Rearing a Child: Parents’ Attitudes and Beliefs

Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

This chapter introduces the topic of the study. It also provides the

backgrounds about the problem. This chapter also presents statement of the

problem, significance of the study, scope and limitation of the study, theoretical

background and definition of terms.

Introduction

All countries have different ways on how parents raise their children. Most

of the country where the mothers are the one who are more overprotective

when it comes in raising their children compared to the father. There are times

that the beliefs of mother and father are not similar. Some countries are not so

strict and they are letting their children to be more independent and do what

they want because they believe that if they let their children to be independent,

their children will learn and discover a lot of things and it will boast their self

confidence and creativity. Parent-child relationship has a major impact to the

child’s development. Parents are the one who are the role model of every

children and how parent raised them will be reflecting to the child’s

development. In the Philippines, many parents are raising their children

based on their attitude and beliefs. It is inherited from their ancestors

because of the culture and traditions. They let their children grow by

their guidance. Before most of the children are beaten by their parents

as a discipline to them. At that time it easier for them to express their

feelings to their children because many parents thought if children are

afraid of them they will learn more and discipline in an early age. Many

parents tend to this because of their past traditions. But on June 17, 1992

Republic of the Philippines declared the Republic Act No. 7610 it is AN ACT

PROVIDING FOR STRONGER DETERRENCE AND SPECIAL

PROTECTION AGAINST CHILD ABUSE, EXPLOITATION AND

DISCRIMINATION, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES. largest body of

legislation with regard to the fair, ethical, and legal treatment of children and is

intended to keep them free from all forms of abuse including physical, sexual,

emotional, and psychological. Child abuse can cause children to an early

depression, they will have their own response to the trauma. While some

children have long-lasting effects, others are able to recover quicker. There is

not a right or wrong way for a child to manage effects of the abuse and neglect
they have suffered. Also there are some parents believe that if they let their

children do everything without their guidance can help their children more

independent without them. Based on the observations of the researchers, some

parents of Pulo Elementary School are also in the same situation of parent

raising their children based on their attitude and beliefs. In Pulo Elementary

School every morning parents delivering their children to school they make

sure they’re secured. There are some parents that are staying in their children’s

school in their whole class hours. Some children are spoiled to their parents.

Many of the parents are overprotective and never leaves their children alone.

Every lunch break may parents are helping their children to eat while enjoying

their family time but many children are alone or just eating with their

classmates without the guidance of their parents.

The researchers conducted this study to know the different strategies of

every parents in raising their children. And to identify the reasons why parents

raising their children based on their beliefs and how the children will adopt

their beliefs and attitudes.

Statement of the Problem

1. What are the strategies of the parents in raising their children?

2. How can children adopt the beliefs/attitudes of their parents?

3. How do parents influence their children’s development?

Significance of the Study

The main objective of this study is to:

The researchers believed that this study will be beneficial to the following:

Parents. With this study parents will be able to recognize their ways on how

they raise their children so that they may know if they raise their children well

using their own beliefs.

Children. This study will help the children identify the different ways to their

parents in raising them so that they may know if they will adopt the beliefs of

their parents in raising them.

Family. This study will help the family identify the different attitudes of every

member so that they may know how they will interact with each other.

Community. This study will help the community identify the different ways on

how parents raise their chil3 so that they will know howbto interact with them.

Researchers. This study will help the researchers identify the attitudes of every

parents so that they may know if the children will adopt it from them.

Future Researchers. This study will also help the future researchers to gather

information on the Attitudes and Beliefs of the parents used in raising their

children and they can use this as a basis of their studies.

Scope and Delimitation

This study involves (5) five parents and (5) five students from Pulo Elementary School.

To know the ways on how parents guide their children and how it affects their children’s

development. It includes different ways and experiences in rearing a child. On the other

hand it does not include any other informations/issues that are not connected to the parent

and child.

Definition of terms

The following terms used by the researchers in this study are defined conceptually as

follows:

Adopt. This means to begin to use or have (different, manner, method etc) This means

to begin to use or have (different, manner, method etc)

Attitude. It is the way a person thinks and feels about someone or something.

