I. Find the solution set.

 x+y x−y 26
+ =
1. x−y x+y 5
 xy = 6
r r
3x + 1 x−3 1
2. − =
x−3 3x + 1 2

II. Find the value/s of k such that

1. the lines 6kx − 5x − 3y + 2 = 0 and 3kx − y − k + 1 = 0 are perpendicular. For each value of k, find
the points of intersection and sketch the graphs.
2. the roots of the quadratic equation x2 − 2kx + k 2 − 1 = 0 are both less than 4 but greater than −2.

III. Answer the following problems completely.

p 2x − 1
1. Given f (x) = |x| − 3 and g(x) = , find f ◦ g and its domain.
x−3
2. Find the equation of the line tangent to the circle x2 + y 2 − 2x + 2y = 0 at the point (0, −2).
3. A man has $1600 dollars to invest. Part of it at 8% per annum and the rest at 12% per annum. How
much should he invest at each to realize an income of 9% of his investment per year?
4. A bus company offers excursion package for $10 per person. During summer, they offered a discount of

is $9.98, if 102 will join, the price per person is $9.96, and so on...). The company will also shoulder
the $3 per person fixed cost for the entire trip.

(a) Give the price function p(x), cost function C(x) and the profit function P (x), where x is the
number of clients joining the trip.
(b) How many clients must the company target to join the trip so that their profit is maximized?
(c) Suppose 400 agreed to join the trip, shall the company offer the discount? Justify your answer.
