TEACHERS DAY which were held at schools

in the Mylapore neighbourhood.

CELEBRATONS 1 & 2 - Rosary Matric Girls Hr. Secondary School

organised a morning of formal and informal events.
Teachers were greeted with flowers and senior students
entertained them at the school auditorium.
3 - The management of Srinivasa Gandhi Nilayam
chose to honour resource people who train women in
various life skills here. Maya Narasimhan, a senior

the residence of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, former president
of India and in whose name Teachers Day is celebrated.
They garlanded a bust of the great man and offered
their respects. This place stands on Dr. Radhakrishnan
Road, close to Children’s Garden School.
5 & 6 - This was a morning for students to entertain
their teachers. And so it was at St. Raphael’s Girls School
campus in San Thome. This school is located on
Kutchery Road.

Mylapore police are investigating a robbery that took place
on Sept.4 at the house of Murugan on V. C. Garden 2nd Street,
off St, Mary’s Road.
Cash to the value of over one lakh rupees and gold jewels
and costly saris were stolen. The family was away on a
pilgrimage to Tirupathi when the robbery took place.
Local residents got to know of the crime on Thursday
morning and alerted the police.

GIRI FINE ARTS LAUNCH

Giri Fine Arts’ (GFA) inaugural function is scheduled to coincide
with Vinayagar Chaturthi. The event includes invocations and bhajans
by Nava Gana Bhajana Mandali and a Carnatic vocal concert.
Vidwan P. S. Narayanaswamy, dance exponent Nandini Ramani,
and Ramhji are the guests of honour.
The late TVS Giri as well as his wife, late Lakshmi Giri, were
connoisseurs of Indian art and culture. GFA has been named after its
founder and the inaugural event is open to all.

M. Shanbagavalli (87), wife of

away on July 14. She leaves behind
her son Dr. M. Muralidharan,
retired professor of RKM
Vivekananda College, and her
daughter Padma Seshadri ( of LIC).
She was kind, compassionate
and spontaneously came forward to
help the poor and needy, her family
said. She was of generous mind and liberal sentiment and
had donated a substantial amount to Ramakrishna Mission
and T. T. Devasthanam.

is today.

REMEMBERING WRITER DEVAN
Devan Endowments celebrates Devan, the wellknown
writer. The Devan Memorial Medal has been awarded many
a writer, illustrator, cartoonist, playwright and theatre artist

have been decorated

Teacher award by
the state
government. They
are Sister Irudhaya
Mary and Sister
Gnanaselvam.

Sister Irudhaya
Mary, Headmistress
of St. Lazarus
Middle School in
R. A. Puram is one of
the recipients of the
Tamil Nadu state
Best Teacher award.
She receved the award at the state event held in
the city on Septenber 5 evening.
A teacher now for 28 years, this nun who belongs
to the congregation of the Sisters of Bon Secours
says that her big challenge at her current
assignment has been to ensure that students who
were shifted out of the city post-tsunami and now
live in the Kannagi Nagar suburb continue to
attend classes.
“Our school has hired vans to transport these
kids, some 300 of them so that they do not drop out
of school since they feel secure studying here
despite the displacement, “ says the nun who hails
from Puducherry and took her first vows in 1977
when she became a nun.
Sister Mary was recognized during her stint in
Bangalore when the school in Ashok Nagar there
was chosen for the Best School award and she got
the Best Teacher award.
“Managing the kids who were first generation
learners and who came from very poor and broken
families was a
challenge there,”
says the nun.
“Counselling really
helped.”

1992 and this is her
second stint at St
Lazarus School,
Madha Church
Road,
Mandavelipakkam.

Every year, S. Rangarajan, a resident of D’Silva Road,

Mylapore and a small group undertake a pilgrimage to
Tirupathi. And all of them walk it to the hill shrine.

NEW BIRYANI RESTAURANT

AT ALWARPET
The latest biryani food joint in town comes from
a Bangalore-based chain. TTK Road has this new,
colourful red and yellow colour schemed 24-seater
restaurant called Ammi’s Biryani.
Partner Syed Ghani says the specialities are
of three varieties - Hyderabadi special dum
biryani, Virundhu (popularly called ‘shaadi’
biryani) as well as Zeera Samba.
He says the biryani is light on oil, and does
not contain any artificial colouring or flavour
enhancers.
The takeaway/delivery box is a cardboard
carton with sections - a bone tray, biryani
tray, and cup-sized portions for
accompaniments such as raitha, brinjal
salan, and a sweet (khoya made with
saffron in semi-solid form). Home delivery
is offered within a 4 km radius of the restaurant’s
location and will be launched soon.
Packs are categorised based on kilo sizes, combos, and family size.
They serve the same quantity of biryani in an individual order and a
combo order, unlike most other exclusive biryani outlets, says Shabeer,
restaurant manager.
The starters are mostly chicken and mutton based varieties and the
sole vegetarian starter is made with potatoes, carrots, baby corn and peas.
Prices range from Rs. 30 to Rs. 80 for starters, and Rs. 125 up to Rs. 1000
for biryani.
The dine-in facility is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
