BPI INTERPRETATION FOR ADOLESCENTS

MENTAL HEALTH  Experiencing emotional difficulties. High score on


MALADJUSTMENT depression, Anxiety, Self
 Depression is often long-standing and related Depreciation, and
to familial discord, chronic difficulties at Deviation
school or significant loss (symbolic or real) of
meaningful relationship.

 Feelings of worthlessness and depression are


manifested in an “I don’t care” attitude which
makes the particularly Vulnerable to negative
peer influences

 Depressed about their past lives, they do not


expect their life to improve, they feel
inadequate and consequently some
contemplate suicide.

 Feelings of rejection by significant others


(parents/peers)
Interpersonal  Reflect an inability to accept direction, to Elevations on IPs, PId,
Maladjustment relate to significant others (e.g. peers, parents, and IME
and teachers) and to plan and act maturely
and responsibly

 Often express antiestablishment and


rebellious attitudes at school and home, but
they are not necessarily truly delinquent. They
are sensitive to criticism, they think that they
are singled out unfairly by authority figures
and although they characteristically behave in
a reckless and immature fashion, they demand
the opportunity to make their own decisions.

 These adolescents often require long term


personal contact before they confide their
difficulties.
Anti-social delinquency  Are usually very delinquent and have an Elevations ion Aln, IPs
extensive history of prior offences and court and IME
appearances. They tend to endorse socially
deviant attitudes and they tend to have
particular resentment for authority figures
and any direction or controls that those
authority figures represent.
 They are also characterized by impulsive
behavior and by their lack of concern or
remorse for their behavior.
Defensive Denial  Young offenders Elevated in Denial scale
 Unwilling to admit that they have difficulties
 They strive to appear healthy and well-
adjusted to the extent that they will not even
admit having minor faults

Performance anxiety  There is a tendency to simatitize their Elevated scores in


resulting in somatic emotional problems Hypochondriasis,
complaints  They usually have numerous bodily Anxiety and SOI
complaints such as headaches and
stomach difficulties
 May have chronic high level of anxiety
 Tendency for social isolation
