be followed up.

1. Lock the shaft using the dedicated shaft locking device, if installed. This will prevent
the gearbox clutch to be activated.
2. Close the seal isolation valves of the water lubrication system.
3. Clean the shaft area right behind the seal thoroughly.
4. Remove the seal housing from the sterntube by loosening screws (item 8) and move
the seal away from the sterntube.
5. Gasket (item nr 6) needs to be replaced by the new split gasket!! So the old (item nr
6) need to be removed completely and both seal housing face and sterntube face
require to be thoroughly cleaning.
6. When the seal is moved away from the tube, loosen bolts item 8.
7. Remove ring item 5.
8. Take the seal set out of the housing. Avoid damaging of the shaft and the housing by
using the right tools.
9. Cut or saw the radial lip seal and its spring Item 2) of the shaft.
10. Also cut or saw the old rings (item nr 3 and 4) away.
11. DO NOT CUT THE RUBBERED SPRING AWAY. This spring is to be used on the new
seal.
12. If parts and paces are clean the bearing clearance is still within tolerance then we can
start mounting the new split radial lip seals and assemble the whole Pegasus seal
again.
13. Take the spring from each seal (see figurer 1) and unscrew the joint. Bring the spring
around the shaft until the connection of both end of the spring is visible and, holding
one end in each hand, twist the other end a few turns counter clockwise.
14. Take the spring away.
15. Take the first spacer ring out of the housing. There are 3 threaded holes in the face of
the ring that you can use to put a M6 screw in that will help pulling it out.
16. Remove the whole seal set in this way by using a small hook.
17. Check the clearance between shaft and seal housing at bottom side and at top side to
check if the bearings are worn out or not.
18. Check if the shaft sealing face is still in good condition and clean all faces thoroughly.
Remove any grease.
19. When placing new seals!! Use the new split spacer rings set (replacing item 3 and 4)
according the drawing below. This to create a new sealing face on the shaft liner.

CHAPTER C
Replacement of the complete seal or overhaul.

If the vessel is slipped and the aft shaft is dismounted and the seal as a complete item is to be
dismounted for an overhaul than follow these instructions are to be followed up.
1. When the shaft is to be pulled, always dismount the seal complete seal from the tube
so it rest on the shaft.
2. Close the seal isolation valves of the water lubrication system.
3. Clean the shaft right behind the seal thoroughly.
4. Remove screws (items nr 8)
5. Gasket (item nr 6) needs to be replaced by the new gasket!! So the old item nr 6 needs to
be removed completely and both seal house face and sterntube face require thorough
cleaning.
6. After removal of the screws the seal to rest on the shaft.
7. Remove the seal housing from the sterntube by loosening screws (item 8) and move
the seal forward away, from the sterntube.
8. When the seal is moved away from the shaft, loosen bolts (item 9).
9. Remove ring (item 5).
10. Take the seal set out of the seal housing.
11. If all is OK, parts are clean and the bearing clearance is still within tolerance then we
can start mounting the new split radial lip seals and assemble the whole Pegasus seal
again.
12. Take the first spacer ring out of the housing. There are 3 threaded holes in the face of
the ring that you can use to put a M6 screw in that will help pulling it out.
13. Remove the whole seal set in that way by using a small hook.
14. Check the clearance between shaft and seal housing at bottom side and at top side to
check if the bearings are worn out or not.
15. Check if the shaft sealing face is still in good condition and clean all faces thoroughly.
Remove any grease.
16. When placing new seals!! Use the new spacer rings set (replacing item 3 and 4)
according to the drawing chapter B (spare parts installed). This to create a new sealing
face on the shaft liner.
17. Place the first new seal with the ruberred spring in front of the seal.
18. Take both spring ends, wind them counter clockwise, bring the ends together and
release the spring ends to obtain a proper engagement. To counteract any ‘curl-in’
tendency at the split, the precautions, detailed in figs 1 – 3 (chapter B) shall always be
followed.
19. Pass the seal around the shaft and lift the spring into the groove in the seal lip.
20. Ensure that the two spring ends match perfectly, with the split at the top side.
21. Push the seal evenly into the chamber and also press firmly against the back side of
the housing.
22. During the installation of each seal ring, grease (according to parts list) shall be added.
23. Do not grease the seal facing the inner site as otherwise grease can come in the
system.
24. Double check that all springs are sitting correct in the seat of the radial lip seal.
25. From here follow the instructions as per installation at new build.
