Safety Precautions and Housekeeping

General Safety Guidelines
• Maintain good housekeeping in the area of the machines during and after
completing maintenance/configuration.
• Do not use solvents, cleaners, or oils that have not been approved by IBM.
• Lift by standing or pushing up with stronger leg muscles to take the strain off back
muscles. Do not attempt to lift any parts or equipment with which you feel
uncomfortable. Service personnel are responsible for making certain that no action
on his or her part renders a product unsafe or exposes the customer to hazards.
• Place removed machine covers in a safe out-of-the-way location while servicing the
machine. These covers must be back in place on the machine before the machine is
returned to the customer.
• Always place tool kits away from walk areas where no one can trip over them (for
example, under a desk or table).
• Avoid wearing loose clothing that may be caught in machinery. Shirt sleeves must
be left buttoned or rolled up above the elbow. Long hair and scarves must be
secured.
• Remove all watches and rings before removing the cover of any system.
• When servicing a machine, you must tuck ties into shirt or a tie clasp (preferably
non-conductive). Ties must be worn approximately three inches from the end.
• Before starting equipment, make sure that other service or customer personnel are
not in a hazardous position.
• Do not place books, tools, or test equipment on top of the machine.

System Safety
Before beginning any of the lab projects, please review the following safety guidelines:
• Turn off your display, remove all diskettes from the diskette drive, and unplug the
power cord to the system unit before attempting to remove the covers from the
system.
• Use the electrostatic device kit (one should have been provided for your lab group)
to minimize the risk of damage to electronic components inside the system. Please
ask your instructor for assistance if you do not know how to use an ESD kit.

Note: Avoid touching the internal electronic components unless you are
specifically requested to do so within a lab exercise.

Lab Project 1: Cable Configurations

Introduction
This lab is a paper exercise. The purpose of the exercise is to allow you to draw
several diagrams of possible storage configurations and to discover the limitations of
the configurations.

Objectives
At the end of this lab activity, you should be able to do the following:
• Draw the cabling diagrams of a number of host/hub/controller/storage
enclosure combinations
• Determine the maximum number of hosts/drives a given configuration can
support

System Cabling Diagrams

____1. The following three pages contain drawings of hosts, hubs,
controllers, and storage enclosures. You will examine the
drawings and trace the fiber cable connections required to
correctly configure the hardware.

____2. You can assume that each host in every example is equipped with
two host bus adapters.

____3. You need not be too concerned about the precise detail of cables
within controllers and devices.

____4. You will use more detailed diagrams in subsequent exercises

where you will be asked to identify, use and test physical
connections.

____5. Good documentation of any system is invaluable to ensure that

the solution is valid in the first place and can be easily diagnosed
for faults if they occur.

____6. When you have completed your diagrams, you will present your
findings to the class for discussion.

____7. Before you complete this exercise, nominate a spokesperson for

your lab group who will present your findings to class.

Customer Scenario
A customer has eight servers (hosts). Servers one and two will be clustered and run
SQL. Servers three and four will be clustered running the mail services for the company.
Servers five and six are clustered for the internal Web services as well as for external
Web services. Servers seven and eight will not be clustered; however, both will be used
as file servers.

This customer will have nine EXP710s fully populated. The SQL database will use four
of the nine EXP710s. The mail services will use three of the nine EXP710s. The Web
services will use one EXP700, and the two file severs will share one EXP710.

This customer wants maximum hardware redundancy (the customer does not want
additional software redundancy methods). High Availability is the primary goal —
performance is a secondary, but important goal.

Which storage controller will you implement and why?

Lab Summary
In this exercise, you planned a number of fibre storage deployments.

Before actually cabling a system, you should take time to draw the system layout.
The resulting drawing acts as a blueprint for the final product.

The blueprint gives customers a graphical representation of the solution they are
purchasing. It also gives the technician a reference point for the overall system
look before he or she attempts to reconfigure a solution or repair a damaged one.

You presented your proposal to the class (acting as the customer) to ensure that
you have fully understood the implications of the proposal in terms of capacity
and fault tolerance.

You have now completed all the steps of this lab exercise.

Lab Summary
In order to ensure a successful fibre implementation, a staged approach should be
adopted.

Because there are multiple components to be connected together, taking the staged
approach, and testing each stage in turn, reduces the likelihood of failures in the system
as a whole.

In this exercise, you have verified the cabling of the lab environment. You have also that
the HBAs can be viewed by the Alt-Q utility and/or SAN Surfer.

You have also flashed the adapters to ensure that they have the latest version of
microcode installed.

You have now completed the required steps for this lab.