Children. Children are young persons.

Development. It is the act or process of growing or causing something to grow or

become larger or more advanced.

Influence. It is the power to change or affect someone or something..

Parent. Parent is a person who is a father or mother.

Rearing. This means to take care of a young person.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents all the related literature and studies used by the researchers

that are related to the current study.

Local Literature

Matabuena (2017) said that the working parents should learn on how they will

balance their time correctly to give their children enough attention that they are needed.

Parents are getting busier because of the demands from their career. Parents should learn

how to manage their time correctly and they must always be present for their children and

do not rely too much on the helpers and relatives as much as possible. It can makes the

children feel more secure. Parents must also strike a balance between discipline and love,

firmness and warmth. Parents might think that being a friend is enough but its not, in fact

experts claim that tjis can actually negatively affect their growth. lit

Ochoa & Torre (N.D.) explained that some schools foster healthy parental

involvement but sometimes parents haz hesitations if they will involve themselves with their

children's education. Parenting is important in the Philippine society because family is

viewed as a center to one's social world. lit

According to Belarmino (2015) , parents across all economic status experience

difficulties disciplining their children. They end up complaining on how their children have

become hard-headed, spoiled, arrogant and disrespectful but the truth is, the Filipino norm

when it comes to disciplining children is to punish them.

Psychologist Baurind(n.d.) identified four commonly refference of parenting styles

the authorative, authoritarian, permissive and uninvolved. An authorative is comparable to a

democratic style of parenting. An authoritarian typically involves parents who have a high

level of expectations for their children but little communiction with each other. Permissive

typically take on the role of being thier kids friend rather than parent. An uninvolved
parenting style is utilized by parents who are found to neglect their children's need by

putting their own needs.

Foreign Literature

According to Moges, B. and Weber, K. (2014) Parents should know their limits when

it comes in raising a children because sometimes it can affects children emotionally, socially

and physically. We accept that there is no perfect formula for parents to model behavior or

speak to children in certain ways to make them have a perfect emotional development

experience. Parents should help children by giving them a supportive environment, positive

feedback, role models of healthy behavior and interactions, and someone to talk to about

their emotional reactions to their experiences.

Hartline, K. (n.d) said that children must grown up in the environment where have

some impact on what type of personality characteristics they develop. In addition, if a family

does not have any sort of structure within the household, children will be much more

impulsive and may get into trouble more often than children who come from structured

households.

ASPCC (2014) stated that a child who grows up knowing that he or she is in control

and is ever right. He or she becomes a spoilt child who believes that he or she must always

have their way in everything. This has negative effects on the relationships that the child gets

into.

In addition, Alexander, T. (n.d) explained that the way you raise your children can

affect how successful they will be later in life. It is a type of child rearing practices that affect

children's life outcomes.

According to Litteacher8 (2011) , parents influence their children in a countless ways.

Many children are devised some traits from their parents and then the parents create their

own environment for their children raised in.

Early Learning (2016) claimed that it is normal or okay for adults to not interfere in

the child’s activities by not placing too many restrictions or guidelines on children’s play and

exploration, adults expose the child to controlled dangers so that he/she can experiment and

learn through risk taking. Instead of telling the children how to behave or punishing them

for misbehaving, discipline is commonly taught through humour, teasing and surprised

responses, and sometimes even the use of scary beings.

Erick Fisher (n.d) stated that Most children want to be like adults, speak like adults,

dress like adults and behave like adults often way before their time. The parallel was made to

language. Consider people who swear a lot, they often don't pay attention to when they are

swearing, the words just come out, and they are numb to their influence on others.

Dr Chanana, C. (2006) explained that during early years of life by providing constant

parental support and reassuring the child that he is safe and secure helps instill confidence

and character in him. During teenage too parental supervision and guidance is equally if not

more important as it prevents adolescent’s from turning to peer groups and indulging in

activities like , alcohol and in times of difficulty and depression which are an integral part of

growing up.

According to Merriam Webster (n.d.), child rearing is a process of taking care of and

raising children.

