Module 3: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.6-8.

Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains
related to history/social studies.

1. Intro Video
a. This video will introduce the skill/ standard listed above. I will make these videos with a
simple screen cast. The video will give a rational for the skill and a brief overview of what
students will experience and will be able to accomplish by the end of the module.
2. Resources
a. This section will include a variety of resources that provide background information for the
skill in the module. These resources will be a combination of readings, videos or ppts like
resources that teach/inform the student on the skill.

iii. Link to video about reading for context clues
3. Discussion
a. The discussion board will be a place for students to post some initial thoughts about the
resources. Students will be advised to interact with the resources before posting as the
much of the information will be new. Students need to make an initial post by Wednesday
and respond to two other classmates by Friday night. The goal of the discussion post is to
force interaction with the resources and critical thinking. Week 3: What are context clues?
How can they help you understand the meaning of words or phrases you are not familiar
with? Why is vocabulary in the area of social studies an important part of being a
historian?
4. Activity/Practice
a. The activity/practice section will be the first opportunity for the students to exercise the skill
in question and receive some feedback from me. The activity may be a document with a
series of practice items
i. Context Clues In History Practice
5. Assignment/Assessment
a. Students will take the canvas quiz the covers the key components of this reading for context
clues to understand vocabulary. The Quiz is a combination of multiple choice, short answer,
and essay and can be found in the canvas module. The assessment includes passages similar
to the practice listed above.

Write arguments focused on discipline-specific content. (Make a claim and support it)

1. Intro Video

write an effective argument? How can you better convince people to join your side of the
argument?

a. The activity/practice section will be the first opportunity for the students to exercise the skill
in question and receive some feedback from me. The activity may be a document with a
series of practice items or a quiz in canvas.
i. Students will read three different passages and make a claim about each one.
Students will then supply one piece of evidence to support their claim from the
reading.
5. Assignment/Assessment
a. Students will take the canvas quiz the covers the key components of this module. The quiz
will focus on the parts of an argument, making a claim, and the CER model. The Quiz is a
combination of multiple choice, short answer, and essay and can be found in the canvas
module. The assessment includes passages similar to the practice listed above.

Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms effectively; assess the
credibility and accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding
plagiarism and following a standard format for citation.

a source is reliable? Why do you need information from multiple/ multiple types of
sources to properly source your writing?

in question and receive some feedback from me. The activity may be a document with a
series of practice items
i. Reliable source practice (students choose which source is the most reliable and give
a rational)
5. Assignment/Assessment
a. Students will take the canvas quiz the covers the key components of this module. The quiz
will focus on identifying reliable sources, the difference between quoting and paraphrasing,
and ways to avoid plagiarism. The Quiz is a combination of multiple choice, short answer,
and essay and can be found in the canvas module. The assessment includes passages similar
to the practice listed above.
