CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Problems

Vocabulary is one of the important factors in all language skill. To

master language skills namely listening, speaking, writing and reading. The

first thing should be learnt is vocabulary. The ability to understand target

language in communication with each other greatly depends on one person’s

knowledge of vocabulary. If students make grammatical mistakes, people still

understand them, but if the students do not know the words that they want to

express, it is very frustrating for them and the person whom they are talking

to. By having the great number of vocabularies, it is hoped that the students

are able to speak English fluently and spontaneously.

When Adam A.S. was tested by Allah SWT about names of the thing

in the world, it described that how important the role of vocabulary mastery to

achieve successful communication. At this time, Allah SWT tried to test

Adam A.S. whether he was a true man or not. If yes, He would take

responsibility from the God. This moment is described in Al-Qur’an on

Chapter Al- Baqarah in verse 31, as follows:

Holy Qur’an states:

“And He taught Adam all the names, and then showed them to the
angels, saying: Inform me of the names of these, if ye are truthful.”
(Q.S. Al-Baqarah: 31)1

The acquisition of vocabulary would help people in gaining,

understanding, and also enhancing the process of knowledgeable transferred

for a better life. Then, if acquirers do not recognize the meaning of the key

word used to those who address them, they will be unable to participate in

conversation. Indeed, if they wish to express some idea or ask for

information, they must be able to produce lexical items to convey their

meaning2.

Besides vocabulary is basic to communication. To be able to read and

speak English well, at least learners have to master 5000 new words3.

Because of the basic of language is comprehension, mastering vocabulary

must be needed4.

Based on the prelimary observation at SMPN 2 Kerinci when the

teaching English process. The students do not know how to enrich their

vocabulary, so they often lose interest in learning. It makes them passive in

the class. Besides, the researcher conducted the interview with the student;

they said that they fell difficult to speak with native, they are embarrassed

and afraid because they have limited vocabulary moreover, the researcher did

the interview with teacher, the teachers said that students have limited

vocabulary, because they inspirit when learning English.

The problems above are come both teaching materials and teaching

method. The students’ mastery of vocabulary will encourage them to

communicate with others fluently. The teacher should create attractive

method and materials in order to make students enjoy in studying English

vocabulary. The teachers purposes is not only teaching student but also

educating them. Teachers should be strict as well as concerned with the

students. The teacher should realize that he is not only a good teacher but also

a helpful friend to the students.

According to Mills the most successful teacher is one who is in close

touch with the students own problems and difficulties, and who appreciates

that in the early stages of a subject, progress by small steps is necessary to

achieve understanding5. Teachers must pay a great attention to harmonizing

the relations between them and their students so as to arouse the students‟

interest to study English.

In order to make students more active, and interesting in studying

English vocabulary, teachers teaching methods and materials will have a

direct impact on their interest in learning. For example the teacher should

convince that English is important thing for them and the teacher should use

appropriate technique, such as game. Thus make the students study well 6. By

using appropriate technique to learn new vocabulary, students will find it

useful and interesting. Language teachers, therefore, should posses’

considerable knowledge on how to manage an interesting classroom and

learners can gain a great success in their vocabulary learning.

From the discussion above, the researcher assumes that teaching

English by games is an attractive technique to stimulate and encourage the

students enriching their vocabulary and enjoy in studying English. Because of

that, the researcher will try to use Bingo Verb Game to enrich students’

vocabulary mastery.

B. Limitation of the Problem

In this case, the researcher limit the research on the effect of using

Bingo Verb Game(BVG) Towards students vocabulary at eight grade students

of SMP N 2 Kerinci in the academic year 2017/2017.

C. Research Questions

Based on the limitation of the problem above, there are many

problems that arise. The problems that will be discussed in this research as

follows : Is there any significant effect of using BVG strategy towards

students vocabulary mastery at eight grade students of SMPN 2 Kerinci

The purpose of the research is to find out the significant effect of

using bingo game toward vocabulary mastery of the eight grade students of

SMPN 2 Kerinci in the academic year of 2017/2018.

E. Significances of the Research

This research will be beneficial as follows:

1. Theoretically: The findings of this research can enrich experience of

teachers in applying teaching strategies to improve students’‟ English

vocabulary.

2. Practically: The first is for the researcher, the findings of the research can

be used as a starting point in improving the researcher teaching ability.

The second is for the students, the findings of this research are very useful

for the students to improve their English vocabulary and make sure that

English is fun to be learned. The last is for the English teachers, the

findings of this research can be used as consideration in selecting the

appropriate methods or techniques implemented in English class.

F. Hypothesis

H0 : There is a significant effect of using Binggo Verb Game (BVG)

toward students’ vocabulary mastery at the eighth grade students

of SMPN 2 Kerinci.

H1 : There is no significant effect of using Binggo Verb Game (BVG)

toward students’ vocabulary mastery at the eighth grade students

of SMPN 2 Kerinci.

G. Definition of Key Terms

Some terms, which are involved in this study, need some

explanation as to avoid misinterpretation and misunderstanding.

a. Vocabulary : Vocabulary is an important element in

teaching English. Brown also states that

vocabulary is the basic building block of the

language7

Vocabulary is a total number of words that

build a language. Obviously it is very

important to posse’s vocabulary by any

individual who want to speak in a certain

language especially by Junior High School

as second experience after the elementary

school in learning English

b. Bingo : A game which lets the whole class or small

groups play. The teacher can serve as the

caller, or students can take turns serving as

the caller. The caller calls out the definition,

then the players have to determine if their

bingo card has the word that matches the

definition8

Bingo Game is a game played by small or

large groups in which the first group to

mark a complete row of words is the winner

and calls out “Bingo!”. Game like Bingo

provides an interesting and motivating way

to review and reinforce vocabulary words.