Littunen, S. (2001) mentioned that beliefs have been a topic of considerable interest

among researchers in various fields. Throughout the discussion the question of the origins of
parental beliefs and the belief, behaviour dilemma are dealt with. Finally, the implications of

the findings and suggestions for future research are presented.

Cambridge Dictionary (n.d.) stated that rearing a child is the work of taking care of

children until they are old enough to take care of themselves.

Baig, A. (n.d) said that parents have different child rearing practices in different

societies, but it is a common factor that all parents want their child to act like an obedient

and good child and if the child does not fulfill this requirement, parents try their level best to

make them a good person.

Justbluedutch (2016) found so common in Filipino parenting that they are totally

hands-on and attached to their child. Filipina mothers are known to be good homeworkers

and caring for their child. Maybe this is the reason why many Filipinas who worked abroad

as a Nanny have a distinct reputation of being excellent in raising kids.

De Leon (2012) stated that child rearing practices vary from culture to culture,

influenced by a myriad of factors that include environment, education, income, family

structure, religion and many others. Child rearing differ even among people of same culture

in different economic and environmental situations. Child rearing in urban and rural areas

may be very dissimilar.

Guthrie & Jacobs (n.d.) said one of the biggest role in child’s development is the

comparative analysis of the child-rearing practices of the Philippines. This can help them to

be functional in the community but everyone has different societies and different cultures

when it comes in rearing a child.

Hays (2008) explained that a filipino child receives an abundance of love and

affection from all members of the extended family and is seldom chatised. He will have a

tendency not to do things alone, and this remains all his life. A certain norms of conduct
expected of the child reflect values held by the extended family. Lost of dignity by a family

member results in shame for the whole family.

According to Bartleby.com (2013) higher pay overseas have urged many Filipinos to

work abroad and leave their families for years. Many Filipino workers were deployed to

various parts of globe. A number of children experience the absence of father and mother

who tend to come home only once in every two to three years. The situation is far from

normal and is more-likely to cause a huge impact on the mental and emotional well-being of

the children. The increasing amount of absentee parents becomes more alarming because

without them, discipline is not enforced at home.

Ocampo (2000) stated that the Filipino society is a child-oriented society. The child

is basically a product of several agencies, the most important roles in the upbringing and

educating the child, although some differences and possible conflicts might be found in the

approaches of these two socializing agencies.

Foreign Studies

The study of Grusec (2014) titled Parents’ Attitudes and Beliefs: Their Impact on Children’s

Development the results showed that the parent cognitions, beliefs, thoughts and feelings can

expand our knowledge about child development. It can affect the children by influencing

their parent positively and negatively. It can be a good predictor of the behavior of parents

because the can indicate the emotional relationship of parents and children in health

Tocu (2014) study titled Study on the parental beliefs and attitudes towards child rearing and

education found that the most important aspect of psycho-social development of the child is

the attitude towards child rearing and education of the parents. Present study examinees the

parental beliefs and attitudes towards child rearing has the big impact to them.
According to the study of Breiner et.al. (2016) The result of Parenting Matters: Supporting

Parents of Children Ages 0-8 parenting knowledge, attitudes and practices that are positively

interacted with the child ages birth to 8 has healthy development. The study describes

findings regarding how core parenting knowledge and practices may differ by specific

chracteristics of children and parents.

The study of Goodson (2005) titled Parent Support Programs and Outcomes for Children

showed that the parent support interventions on the result of the children. The program

evaluation have shown the changes of the parents is difficult to produce and sustain the

comprehensive changes of the parents. There are positive consequences of the subsquent

link in the children's development.

Based on the study of Chen et.al (2002) titled Noncompliance and child-rearing attitudes as

predictors of aggressive behaviour: A longitudinal study in Chinese children the examine contributions

of early personal and socialisation factors to the prediction of aggressive behaviour in

Chinese children. The results showed that boys has more physical and verbal agression at 4

years of age than girls. Parental child-rearing attitudes had unique, but generally has a weak

contributions to the prediction of aggressions. Boys and girls has different relations between

child-rearing variables and child regression.

Smith et.al (2016) titled Parenting and Child Rearing Attitudes of Unmarried Hispanic

Teenage Mothers said to their study describes about the personal characteristics and child

rearing attitudes of unmarried, Hispanic teenage mothers and compares their risk for

negative parenting attributes associated with the child maltreatment.

