Significance of the Project

The structural concrete members especially beams shall designed to have

adequate stiffness to limit deflections, which may adversely affect the strength or

serviceability of the structure at working loads. Therefore, suitable control on deflection

is essential.

Suitable control on deflection is very essential for the following reasons:

1. Excessive sagging of principal structural members is not only unsightly, but at

times, also renders the floor unsuitable for the intended use.

2. Excessive deflections are likely to cause damage to finishes, partitions and

associated structures.

3. Large deflections under dynamic effects and under the influence of variable loads

may cause discomfort to the users.

Deflections on pre-stressed concrete members are influenced by several factors

such as self-weight, imposed loads, magnitude of pre-stressing force, modulus of

elasticity of concrete and span of the member.

Because of various factors influencing deflections of pre-stressed beams, the

programmer will create summarized and organized software that would provide a fast

and easier analysis and computations on all deflections. The software will also show the

deflection diagram of pre-stressed beam. This software will provide ease to solve and

display all deflections and the net deflection for every given pre-stressed beam.
Objectives of the Project

- Compute deflections due to self-weight, imposed loads and pre-stressing force

with ease and in faster way.

- Illustrate a diagram of deflection of pre-stressed beam.

- Calculate the net deflection of the pre-stressed beam easily.

Scope of the Project

This project is focusing only on computing and illustrating the deflections of

simply-supported prestressed beams. The computations on deflections are limited only

on due to self-weight, imposed loads and prestressing force.

On calculating deflections due to imposed loads, the program will compute only

the concentrated and uniformly distributed loads imposed on the pre-stressed beam.

On calculating deflections due to pre-stressing force, the program will compute

all cable profiles or tendons which are located with eccentricities towards the soffit of

beam to counteract the sagging bending moments due to transverse loads. Since the

bending moment at every section is the product of pre-stressing force and eccentricity,

the tendon profile itself will represent the shape of bending moment diagram. The

program will calculate the deflections of these following tendon profiles:

- Straight tendons

- Trapezoidal tendons

- Parabolic tendons (central anchors)

- Parabolic tendons (eccentric anchors)

- Sloping tendons

Expected Output

It is expected that this project can create a program that will easily calculate the

deflections due to self-weight, imposed loads and pre-stressing force in every

conditions. This program will show the deflection diagram of the pre-stressed beam.

After calculating deflections from the major factors, the net deflection of the pre-stressed

beam will be identified.
