Culture Notes
(1) In China over half of the domestic transportation is undertaken by the railroad system,
but highways, most of which have been built since 1990, are becoming increasingly important. Now
China ranks next only to the United States in total highway mileage.
(2) The Chinese celebrate two New Years, New Year on the international calendar and the
traditional Chinese New Year on the lunar calendar, which usually falls in late January or early
February. The most common New Year greetings are “新年好” (xìnnián hâo) and “新年快樂” (xìnnián
kuãilë), which can be used for both New Years, but for the Chinese New Year many people prefer the
traditional greeting: 恭喜發財 (gòngxî fàcái), which can be translated as “May you be happy and
prosperous!”
