III. Procedures
A. Introductory Activities
● Drill
How is the genetic code passed from parents to offspring?
● Review
What sex-influenced trait?
● Checking of Assignment
What is DNA? What are the components of a DNA molecule?
B. Developmental Activities
● Motivation
What made up DNA?
● Unlocking of Terms
 DNA- contains the information needed to form and control the physical
make-up and chemical processes of an organisms
 Nucleotide- is composed of the following: sugar and phosphate
molecules, and nitrogenous bases. The base can either be adenine,
guanine, thymine and cytosine.
● Lesson Presentation
Our lesson for today is about DNA
2. Activity Proper
Activity Objectives
 Identify the components of DNA
 Construct a model of a molecule of DNA
Refer to LM Unit 1 Module 2 Activity 6 pp. 20-21 (DNA Modeling)
3. Post Activity
1. Group Presentation
Group 1 Making DNA Model
Group 2 Reporting about the activity
Group 3 Research & Report about the DNA (ICT Presentation)
Group 4 & 5 Making Song and Poem
2. Check the answers of the guide questions
Answer to the guide questions:
Q32. What are the common parts of nucleotide?
Answer: sugar and phosphate
Q33. What is the one part of the nucleotide that differs among the other different
nucleotides?
Answer: base
Q34. List the different kinds of nitrogen bases.
Answer: adenine, thymine, cytosine, guanine
Q35. What is the pairing arrangement of the nitrogenous bases?
Answer: adenine pairs with thymine; cytosine pairs with guanine
Q36. Are there always going to be an equal number of adenine and thymine
nucleotides in a molecule? Why?
Answer: Yes, because adenine can only pair with thymine because of their
chemical structures
Q37. Are there always going to be an equal number of guanine and cytosine
nucleotides in a molecule? Why?
Answer: Yes, because guanine can only pair with cytosine because of their
chemical structures
Q38. The sides of the ladder are made up of alternating __________and ______
molecules. The steps (or rungs) of the ladder are made up of_____ held together
by hydrogen bonds
Answer: sugar, phosphate, nitrogen bases
3. Discussion of the results
4. Teacher discuss further the content
KEY CONCEPTS:
DNA is composed of chains of nucleotides built on a sugar and phosphate backbone
wrapped around each other in the form of a double helix. The backbone supports four bases:
guanine, cytosine, adenine, and thymine. Guanine and cytosine are complementary, always
appearing opposite each other on the helix, as are adenine and thymine. This is critical in the
reproduction of the genetic material, as it allows a strand to divide and copy itself, since it
only needs half of the material in the helix to duplicate successfully.
C. Abstraction
Therefore, what made up DNA?
D. Application
What is the importance of DNA?
IV. Evaluation
Multiple Choice: Read and understand the questions carefully and write the letter of your
answer.
1. What is the DNA base sequence of an eagle if it has a base in the other strand of
GACTACCGC?
a. CAT-GAU-CGC c. CAC-AUC-CGC
b. CTG-ATG-GCG d. CAG-UAC-CGC
2. It is a double-stranded helix made up of repeating units of nucleotides.
a. gene c. chromosome
b. DNA d. ribosome
3. What nitrogenous base that is complementary with guanine?
a. adenine c. thymine
b. cytosine d. none of the above
4. What are the common parts of nucleotide?
a. sugar c. sugar and phosphate
b. phosphate d. base
5. What nitrogenous base that is complementary with adenine?