Dijk et.al. (2015) study titled Parental child-rearing attitudes are associated with functional

constipation in childhood found out that parental child-rearing attitudes are associated with

functional constipation in children. Anything issues about parenting should be addressed

during the treatment of children with constipation. Child relationship is at risk about to

mental health services needed when parenting difficulties hinder.

Bogels, et.al (2006) titled Family issues in child anxiety: Attachment, family functioning, parental

rearing and beliefs the results found out that the family studies have found a large ovelrap

between anxiety disorders in family member. Parental anxiety us reviewed between the

relationship and family evidence.

The study of Oncu & Unluer (2012) titled Parent s’ attitude towards their children before and

after parental education found out about early childhood devolpment concludes that parents,

especially mothers play crucial role in young children's life therefore parental education is

important for the healthy development of the children.

In the study of Emily P. et.al. (2000) titled Mothers' and Fathers' Attitudes Toward Their

Children's Academic Performance and Children's Perceptions of Their Academic Competence the results

showed the two types of parental attitudes parents level of satisfication with their children's

performance in school and the importance parents place on children's academic success.

Landry (2014) titled The role of parents in early childhood learning it depends on the

interactions or the relationship of the parent the children’s problem solving, language and

social-emotional skills. It depends on the parenting style of the responsiveness supports on

child’s development.

Baker,& Hoerger, (2012) titled Parental Child-Rearing Strategies Influence Self-Regulation,

Socio-Emotional Adjustment, and Psychopathology in Early Adulthood: Evidence from a Retrospective

Cohort Study the self-regulation during early adulthood are related to the parental warmth,

rejection, and overcontrol. It is stated that the parental warmth are more associated in with
improved interpersonal and academic adjustment, while parental rejection was most closely

related to internalizing clinical presentations like anxiety, depression, and somatization.

Ebbeck & Gokhale (2004) titled Child-rearing Practices in a Selected Sample of Parents with

Children in Childcare in Singapore the number of investigated a number of elements of child

rearing in a sample of 40 parents using an early childhood center. Also they investigated

about the outcome of the learning and development of the children on their parents

caregiving practices, belief and expectations to them.

Calderon, (2018) titled Changing Parental Behavior with behavioral tools can help children

reach their full potential through schooling everyone thinks that children issues throught it. The

research and policy of parents' role has become kind of lost. They spend less time of school

versus in the company of their parents.

Schulze, (2004) titled Filipino Mothers' Beliefs about parenting: A Question of

Independence says that the Filipino mothers' socialization goals and beliefs about the role of other

adults in disciplining their children. Filipino have a collectivistic orientation but they

nevertheless encourage independence in their children.

Local Studies

According to the study of Shute et al. (2011) titled A Review of the Relationship between

Parental Involvement and Secondary School Students' Academic Achievement one of the biggest factors

of child’s peer relationships, direct parental influence has parents over limited influence. The

study involved the design of policies, practices, and interventions should reflect an

understanding of these findings about the nature and magnitude of parental influence on

children’s academic achievement.

Alampay & Jocson (2012) titled Attributions and Attitudes of Mothers and Fathers in the

Philippines presented to the account of findings of cultural explanations specifically the

values of sociocultural that the family roles of Filipino mothers and fathers has foster

traditional attitudes favoring parental authority and child obedience, and the differences in

gender.

Based on the study of Rousseau (2009) titled From the family universe to the outside world:

Family relations, school attitude, and perception of racism in Caribbean and Filipino adolescents he stated

that there have much in common of Caribbean and Filipino families in Canada. Some

children may be separated from their parents for a long time at the first generation and they

expectedly dealing with the negative stereotypes of their ethnic group.

Lanzarrote et al. (n.d.) titled Child Rearing Practices Among Families in Countryside

Philippines discusses a study on child-rearing practices in a countryside Philippines,

specifically Catbalogan City. It says that personal variateswere considered the highest

influences to child rearing practices followed by beliefs and values.

