After 10 minutes

Okay, time is up. Go back to your

seats according to your group number.
Now, prepare the group representatives
for reporting. Let’s start with group 1.

b. Analysis

Are there any questions regarding the topic

class? None sir

Okay, to add more information about our

topic this afternoon, let’s review your work.

Group 1:
Q1: What happens to the volume of
the syringe as the set of weights is added
on top of it?
Ans: The volume will decrease because of
the additional pressure on the gases inside
so it will move closer to each other causing the
volume to decrease.
Q2: What happens to the pressure on the
Syringe when the set of weights is added?
Ans: The pressure increases when the set
of weights are added.
Group 2:
Q1: Describe the graph
Ans:

Pressure

V 2V 4V
Volume

We observed that as the pressure was

successively halved, the volume doubled. As the
pressure reduced the volume increased.

Q2: What is the relationship between volume

and pressure of gases at constant tempera-
ture?
Ans: Boyle’s law is a gas law, stating that the
pressure and volume of a gas have an inverse
relationship, when temperature is held constant.

Am I clear class? Yes sir

The relationship between the volume and pressure

of gases at constant temperature was first stated by
Robert Boyle during the 16th century.
Gas Particles have very weak intermolecular force
of attraction, hence they move as far as possible from
each other. They have tendency to occupy all the spaces
they are contained in. If the pressure is increased, the
volume will be decreased forcing the gas particles to
move closer to one another.
The observation can be expressed in the Boyle’s
Law equation:

1
V𝛼 at constant T and n
P
The volume of a gas is inversely proportional to
its pressure, if temperature and amount of a gas are
held constant.

Let’s take a look at the equation again and try

to change the proportionality sign 𝛼 with the equal
sign (=).
k
V= Thus, k=VP
P
The product of Pressure and Volume is constant.

I have here Data on Volume-Pressure Relationship

Trial Volume (L) Pressure (P) VxP

1 2.0 10.0 20
2 4.0 5.00 20
3 8.0 2.50 20
4 16.0 1.25 20

Let us apply the equation you learned about Boyle’s

Law. Since volume and pressure of the gas can be varied,
let P1 and V1 be the initial pressure and volume respectively
and P2 and V2 be the final pressure and volume respectively.

According to Boyle’s Law, PV=k therefore:

V1P2=k
V2P2=k then V1P2= V2P2

Am I understood class? Yes sir

Let’s try to solve this one:

The inflated balloon that slipped from the hand of

Renn has a volume of 0.50 L at sea level (1.0 atm)
and it reached a height of approximately 8km where
the atmospheric pressure is approximately 0.33 atm.
assuming that the temperature is constant, compute
for the volume of the balloon

Initial Conditions Final Conditions

V1=0.50L V2=?
P1=1.0atm P2=0.33atm

V1P1= V2P2
V2= V1 P1/ P2

V2= (0.50L)(1.0atm) = 1.5 L

(0.33atm)

Do you have the same answer class? Yes Sir!

Excellent!

c. Abstraction

Okay class, to fully understand our topic

this day, I have here some questions and you
can raise your right hand to answer. First, What
is the relationship between volume and pressure
of gases at constant temperature?
Yes Marco? When the
pressure and
volume of a gas
have an inverse
relationship,
when temperature
is held constant.

Very Good! Can state the Boyle’s law formula?

Yes Lawrence? V1P1= V2P2

Very Good!
Are there any further questions? None so far

d. Application

Class, at this time I want you to stand and

we will have our activity.
Okay, I want you take a deep breath then
hold on… count 1 to 5 and then breath out.
Students’
demonstration
Take your seats.
Now, the question is why your chest expanded
as you inhaled and why did it contrast when
you exhaled?

Because when the

diaphragm contracts
as you exhale, it
results to a decrease
in the lung volume,
increasing the
pressure inside the
chest cavity and
causing air to flow
out of the lungs.
Very Good! That’s Boyle’s law in actions.

So, are there any clarifications? None Sir!

IV. Evaluation

Directions: In your 1/2 sheet of paper, solve the following problem.

1. A scuba diver needs a diving tank in order to provide breathing gas

while he is underwater. How much pressure is need for 6.00 liters of gas
at 1.01 atmospheric pressure to be compressed in a 3.00 liter cylinder?

2. A sample of fluorine gas occupies a volume of 500 mL at 760 torr.

Given that the temperature remains the same. Calculate the pressure
required to reduce its volume by 1/3.

V. Assignment

Directions: On your Science notebook, research about Charles’ Law.
