LIFE ACCORDING TO ZODWA WABANTU: BY FUNDISWA NKWANYANA

Tough times don’t last. Love or hate her, this prominent celebrity has carved out a
successful career for herself. Zodwa Wabantu gets paid to show off her sexy dance
moves, and is loved ad celebrated for being unapologetically herself. “I’m proud of
the life that I have created for myself despite having a tough childhood,” she says.
The death of her mother when she was 11 changed her life forever because she was
ill-treated by the people that she trusted. “I was forced to hustle, and I was exposed
to the good and bad sides of township life from a young age. That was hard on me,”
she recalls. At 16, she got tired of being mistreated by her relatives, who would make
her do chores until late at night. She moved out of her Soweto home and went to live
with friends while finding her feet. In 2014, the debt collecting company she was
working for offered her a chance to move to its branch in Durban. Her life then took
an interesting turn. The move changed her life, and the tough times came to an end.

Let the good times roll. Zodwa Wabantu’s traumatic childhood left her feeling
broken and empty. And in an effort to heal and forget about her problems, she
frequented clubs and parties in Umlazi where she had fun socialising, drinking and
dancing. “I met people who wanted more from life at these parties, and that inspired
me to do the same,” she says. In 2016, a video of her dancing at Eyadini Lounge
went viral on social media, resulting in her gaining popularity. “Eyadini will always
have a special place in my heart beacause that is where my career as an entertainer
started.” She danced her way into many people’s hearts. That resulted in getting
booked for MC gigs and to dance at concerts and clubs.

Township life. Although Zodwa Wabantu now lives in Malvern, a suburb in Durban,
she spends a lot of time in Umlazi with friends. She is also a supporter of the local
business. “I get my hair washed in a small container salon and buy groceries at the
Umlazi plaza,” she says proudly. The relentless spirit of township residents also
motivates her. “I’m inspired by their entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to do what
it takes to put bread on the table.” Crime is a harsh reality in townships, and she
hopes that the community will focus on loving and supporting each other instead.

Lesson learnt. Zodwa Wabantu has used her knowledge about township life to
entertain people and carve out a successful career. “Township life taught me to
figure things out, hustle and use what you can to be successful.”

TEXT C

Discipline your child the right way

Teaching discipline is challenging, and correcting a child angrily might have a long-
term negative impact on them. You need to match your discipline strategy with your
child’s age. Using one approach throughout the different development stages will not
work.

Between the ages of 1 – 5 your child is starting to distinguish between right and
wrong, and they will push boundaries to see how you will react. Praise and reward
good behaviour to discourage bad behaviour.

Disobediences and tantrums are common at this stage and part of their growth.
Listen to your child’s concerns, and show empathy before reprimanding them
because they need to know that you understand how they feel. At this stage, your
child does not fully understand most rules. Speak simple terms.

From 6 – 12 years, children are likely to talk back when getting reprimanded. Remain
calm, and don’t yell or embarrass them in front of others. Teach consequences, and
if your child does something wrong, let them deal with the repercussions as soon as
it happens.

Take away privileges or items that they value, but don’t cut them off or isolate them
completely. You can take away their electronics or limit time spent with friends.

6
Lastly, pick your battles because not everything is worth your time and energy.

Eastern Cape, the provinsial education department managed to pay a company
R250 000 for an old shipping container.

Noxolo Lugayeni, the chairperson of the SGB at Upper Mvenyane Senior Primary
Schoolin Cedarville, near kokstad, said a representative from the company
outconnect arrived in the middle of the night to deliver a rusty shipping container to
be used as a mobile kitchen, and spray-painted it.

“I was there when they painted the container at around 23pm. The principal, who only
saw it in the next day, could not believe it when we told her that these people spray-
painted it the previous night. It had a lot of rust, especially outside. You could see it
was not a new container. One then wonder why it is so expensive,” Lugayeni said.
