ABSTRACT

This study was taken with the general objective of looking into methods in which

depression can be prevented as well as treated within the set up as well as the immediate society

is affected . This is conducted to be able to provide recommendations for every individual who

feel depressed.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Depression has been identified as a major factor leading to suicide. Depression is a

significant factor when it comes to the psychological well-being of an individual. It makes

affects the mental, physical, and emotional abilities of a person. When affected by depression an

individual tends to have fatigue affecting their ability to carry out their day-to-day activities,

mood swings affecting their association with others and absent mindedness that can lead to

accidents.

Depression is considered to be one of the most common diseases in the world today. It

is a disease that affects all people irrespective of their social status, educational background,

gender or race. Depression affects an individual’s feelings and adjustment to how they feel.

Although many people suffer from depression, very few people have gone to hospital for

treatment. This makes depression a major cause of concern.

On the other hand, depression is a treatable mental illness. There are three components

to the management of depression, first is support, ranging from discussing practical solutions and

contributing stresses, to educating family members, second is psychotherapy, also known as

talking therapies, last is drug treatment, specifically antidepressants.

5
Psychological or talking therapies for depression include cognitive-behavioral therapy,

interpersonal psychotherapy and problem solving treatment, in moderate and severe cases of

depression, psychotherapies are the first option for treatment; in moderate and severe cases, they

may be used alongside other treatment. While, antidepressants are drugs available on

prescription from a doctor. Drugs come into use for moderate to severe depression, but are not

recommended for children, and will only prescribed with caution for adolescents.

Believe it or not, the best antidepressants on earth don’t come from a pill bottle. From

getting more sleep to taking up hobby, making simple changes in your life can help boost your

mood and prevent depression. Find ways to handle stress and improve your self-esteem. Take

good care of yourself, get enough sleep, eat well, and exercise regularly. Reach to family and

friends when times get hard. Get regular medical check-ups, and see your provider if you don’t

feel right. Get help if you think you’re depressed because if you wait, it could get worse.

Education for people with depression is extremely valuable. Education provides a

knowledge base that potentially gives the person greater control over his or her disorder. Greater

control in turn may lead to reduced feelings of helplessness and an increased sense of well-being.

The most essential pieces of information for a person with a major depressive episodes are that

depression is a common disorder and that effective treatments are available.

CHAPTER IV

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents the analysis and interpretation of data gathered regarding the

depression leads to suicide in association with their age and gender.

There are two sections in this chapter:

SECTION I – PROFILE OF RESPONDENTS

TABLE 1. SEXUAL PREFERENCE OF THE RESPONDENTS

SEXUAL PREFERENCE FREQUENCY PERCENTAGE

MALE 7 35%

FEMALE 13 65%

TOTAL 20 100%

Table 1 shows the frequency distribution of the sexual preference of the respondents.

Females got the highest frequency, which is 65% of the entire sample followed by males with

35%.

This is because depression is about twice as common in women than in men.

A team of researchers led by Neel Burton, an author of growing from depression,

Table 2 shows the frequency distribution of the age of the respondents. Respondents with the

age of eighteen years (18) got the highest frequency rate of 55% of the entire sample while the

respondents with the lowest frequency rate of 5% have an age of twenty years (20).

SECTION II – REASONS OF HAVING POOR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN

The response on the depression leads to suicide, ways to prevent it questionnaires that are

1. The selected individual who recovered depressive episode should change on how they

handle stress.

2. Females should be attentive particularly in any academic activities to prevent poor

academic performance. They should practice self-control and self-discipline so that

they will be able to maintain their performance in a good state.

3. Students should be aware of what will happen in the future especially when they are

going to find a stable job if they have poor performance in school since an educational

background is one of the biggest factor for an employer to accept you in their company.

Students who are in legal age should do their best to keep up their academic

performance. This will help them find a part-time job in a big company.

4. The teachers should pay extra attention to those who got low academic performance in

their subjects and teach them slowly but precisely to make them understand. They

should not pressure their students; instead they have to encourage them to motivate

them.

5. The students should not make any unnecessary things unrelated to the class during

school hours. This is to make them concentrate in the lessons presented either by the

teacher or the student assigned.