The study of Cruz, et al. ,(2001) titled Family Influences on the Lifestyle of Filipino Youth,

the filipino serves as a primary social group of adolescent is showing initial traces of stress.

Family values and the parental guidance continue to show significant influence in trying to

neutralize the effects of media and peers. A strong, stable and intact family environment of

the adolescents tends to diminish the impact of outside influences on the adolescent.

Figure 1. Research Paradigm

This study utilized the Input, Process, and Output (IPO) model. The input contains

the different ways in rearing a child . The process contains data gathering which is

conducting an interview, interpretation and data analysis. While the output contains shared

experiences or stories about the strategies on different ways on how parents raise their

children.

Research Methodology

This study is a qualitative type of research:

According to De Franzo, S. (2011). Qualitative Reaserch is primarily exploratory

research that use to gain an understanding of underlying reasons, opinions and motivations.

As stated by Labaree, R. (2009). The word qualitative implies emphasis on the qualities

of entities on processes and meanings that are not experimentally examined or measured at

in terms of quantity, amount, intensity or frequency.

Berk, M. and Michalak, E. (2015). Said that Qualitative research studies typically seek to

answer questions about the 'what', 'how' and 'why' of phenomena. This is in contrast to the

question of 'how many' or ' how much' that are sought to be answered by quantitative

research, including epidemiologic studies and clinic trials.

Phenomenological Research

In addition, this study is a phenomenology.

According to Cresswell (2013). Phenomenology isa an approach to qualitative research

that focuses on the commonality of a lived experience within a particular group. The

fundamental goal of the approach is to arrive at a description of the nature of the particular

phenomenon.

Standford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (2013). Phenomenology is the study of structures

of conciousness as experienced from the first point of view. The central structure of an

experience is its intentionality, its being directed towards something.

Kerns, D. (2014) said that phenomenological study explored lived experiences of

financial services industry change managers to understand the genesis of low data

management information system project adoption rates.

Participants of the Study

This study involves five (5) parents and children from Pulo Elementary School. The

researchers assumed that they will help them to gather some informations about the said

topic. The researcher chose parents to identify what kind of attitude and beliefs they

influence to their children and how it can affect to their lives. Also the researcher chose

children because in this generation, the researchers wants to know what are their experineces

in lives if they adopt the beliefs and attitudes of their parents.

Purposive Sampling

The researchers chose the purposive sampling to determine the respondents.

According to Crossman, A. (2018). A purposive sampling is a non-probability sample

that is not selected based on characteristics of a population and objective of the study.

As stated by Foley, B. (2018). Purposive sampling is a sampling technique in which

researchers relies on his or her own judgment when choosing members of population to

participate in the study.

Lavratas, P. (2009). A purposive sample is also referred to as a judgmental or expert

sample, is a ttype of non-probability sample. The main objective of a purposive sample is to

produce a sample that can be logically assumed to be representative of the population.

Instrumental of the Study

The main data gathering instrument used in this study was an interview questionnaire. It

contains the different stories and experiences of the participants including the parents and

the children.
Data Gathering

The researchers made a survey questionnaires based on the statement of the problem.

After making the questions, the researchers passed the questionnaire to be approved by the

two (2) English Instructors. The researchers consulted it the first english instructor to check

the questionnaires that the researchers made and the other english instructor corrected the

proper alignment, grammars and polished it. The researchers evaluated and remake the

questionnaires to be validated by the instructors.

The researchers went to Pulo Elementary School and seek some respondents which are

the five (5) parents and five (5) students. The researchers asked for permission to the

respondents if they ade willing to take an interview. The researchers recorded and list down

all the informations that they get from the respondents. Lastly, the researchers interpreted

and analyze the data gathering.

Research Locale

This study was conducted in Pulo Elementary School. It is located at Cabuyao, Pulo

National Highway beside Pulo Senior High School. It is owned by the Government and it

offers primary education starting fron kindergarten to Grade 6. The researchers chose this

location because they observed that every morning the students are guided by their parents

all the way to school, every noon in their lunch break, parents are always helping their

children to eat and share with them. The researchers thinks that this location has a potential

to help them gather information because some parents and children are connected to the

topic.
