Save Fuel for Better

Environment
August 1 2018, This is the date of Global Overshoot Day (2018), an
annual event, when humans use more resources than the Earth can produce
in one year. According to Global Footprint Network “We are using 1.7 Earths”
worth of fuel. With all of this usage of non renewable fuel, let us look into
reasons and strategies to save fuel, for a better environment, and a better
world.
Reasons to Reduce Usage of Non Renewable Energy- Non Renewable
energy poses many risks for humans, and the environment, including:
• The mining of non renewable energy and their by-products, as they
cause damage to the environment. When fossil fuels are burned, nitrous
oxide is released, which causes pollution, creates acid rain, and greenhouse
gases are emitted.
• Non Renewable energy comes from sources that will deplete, and
run-out, and will not be replenished in many centuries.
• The burning of fossil fuels continues to rise producing high levels of
carbon dioxide (CO2) which climatologists believe is a major cause of
global warming.

• When mining petroleum, there is a possibility of an oil spill. If there is
a problem with the drilling machinery, oil can explode out of the well and
spill into the ocean or surrounding land, which is obviously harmful to the
environment.
Reasons to Increase Usage of Renewable Energy- Renewable energy
includes many benefits for humans and the environment, including:
• Renewable energy comes from a source that will not deplete,
including Solar Power, Wind Power, Geothermal Power, Hydropower, and
Thermal Energy.
• Renewable energy provides a clean energy source, because they are
non-pollutant, and do not contribute to greenhouse effects and global
warming.
• Whilst initial construction and installation is of high cost, the set up of
a renewable power source is covered, as it begins to repay itself over time.
Strategies to Reduce Non Renewable, and Increase Renewable Energy-
-Increase in Electric Vehicles: Nearly all vehicles run on non renewable
petroleum, rather than, the more eco-friendly electricity, due to the most
expensive part of the car, the battery, however the prices of these batteries
are decreasing, and the price of petrol is increasing. Furthermore electric
cars have very few moving parts, compared to a petrol car. This makes
maintaining them easier and less costly. Thus, electric cars are becoming
more practical, which means that if they are mass-produced, they will be in
high demand, which will be beneficial, both economically, and
environmentally.
-Decrease, and Elimination of Fossil Fuel: 80% of the world’s energy
comes from fossil fuels, which is an unsustainable source of energy, that is
harmful to the environment. While eliminating fossil fuel may seem
unrealistic, it is being done. In 2015 Sweden set an ambitious goal, to
eliminate fossil fuel usage within its borders, and increased investments in

solar energy, wind energy, energy storage, and smart grids. Several other
countries decided to follow this approach, by increasing usage of renewable
energy, these countries include Denmark, Germany, Nicaragua, Scotland,
and Uruguay. If more countries continue to decrease fossil fuel usage, and
increase use of renewable energy, we would see a significant decrease in
greenhouse gas emissions.
-Powering of New Buildings With Renewable Energy: The building
sector is growing at a rapid rate, by investing 30–40% of total global basic
resources. The present day buildings have become the third largest
consumer of non renewable energy after industry and agriculture. It is
obvious, that if new buildings were to be powered on renewable energy,
that there would be a significant positive impact to the environment. It is
being done in the form of ‘passive houses’, in countries such as Germany,
and Switzerland. ‘Passive Houses’ are houses with low non renewable
energy consumption, in which most of the energy comes from renewable
sources, such as solar energy, and geothermal energy. Introducing ‘passive
houses’ to more countries would create a major impact in advancing usage
of renewable energy.

To conclude, it is crucial to decrease non renewable energy, and

increase renewable energy, by increasing usage of electric cars, and
buildings powered by renewable energy, and decreasing usage of fossil
fuels. The environment is the source of human life, and it is important that
we preserve it.
