System Safety
Before beginning any of the lab projects, please review the following safety guidelines:
• Turn off your display, remove all diskettes from the diskette drive, and unplug the
power cord to the system unit before attempting to remove the covers from the
system.
• Use the electrostatic device kit (one should have been provided for your lab group)
to minimize the risk of damage to electronic components inside the system. Please
ask your instructor for assistance if you do not know how to use an ESD kit.
Note: Avoid touching the internal electronic components unless you are
specifically requested to do so within a lab exercise.
Lab Introduction
Introduction
These lab projects are designed to teach you the skills that have been introduced in the
previous topics. In the lab activities, you will practice installing and operating server
systems by using the documentation and maintenance philosophy for the systems.
Limitations
• No computer game playing or copying of games is allowed in this class.
• Do not copy diskettes on any of the systems in the lab.
• Do not write on or exchange diskettes with another system.
• No beverages are allowed at your workstation when the covers are off.
• You will be expected to practice the proper ESD procedures while performing
maintenance on IBM systems.
Objectives
At the end of this lab activity, you should be able to do the following:
• Draw the cabling diagrams of a number of host/hub/controller/storage
enclosure combinations
• Determine the maximum number of hosts/drives a given configuration can
support
____2. You can assume that each host in every example is equipped with
two host bus adapters.
____3. You need not be too concerned about the precise detail of cables
within controllers and devices.
____6. When you have completed your diagrams, you will present your
findings to the class for discussion.
Dual host, dual hub, DS4800 controller, and two EXP710 storage enclosures.
Question: Without adding additional hubs or RAID controllers, how many hosts can
be supported by this configuration using redundant paths?
Answer: ____________________________________________________
Question: If you were to scale this configuration by adding additional EXP710s, what
is the maximum number of drives supported by this configuration?
Answer: ____________________________________________________
Answer: ____________________________________________________
Customer Scenario
A customer has eight servers (hosts). Servers one and two will be clustered and run
SQL. Servers three and four will be clustered running the mail services for the company.
Servers five and six are clustered for the internal Web services as well as for external
Web services. Servers seven and eight will not be clustered; however, both will be used
as file servers.
This customer will have nine EXP710s fully populated. The SQL database will use four
of the nine EXP710s. The mail services will use three of the nine EXP710s. The Web
services will use one EXP700, and the two file severs will share one EXP710.
This customer wants maximum hardware redundancy (the customer does not want
additional software redundancy methods). High Availability is the primary goal —
performance is a secondary, but important goal.

Using a separate sheet of paper, draw the diagram of the equipment used in this
customer’s scenario (servers, hubs and/or switches, RAID controller, EXP710 drive
enclosures and the cables connecting these components).
Lab Summary
In this exercise, you planned a number of fibre storage deployments.
Before actually cabling a system, you should take time to draw the system layout.
The resulting drawing acts as a blueprint for the final product.
The blueprint gives customers a graphical representation of the solution they are
purchasing. It also gives the technician a reference point for the overall system
look before he or she attempts to reconfigure a solution or repair a damaged one.
You presented your proposal to the class (acting as the customer) to ensure that
you have fully understood the implications of the proposal in terms of capacity
and fault tolerance.
You have now completed all the steps of this lab exercise.
Objectives
At the end of this lab activity, you should be able to do the following:
• Use the SAN Surfer utility to obtain configuration settings for the HBA BIOS
state, WWN, and ID state (hard/ soft)
• Use the SAN Surfer utility to scan for devices.
Using the Alt-Q POST level utility or SAN Surfer, gather the following information.
This information will be used later in the labs.

Lab Summary
In order to ensure a successful fibre implementation, a staged approach should be
adopted.
Because there are multiple components to be connected together, taking the staged
approach, and testing each stage in turn, reduces the likelihood of failures in the system
as a whole.
In this exercise, you have verified the cabling of the lab environment. You have also that
the HBAs can be viewed by the Alt-Q utility and/or SAN Surfer.
You have also flashed the adapters to ensure that they have the latest version of
microcode installed.
You have now completed the required steps for this lab.
Objectives
At the end of this lab activity, you should be able to do the following:
• Create arrays and logical drives, and set hot-spares
• Use the newly created resources under the NOS
• Retrieve the disk signatures for recovery purposes
____1. Locate the Storage System icon under your host in the left pane of
the Enterprise Management window.
NOTE: You may choose to select the option for Do not display this
screen again.
GB (under Units)
____17. At the Allocate Capacity screen select the location you wish
your next Logical drive to be created. We will choose the
<Free Capacity on your-array>, and click <Next>.
10 GB (Capacity)
GroupX-2(name)
____19. When you have completed creating the Logical Drives the
Subsystem Management window should look similar to the
graphic below.
