A SUMMARY PARAGRAPH

A summary is a record in a reader's own words that gives the main points of a piece of writing such as a
newspaper article, the chapter of a book, or even a whole book., it contains the most important ideas of the
author. To summarize, you must read a passage carefully, finding the main and supporting ideas. Then you
could rewrite those ideas in a few sentences or a paragraph.

It is important to understand the difference between a summary and a paraphrase because paraphrase is
simply a rewriting of a passage in your own words, but summary contains only the main idea and the supporting
ideas of a passage. A summary will be much shorter than a paraphrase.

HOW TO SUMMARIZE A PARAGRAPH

1. Preview and read. Preview and read the paragraph closely maybe more than one time.

2. Make a list or outline. Determine the main idea and the supporting details of

the paragraph, underline all the important points and all the important evidence

3. Write a summary. Using your list, write a summary of the paragraph. State

the main ideas.

4. Read aloud and correct. Read the summary aloud, correcting any mistakes.

PARTS OF A SUMMARIZE PARAGRAPH

TOPIC SENTENCE: The topic sentence of your paragraph must have what will you talk about.

SUPPORTING IDEAS: Look for supporting points and evidence that help prove the main point

CONCLUSION: Conclude with a reinforcement of the main point of the article.

EXAMPLES OF A SUMMARY

In "My Favorite Shoe," Treyvon Jones explains that Nike shoes are the best brand of running shoe for serious
track athletes. Jones supports this view by pointing out that Nike shoes are more comfortable, last longer, and
provide more cushioning for the feet. He notes that the statistics from sales and scientific evidence of how Nike
shoes are better for the feet support his claim. In addition, Jones points out that most professional runners use
Nike and he tells his own story of how he won the 100-meter men's competition after switching to Nike shoes.

ESSAY

An essay is a short piece of writing from a personal point of view that methodically analyze and evaluates a
topic or issue. Fact (as opposed to fiction), short (in comparison to a story book, at least) and subjective, an
essay describes, clarifies and analyses a subject.
Essays are used to assess your understanding of specific ideas and your ability to explain these in your own
words. They follow a structure: you will set out your argument in the introduction, build and present your
argument in the main body, and should end with your overall key message or argument in the conclusion. You
will need to set aside time for the following stages of writing:

1. Thinking about the question. 5. Writing a first draft.

2. Gathering information and ideas. 6. Reviewing in light of feedback or reflection.
3. Organizing your ideas. 7. Producing a final draft.
4. Getting something on paper.

PARTS OF AN ESSAY:
Introduction Paragraph: The introduction paragraph is the first paragraph of your essay. It introduces the
main idea of your essay. A good opening paragraph captures the interest of your reader and tells why
your topic is important

1. Write the thesis statement. The main idea of the essay is stated in a single sentence called the
thesis statement. You must limit your entire essay to the topic you have introduced in your thesis
statement.
2. Provide some background information about your topic. You can use interesting facts,
quotations, or definitions of important terms you will use later in the essay.

Example:

Hockey has been a part of life in Canada for over 120 years. It has evolved into an extremely popular sport
watched and played by millions of Canadians. The game has gone through several changes since hockey
was first played in Canada.

Supporting Paragraphs: Supporting paragraphs make up the main body of your essay. They develop the
main idea of your essay.

1. List the points that develop the main idea of your essay.
2. Place each supporting point in its own paragraph.
3. Develop each supporting point with facts, details, and examples.

To connect your supporting paragraphs, you should use special transition words. Transition words link
your paragraphs together and make your essay easier to read. Use them at the beginning and end of your
paragraphs.

Examples of transition words that can help you to link your paragraphs together:

For listing different For counter examples For additional ideas To show cause and
points effect
First However Nevertheless Therefore
Second Even though In addition to Thus
Third On the other hand Related to As a result of
Nevertheless Furthermore Consequently
Also

Summary Paragraph or Concluding Paragraph: The summary paragraph comes at the end of your essay after you
have finished developing your ideas. The summary paragraph is often called a "conclusion." It summarizes or restates
the main idea of the essay. You want to leave the reader with a sense that your essay is complete.
1. Restate the strongest points of your essay that support your main idea.
2. Conclude your essay by restating the main idea in different words.
3. Give your personal opinion or suggest a plan for action.

Example:

Overall, the changes that occurred in hockey have helped to improve the game. Hockey is faster and more exciting
as a result of changes in the past 120 years. For these reasons, modern hockey is a better game than hockey in the
1890s.
