NAFSA Research Symposium


NAFSA: Association of International Educators invites research proposals for the next NAFSA
Research Symposium on Friday, November 22, 2019 (during International Education Week),
which will be held in Washington, DC. The Research Symposium serves the research
community in the field of international education and related disciplines by providing researchers
and scholars the opportunity to share their work in an academic and professional environment
and participate in a critical discussion of the theories, methodologies, and practices being used in
their research. The Research Symposium is thereby considered relevant to international
education researchers at every stage of their career – graduate students, post-docs, faculty
members, and practitioners. Please review the Call for Proposals (http://bit.ly/Nov19RScfp)
before submitting your one-page proposal online. Proposals are due by September 2, 2019.

Research and International Study Trips


From June 24 to July 6th, 2019, Prof. Bernhard Streitwieser of the George Washington
University (Washington, DC) led a research study tour to Germany entitled, Integration of
Migrants and Refugees into Higher Education: Case Study Germany. A testimony by one of the
students (Alexandra Croteau, MA Candidate in International Education) follows.
I chose to participate in this course to
obtain a first-hand account of issues
involved in educating people with refugee
backgrounds. During our 12-day tour I
was able to gain a deep understanding of
many aspects of support provided to
people with refugee backgrounds in the
German context. We met with the mayor
of Chemnitz, with the Spokesman for
Higher Education and Research in the
Berlin Senate, with the
Top official at the Federal Office for
Migration and Refugees, with the director
of the German Academic Exchange
Service (DAAD), among many others,
along with a large variety of officials
spanning from the government level to
civil society, and from research
institutions to university personnel and of

course individual students of refugee backgrounds.

What was especially insightful was the opportunity to analyze each feature of the
‘refugee educational journal in Germany’ in the three different cities of Hamburg,
Chemnitz, and Berlin. This allowed for an in-depth dive into many focus areas, including
exploring the language issue, psychosocial support needs, and the meaning of integration
vs. assimilation. Especially in this time of turmoil in relation to immigration, gaining a
perspective from a country like Germany where “refugees are welcome” encourages us
in the current U.S. context to take a stance and support those who have been forced to
leave their country and begin again in a new setting.

Books

Gregory Malveaux and Rosalind Raby are pleased to announce the publication of Study Abroad
Opportunities for Community College Students and Strategies for Global Learning (IGI-Global).
This is the first book on community college education abroad. The chapters in the book
showcase education abroad at rural community colleges, within technical and career programs,
and for racially and economically diverse students. Authors
are community college education abroad directors,
providers, and academics who study community colleges.
Empirical and case studies reflect on the changing field and
inform on important issues such as access, diversity,
engagement, and assessment. Most importantly, the chapters
in this book dismantle the claims that education abroad is
underutilized at community colleges. Eight broad themes
showcase the unique contributions made by community
colleges. (1) Measures for success; (2) Embedding
education abroad into campus community; (3) Stakeholders;
(4) Institutional factors; (5) Program development; (6) Social

Scholarly and Professional Development Opportunities

Dissertation and Thesis Committees Openings Worldwide

STAR Scholars Network is seeking colleagues to serve on committees for doctoral and master of
philosophy degrees in selected universities in Asia. Each selected scholar will be invited to read
one or two dissertations per year. The University or department may invite you to join the
dissertation defense onsite depending on the funding available for the external examiners. Please
