Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Pesticides are used widely in agriculture in the world. When effectively applied, it

can kill or control pests, including weeds, insects, fungi, bacteria and rodents. Chemical

pest control has contributed to dramatic increase in yields for most major fruit and

vegetable crops.

It is specially used by developing countries such as Philippines for agricultural

purposes.

One of the provinces in the Philippines that uses pesticide is Rizal that can be

found in Region IV-A. Gardeners and farmers in Angono, Rizal uses pesticides to

decrease the level of destroyed crops done by the pest.

A pesticide is a toxic chemical substance or mixture of biological agents that are

intentionally released into the environment in order to avert, deter, control and kill

population of harmful pest and insects.

Republic Act No. 10068 is also called as An Act Providing for the Development

and Promotion of Organic Agriculture in the Philippines and for other Purposes. This Act

declares that the policy of the State shall be promote, propagate, develop further and

implement the practice of organic agriculture in the Philippines in order to enrich the

fertility of the soil, increase farm productivity, reduce pollution and destruction of the

environment and prevent the depletion of natural resources.

1
The use of pesticides to manage pest problems has become common practice

around the world. Pesticides are used almost everywhere not only in agricultural fields,

but also in homes, parks, schools, forest and road. In addition, pesticides can be found

in the air we breathe, food we eat and the water we drink.

According to Rachel Carson’s book entitled Silent Spring in 1962, public must

raise awareness about the effects of pesticides on our health and environment.

The researchers conduct an experimental study on how to formulate organic

pesticides that will help everyone. They used natural ingredients such as Aloe Vera,

Lemon Grass, Cacao leaves, Garlic and Eucalyptus Oil. As the researchers do the

experiments they produce a pesticide which is called “ALOE CAO LAD”.

The study aimed to make ALOE CAO LAD as a popular pesticide that will help

to lessen health and environmental problems.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study will focus on The Effectiveness and Acceptability of Aloe Cao Lad

Pesticides in Angono, Rizal. The respondents are the gardeners who are residing in

Angono.

Experimental method of research was used to determine the effectiveness and

acceptability of Aloe Cao Lad pesticides in Angono Rizal.

The researchers only used organic plants such as Aloe vera, Lemon Grass,

Cacao leaves, Garlic, and Eucalyptus Oil in making the Aloe Cao Lad pesticide.

2
This study will be tested in a wooden box containing 10 several pests and this

will be tested in three trials. This box will serve as an artificial habitat of pests that are

present. This will show how effective Aloe Cao Lad pesticide is and it will lead to

acceptance of this as a new pesticide in Angono, Rizal.

The researchers will choose 30 respondents and in order to gather the data

needed for the study, a validated questionnaire checklist were administered to the

respondents

Theoretical Framework

According to Rachel Carson in her book entitled “Silent Spring” awareness must

be raise in public. Pesticides can affect health environment in a positive and in negative

way. The agricultural use of pesticides on Persistent Organic Pollutants, but it is still

used in some developing nation to decrease the level of health problem.

Conceptual Framework

The first frame, which is the input indicates the personal profile of the

respondents in terms of age, gender, and occupation and how effective the Aloe Cao

Lad Pesticide is.

The second frame refers to the evaluation and interpretation of data gathered.

3
The third paragraph shows the output of the study which determined the

Effectiveness and Acceptability of Aloe Cao Lad Pesticides in Angono,Rizal.

Statement of the Study

The study aimed to determine the Effectiveness and Acceptability of Aloe Cao

Lad Pesticide in Angono, Rizal.

Specifically, it soughts to answer the following questions.

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 Age

1.2 Gender; and

1.3 Occupation

2. How effective Aloe Cao Lad Pesticide is in terms of:

2.1 Trial 1

2.2 Trial 2

2.3 Trial 3

3. What are the things to consider for the people to accept Aloe Cao Lad Pesticide as

their new pesticide?

Hypothesis of the Study

If Aloe Cao Lad Pesticide is use as a organic pesticide and it will repel the pest

and insects away, it is to be an effective organic pesticide repellent.

5
Significance of the Study

Environment. It is an advantage for the environment because this study can

help to stop the spreading diseases from pests because some pest can carry bacteria

and might transfer them to a certain thing. And also it can make the environment safe

because it’s focuses on organic things.

Gardeners. It is an advantage for the gardeners because this study will provide

other people with alternative pesticides. This can also help the gardeners to control the

increasing amount of pest. It can also save gardeners money by preventing crop losses

because of its effectiveness.

Future Researchers. It is an advantage for the future researchers because this

research will help them to focus on other topic the researchers don’t yet know or the

researchers missed when researching about this topic. The researchers hope that this

research will help many people.

6
Definition of Terms

For a better understanding of the study the following terms were defined

operationally.

soil for the growing of crops and the rearing of animals to provide food and other

products.

vegetable.

Effectiveness - it is the degree to which something is successful in producing a

desired result; success

Gardener - it is a person who tends and cultivates a garden as a pastime or for

a living.

7
Garlic - it is a plant closely related to the onion that can be use in cooking and

in herbal medicine.

cultural difference.
