Internal evaluation – I learn smart start grade 3- students book

Textbooks play a very important role for the success of teaching and learning.
Textbooks provide educational text, which can be used as source of the material.
Since English is an optional subject in Primary Schols, there have been a lot of
English textbooks. In this paper, I focus on I learn smart start grade3 – a perfect book
for students.

Skill presentation in the materials


The main purpose of the EFL teaching is the development of the four skills: listening,
speaking, reading and writing. If these four skills addressed equally while learning
English, the learners can be assured of having good communication. About this book,
there is an effective balance of skills. In other word, there is a level appropriate mix
of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing tasks to systematically develop student
abilities.
There are 8 main themes and each of them includes 6 lessons. The specific structure
of each topic is that:
Lesson 01 to lesson 04: Designed in a standard structure to help teachers prepare
lessons more conveniently and students absorb and remember lessons better. Each
lesson will have 5 parts: Vocabulary - Picture story - Song - Practice - Activity, game.
Lesson 05: Training 4 skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The lesson
focuses on cultural content and moral values that help students communicate about
everyday life in an English-speaking environment.
Lesson 06: Review all knowledge of the theme through exercises, songs, and games
designed according to the Cambridge Young Learner English Test model.
Grading and sequencing of material
I-Learn Smart Start is an English course consisting of 5 levels for elementary students
aged 6-11 years. Before I learn smart start grade 3 students learned I learn my phonic
1 and I learn my phonic 2; after this book students will continue to learn I learn smart
start grade 4 and 5 books. The lessons are continuous and adherent to the curriculum
framework of the Ministry of Education and Training and at the same time expanding
the actual content with the Vietnamese class. Especially, the contents of this book are
also organized scientifically and logically from easy to difficult levels, from simple to
complex.

Theme 7: Places and Directions
Theme 8: Weather
In addition, the format of the lessons is friendly, clear, consistent and logical. It
makes lessons easy to prepare, teach and understand. The previous knowledge is the
foundation of the following. For example, students learn vocabulary in the first part;
Apply those vocabulary in the next sections through many activities with specific
grammatical topics; when students have acquired the vocabulary and speech acts
switched to practice on 4 specific skills; and finally, review again to remember the
knowledge.
Relationship of tests and exercises
Through exercises in each lessons and two final semester tests, students are familiar
with the types of questions commonly asked in international exams such as
Cambridge Young Learner or TOEFL Primary. Namely:

Assessing the ability of students to apply the knowledge and skills they have learned
to solve communication situations instead of assessing and ranking among learners.
- Context of evaluation
The context of the assessment is always linked to the learning content and learning
context throughout the learning process, not just after each lesson or topic per
semester.
- Content of evaluation
The knowledge, skills and learning attitudes of students.
- Tools of evaluation
Tasks, exercises, tests in practical situations and specific time.
- Time of evaluation
Evaluate every time of the teaching process, focusing on evaluation while learning.
Opportunities for different learning styles, including self-study
This is a perfect coursebook that effectively combines different learning styles,
such as visual , aural, verbal, physical, social , solitary .....
With a total of 35 minutes for each lesson, in addition to providing knowledge, it also
facilitates students to participate in the lesson in a positive way, not only through
vivid images, games, catchy songs and chants but also opportunity for children to
study in groups, pair, move in class, interact with teachers. All these activities are
designed to help children develop different skills required by their age.
Outside of class time, students can also consolidate their learned knowledge through
online tutorials that they are granted accounts to log in to and do well-designed
exercises in workbooks.
Motivation to use the coursebook by both teacher and learner
Not only bring the benefits of effective learning for students, the system of
