SUBJECT: Mathematics GRADE : 9 DATE 26/08/19 – 30/08/19
UNIT/TOPIC Chapter 12 Herons Formula
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
To enable students:
• To calculate Area of a triangle whose sides are given, using Herons formula
• To calculate Area of a Quadrilateral whose sides and one diagonal are given, using Herons formula

SUB TOPIC
• Introduction to polygons namely triangles and quadrilaterals.
•Area of triangles – by Herons Formula
•Application of Herons Formula in finding areas of Quadrilaterals.
TEACHING METHODOLOGY.
Day 1: Teacher recapitulates the previous knowledge of students about finding areas of triangle and
quadrilaterals like rectangles, square trapeziums etc by using the respective formulae. She/he then introduces
the great Egyptian mathematician Heron and his derivation of the famous formula for finding the area of a
triangle in terms of its three sides.

Teacher gives and explains the formula that a,b,c are the three given sides of any triangle and s is half the
perimeter or semi perimeter of the triangle, in the formula. She tells that Herons formula can be used in the
situation when the height of a triangle is not known or is difficult to find. Teacher solves few examples using
the formula.

Day 2: Explanation- of Questions from real life situations and Ex. 12.1
CW: Q1,2,3
HW: Q 4,5,6

Day 3: Explanation- of Application of Herons formula to find areas of Quadrilaterals by dividing them into
two triangles with the help of their diagonals. Teacher gives more sums of real life situations like finding the
area of a farmers field taking the examples from text book on page 203, 204 & 205. .
CW Ex 12.2 Q1, 2,3
HW 4,5,6

Day 4: STEM:REAL LIFE APPLICTION OF HERON’S FORMULA:

Q : A kite in the shape of a square with a diagonal 32 cm and isosceles triangle of base 8 cm and sides 6 cm
each is to be made of three different shades. How much paper of each shade has been used in it
Continuation of Ex. 12.2 along with extra sums from the reference book. (R D Sharma)
HW: Ex. Q 8,9

Day 5: Class test on the chapter.

LEARNER ENGAGEMENT
► Students try to understand the new method of finding area of a triangle by herons formula and solves sums
based on the same.
► Students solve Ex 12.1 and 12.2.
► Students solve extra questions
► Students perform an activity of finding the area of a Kite & trapezium using herons formula. .

Types of Sums :
Q1.Find the cost of laying grass in a triangular field whose sides are 50m, 65m and 65m at the cost of Rs.7/-
per square m.
Q2. Find the area of a parallelogram whose adjacent sides are 60m and 40m.One of the diagonals is 80 m .

CLOSURE
 Students solve extra sums given from NCERT exemplar and Xam idea books
 Test on the chapter &
