Why exercise is important?

Start:
Come into free choice time 30-45 minutes

Ask them what they think exercise is? Ask them – “do you want to be big and strong?”
Show pictures of different activities and ask them what one they think is exercise
Jumping rope, painting, reading a book (hopefully they get it wrong)

Heart:
Explain how exercise makes your heart (muscle) strong - “strong heart lets you
run fast”
“lots of exercise you do makes more than 1 muscle stronger at the same time”
Mimic an exercise:
Pinecone can only do 5 hops in 10 seconds – “Do you think you can do more
than 5 hops in 10 seconds?”
Stop
Place hand over heart – can you feel your heart beating fast?
No then more/ yes then new exercise

Legs: train
Ask them what exercise will make their legs strong?
Ask them – “do you want to have big and strong legs?”
Explain how exercise makes your leg (muscle) strong - “strong legs lets you walk
long”
Mimic an exercise:
Get in two lines (Kayla one/ Me one) and create line and we will walk while
pretending to be a train for 5 minutes
Stop
Place hand over heart – can you feel your heart beating fast?
No then more /yes then new exercise

Arms: Airplane
Ask them what exercise will make their legs strong?
Ask them “do you want to have big and strong arms so you can throw a ball?”
Explain how exercise makes your arm (muscle) strong - “strong arms lets you
throw a ball, climb monkey bars, and high five”
Mimic an exercise:
Get in circle and play the airplane song while pretending to be an airplane
Stop
Place hand over heart – can you feel your heart beating fast?
No then more/ yes then new exercise
Body: Boat
Ask them what exercise will make their body strong?
Ask them “do you want to have big and strong bodies?”
Explain how exercise makes your arm (muscle) strong - “strong bodies lets you
be active”
Mimic an exercise:
Get in circle and play the row your boat song:
Partner up. Sit facing each other and hold hands. Rock back and forth and
sing the song "Row, row, row your boat." while singing the song
Stop
Place hand over heart – can you feel your heart beating fast?
No then more/ yes then new exercise

Have them demonstrate their favorite exercise


Jumping, Running, Walking, Jumping jacks, hopping, skipping, marching

Stretching and Deep breathing


Arms and legs
Deep breathing – put your hand on your belly and take a big breath in, breathe in
through your nose, out through your mouth

End:

Ask them if they think exercise is fun by using the happiness 3-point scale

Ask them what they think exercise is, NOW?


Show pictures of different activities and ask them what one they think is exercise

they got it wrong the first time)
Time to Color:
What can you do with your Heart?

Color in the heart on their body sheet
What can you do with your legs?
- Run
Color in the legs on their body sheet

Color in the arms on their body sheet
What can you do with your body?
- Everything
Color in the body on their body sheet

When their body sheet is colored in and full, then they get a sticker

Back up plan:
Dance to any other transportation songs – wheels on the bus?
Me and Kayla make a bridge and have them crawl under like a car would go under the
bridge
Imitate animal’s movements: walk like a penguin, hop like a frog, etc.
Visual schedule – rip off number 1