At This Point:
At this point your screen should look like the following screen shot.
____4. Click <Next>. Type the host name of your server, select the WWPN
for the first HBA and click <Add>, repeat for the second HBA. (Enter
the WWPN from the chart on page 16)
____5. Select the first HBA in the right hand side window and click <Edit>
____6. Give the HBA an appropriate name (EX GROUP_HBA1) and click
<OK>
____8. Now specify the Host Type by selecting the appropriate Host Operating
System. For this lab, select Windows 2000/Windows 2003 Non-
Clustered and click Next.
____9. Select No – this host will NOT share access. And click <Next>
____10. Double check the information on the Preview screen and click
<Finish>
____11. Click <No> to the prompt Do you want to define another host?
____3. Select the Host or Host group you wish to work with and
click <Next>. In this class we only work with Hosts, Host
groups are for clustering.
____5. Next select the GroupX-2 logical drive and assign a LUN
number, then click <Add>.
NOTE: Your host (server) now has the GroupX-1 and GroupX-2
logical drive mapped to it as LUNs 0 and 1 respectively.
____7. The Storage Partitioning end result should look like this.
At This Point:
• Your hosts have moved out of the Default Host Group.
• Host GroupX has two (2) LUNs mapped to it (the 20GB drive
GroupX-1 and the 10GB drive GroupX-2).
• These LUNs are not accessible by other hosts since those drives
have been mapped to your host GroupX
Objectives
At the end of this lab activity, you should be able to do the following:
z Get your server to recognize your DS4000 storage.
Note: If the Write Signature Upgrade Disk Wizard does not start, click
<Action> then < Rescan Disks>. At this point you should see the
Unknown disks appear. Right-click on <Disk1> and select <Write
Signature>.
If Rescan Disks does not work logoff Remote Desktop and
reconnect.
____10. On the Format Partition screen, leave all defaults and also
check <Perform a Quick Format>. Click <Next>.
____16. On the Format Partition screen, leave all defaults and also
check <Perform a Quick Format>. Click <Next>.
At This Point:
• You have mounted the LUNs presented from the DS4800 on your
server.
• Created partitions
Objectives
At the end of this lab activity, you should be able to do the following:
z Configure the Flash Copy Utility
z Perform a Flash Copy
z Perform a Volume Copy
Creating a FlashCopy
____1. Create a text file with some data we can change on the
base logical drive you wish to create the FlashCopy of.
Call it flash.txt
____2. Right-click the base logical drive that contains your flash.txt
file. From the drop-down menu, click <Create Flash Copy
Logical Drive>.
NOTE: If you are not able to click on <Create Flash Copy Logical
Drive>, then you will have to enable FlashCopy using the
Premium Features option. Contact your instructor for
assistance.
NOTE: If you choose the Advanced option, you will be able to choose
or create the array with free space on which you want to create
your Flash Copy logical drive. You will also be able to set your
LUN mappings and set notifications about drive capacity.
NOTE: The default naming convention for Flash Copy is often sufficient.
____7. The next screen will show a confirmation of the Flash Copy
logical drive parameters. Click <Finish> to complete the
FlashCopy.
____3. At the Host group or Host drop down menu choose the host
you wish to see the Flash Copy drive from. We will choose
the same host as the base logical drive.
____4. Select a LUN number. Notice that the LUN space for the
host is used, in this case the next available LUN number is
2.
____7. Click <Close>. The LUN has been presented to the host.
____5. You should now see the new FlashCopy drive with a
different drive letter than the base FlashCopy drive.
NOTE: You may have wait several minutes or rescan for disks several
times before the new drive shows up.
NOTE: If the drive does not have a drive letter but appears as healthy,
then right click the drive and select <Change Drive Letter and
Path>, Select <Add> and assign the new drive a drive letter.
____10. One the base logical drive of the FlashCopy (Drive Z),
create a new text document named Flash.txt.
____11. double click on the file you created (Flash.txt), and add
content to the file.
____16. Open Windows Explorer and look at the two drives and
notice the file and contents are the same.
____18. Open Flash.txt on the Z: drive and add another line of text
and save the file. Refresh both Windows Explorer
windows, and reopen the Flash.txt files for comparison.
Notice there was no change to the FlashCopy (X:) drive’s
Flash.txt file.
____19. Adding files to the base logical drive (Z:) has no impact on
the FlashCopy drive (X:).
____20. You can now use a back up application to back up the new
FlashCopy (X:) drive, even if the base logical drive
changes. (This is just a suggestion, not a command.)
At This Point:
• You have created a FlashCopy drive of your 10GB GroupX-2 drive
• Modified data on the base logical drive and verified data has not
changed on the FlashCopy drive..
