Lift Cylinder - Isolation and Drift Check

SMCS - 5102-535-D9 ; 5102-587-D9

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the
engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is
not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.

Make sure all of the work tools have been lowered to the ground, and
the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil
filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool
enough to touch with your bare hand.

Personal injury or death can result from sudden movement of the lift
cylinders or the tilt cylinders. Do not stand under the work tool when
you are testing or adjusting the lift cylinders or the tilt cylinders.

Do not stand under the lift arms when you are testing or adjusting the
lift cylinders or the tilt cylinders.

NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers

before opening any compartment or disassembling any component

containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool

Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on
Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Note: The distances that are listed for drift in the tables are for a new machine.

Introduction
This test will help determine the source of a drift in the lift circuit.

This test will help to determine whether any of the following components are the source of a drift problem: lift
cylinder, implement valve, ball valve (manual lower) and ride control valve.

If there is internal leakage in the lift cylinder, hydraulic oil will flow out of the rod end of the lift cylinder. If the
drift is caused by internal leakage of the implement valve, no oil will flow out of the lift cylinder rod end.

1P-3704 Rectangular Seal 1

Test Preparation
1. Park the machine on a smooth, level surface. Ensure that the work tool is not loaded by material.

2. Move the transmission direction control switch to the NEUTRAL position.

3. Engage the parking brake.

4. Place the steering frame lock in the LOCKED position.

5. Start the engine. Warm the hydraulic oil to normal operating temperature of approximately 54 to 70°C
(129 to 158°F).

6. Turn the engine start switch to the OFF position.

Test Procedure

Manual lowering ball valve

1. Ensure that the ball valve (manual lower) is in the CLOSED position.

Note: The ball valve is located in the front frame near the articulation hitch.

2. Move the lift cylinder in and out for five repetitions in order to make sure that there is oil in the lift
cylinder.

3. Lower the work tool to the ground.

4. Stop the engine.

5. Make sure that the hydraulic oil pressure is relieved from the hydraulic system by completing the
procedure that is specified in the Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure -
Release" for the machine that is being serviced.

Hose (2) for Rod End of the Left Lift Cylinder

6. Install blocking plate (A) at hose connections (1) and (2) for the rod end of the lift cylinders.

7. Place the hoses from the rod end of each lift cylinder into a suitable container.

Note: Use a suitable container that has a capacity of at least 19 L (5 US gal).

8. Start the engine.

9. Slowly raise the work tool approximately 0.3 m (1 ft) above the ground. Return the control lever to the
Hold position.

Note: The rod ends of the lift cylinders are open. Hydraulic oil will flow from the hoses as you raise the
work tool.

10. Monitor both of the lift circuit hoses.

If an excessive quantity of oil is flowing from a hose, the lift cylinder has an internal leak. Inspect the lift
cylinder for a scored cylinder or worn piston seals.

If the oil that is flowing from the hose is not excessive and the drift rate exceeds the specifications, the
cause of the drift is in the main control valve group or the ride control valve (if equipped). Isolate the ride
control valve (if equipped) from the lift circuit.

Reference: For additional information about performing a drift test on the ride control valve, refer to
Testing and Adjusting, "Ride Control Valve - Isolation and Drift Check" for the machine that is being
serviced.

If the lift circuit continues to have excessive drift during isolation of the ride control valve (if equipped),
the probable cause is an internal leak in the main control valve group.

11. Stop the engine.

12. When the engine has stopped, turn the engine start switch to the ON position. Lower the work tool to the
ground.

13. Turn the engine start switch to the OFF position.

14. Release any hydraulic oil pressure that is in the system.

Reference: Refer to the Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure - Release" for
the machine that is being serviced.

15. Remove the covers and the seals from the hose connections. Reconnect the hoses.

16. Refill the hydraulic oil, as needed. Run the machine and check the machine for any leaks.
