The ACI 318-05: Art.7.3 -10.9, Eq. (D-15, 16 etc.) is used for pedestal column design.

According to code, a Pedestal Column shall be designed as follows:

Minimum percentage of steel for Pedestal Column as per ACI: 1-8% of Gross Area of Column
General percentage of steel for Pedestal Column as per Me: 1.25%
Design of Anchor Rod & four checks shall be performed:
Design of Anchor Rod
Tension Capacity of One Anchor, ØPnt = Ø x Aseff. x fu.t
Shear Capacity of One Anchor, ØVn = 0.80 x 0.60 x Aseff. x fu.t
Finally, use the maximum number of bolts/rods governed from the above two equations.

Design Checks
1. The pullout strength
2. The bearing check
3. Check for Side-face blow-out
4. Check for load transfer at base of column

A. The pullout strength

Pp = Ø x 8 x Anba x f’c, where Anba is the net bearing area of the anchor head
(assume a minimum anchor rod head in case of missing information say Ø20mm
anchor rods)
Pp shall be greater than the upward pull/tension force (-)
B. The bearing check
𝑃
Pedestal Column Required Area, A2 = 0.175 𝑥 𝑓′𝑐 , where, P = DL + LL
[Check this as additional, if the steel designer provides the required area]
𝑃
Base Plate Required Area, A1 = 0.7 𝑥 𝑓′𝑐 , where, P = DL + LL

[Check this as additional, if the steel designer provides the required area]

𝐴2
Fb = 0.35 x f’c x √𝐴1

Aactual/provided.1 = b1 x h1 ≥ A1 [SabbiR, you had it since you’ve a size in hand]

Aactual/provided.2 = b2 x h2 ≥ A2 [SabbiR, you had it since you’ve a size in hand]
When, A1 < A2, then check: Aactual/provided.1 x FP ≥ P, where, P = DL + LL

C. Check for Side-face blow-out (shear force)

C1 = heff./3 of the proposed pedestal, where heff. = Length of the anchor rod on
C1 side
C2 = heff./3 of the proposed pedestal, where heff. = Length of the anchor rod on
C2 side
6 x d0 ≤ Minimum of C1 & C2, where, d0 = diameter of the anchor rod
D. Check for load transfer at base of column
D.1. Vertical Rebar Requirement for Downward Compressive Force
Compressive Strength of the Column, ØPn = (0.85 x f’c x Ac + As x fy)
If downward force, Pu ≤ ØPn, then theoretically no reinforcement is required, but a minimum of 4- Ø16mm ( ≥ 0.001 x
Acol) shall be provided as per code.
If downward force, Pu ≥ ØPn, then theoretically reinforcement is required, shall be determined as follows:
𝑃𝑛.𝑎
Nos. of Rebar = Ø 𝑥 𝑓𝑦 𝑥 𝐴𝑠𝑏 [These Rebar Area Shall be ≥ 0.001 x Acol ]

Where,
Pn.a = Force per Anchor Bolt/Rod Provided
Asb = Area of Anchor Bolt/Rod
fy = Yield Strength of Anchor Bolt/Rod

D.2. Development Length of the Vertical Bars in Addition to Anchor Rods/Bolts

𝑓𝑦
ℓd = 25√𝑓′𝑐 ≥ 12 in.

The above formula is valid for using 20mmØ vertical rebars, maximally, i.e., for, vertical bar diameter ≤ Ø20mm

The footing design is easy as you’ve SBC by the office, so you can calculate the moment from face of the column &
provide rebar as required. Please check in hand the thickness and minimum rebar requirement.
