TITLE OF THE THESIS: FACTORS AFFECTING THE READING


ABILITY OF SELECTED GRADE FIVE PUPILS
AS PERCEIVED BY THE TEACHERS OF
MACALELON CENTRAL ELEMENTARY
SCHOOL S.Y.2018-2019

This study aimed to find out the factors affecting the reading ability as

perceived by the of Macalelon Central Elementary School Sy:2018-2019. Specifically

this sought to answer the following questions; (1) What is the demographic profile of the

respondents in terms of (a) sex (b) years in service (2) What are the factors affecting the

reading ability as perceived by the teachers in terms of; (a) teacher factors (b) parental

factors (c) pupil factors; (3) What implication could be derived from this study?

This study was conducted on January 2019. The researcher used descriptive

method of research in finding out the factors affecting the reading ability as perceived by

the teachers of Macalelon Central Elementary School Sy:2018-2019. The questionnaire

was the main instrument used in this study. It was supplemented by informal interview

and observations.

The findings were as follows 1. Out of 30 selected teachers, most of the teacher

respondents are female with 23 (or 76.67% ) respondents while the remaining 7 (or

23.33% ) respondents is male. The most of the respondents according to their no. of

years in service are in the bracket of 21-25 years with 9 respondents or 30% of the total

respondents.

In the light of the data revealed in this study, the following concludes were

hereby drawn Based on the problems presented and the results from instruments, the

following summary of findings was hereby arrived in terms of demographic profile of

the respondents. The teacher respondents are 12 (or 40% ) are female and 18 (or 60% )

are male among 30 selected teachers in Macalelon Central Elementary School SY: 2018

-2019. The factors affecting the reading ability in terms of (a) teacher factors the average

weighted mean computed is 4.23 which is qualitatively described as “Strongly Agree”.

Most respondents agreed in “Teachers use reading materials in her classroom” and

“Teachers use textbooks in one-on-one reading comprehension in each pupil” with the

mean of 5.00 interpreted as “Strongly Agree” in terms of (b) parents factors the average

weighted mean computed is 4.29 interpreted as “Strongly Agree”. Most respondents

agreed in “Parents coordinate to the adviser about reading status of their child” with the

mean of 4.84 interpreted as “Strongly Agree” and in terms of (c) pupil factor most

respondents agreed in “Pupils catch their interest to read when information is new” with

the mean of 4.80 interpreted as “Strong Agree” with the average mean of 4.21

interpreted as “Strongly Agree”.

Based on the findings, the implications was; Teachers could be taught all

methods of teaching reading skills, various strategies and required steps of teaching

reading skills and apply them effectively in the teaching or reading. Teachers and

parents need to work jointly in following up the pupils in term of their reading skills and

helping them to practice in reading and identify the needs of the pupils and provide

some materials to them. Devices localize and contextualize reading materials, text and

selection in order to connect the application of real setting with that of the reading

proficiency of the pupils. Ensure the participation of the parents and community in

uplifting the reading proficiency of the students. Parents may be encouraged to tutor

their children especially in reading. Regularly monitor the reading proficiency of the

students and develop reward system for pupils who have achieved the highest

percentage of reading proficiency acquisition at the end of every reading remediation

program.
