FOREWORD
Nearly 35 years ago, in October of 1981, I stood before a sym-
phony orchestra at Pinebrook Studios in Indiana to begin recording The
Day He Wore My Crown, but let me go back. A lot happened to get to
that moment.
35 years ago, I thought of myself more as an arranger and orches-
trator than a composer. I had this idea to take the top 12 songs concern-
ing the Passion story and create a new musical with them. The list
ranged from “Cornerstone” to “Behold the Lamb” to “There’s Some-
thing Different About Him.” I presented my idea to the president of The
Benson Company and was shocked by his response, “Absolutely not!
David, musicals are created by one writer: Bill Gaither, John W. Peter-
son, Joe Parks. Not 12 writers. It just won’t hold together. Bad idea…
sorry!”
Of course, I went back to my apartment, took three days and
wrote it anyway. When I asked if I could play it for him on the piano he
said, “It’s a waste of time, but go ahead.” I did. He sang. He smiled. He
cried.
The original closing song was actually “We Shall Behold Him.”
He asked me to replace it with “Crown Him with Many Crowns.”
When I asked why, he said it was because it ties in better with the
theme song, “The Day He Wore My Crown.” Okay, I get that, but “We
Shall Behold Him” is huge! He said, “I know, and that’s why it’s the
name of your next Easter musical. I can’t give away all my best songs
in one project!” And thus, the world of musicals was changed.
Right before working on this musical, I arranged and recorded
“The Day He Wore My Crown” for the debut album of a new unknown
singer by the name of Sandi Patty. It was to be released on Singspira-
tion Records. Yes, do you remember Singspiration? Or even remember
records? I loved the song and will never forget the chorus:
I’m the one to blame.
I caused all His pain.
He gave Himself, the day He wore my crown.
It’s been an honor and privilege to serve our Lord and Savior to-
gether with you in ministry over the last 35 years.
Continuing in His service together,
