The story was in Havana, Cuba and tells that an old man of the sea who
lived alone for many years, did not have much luck in fishing. His
beloved wife had died years ago. In the town they talked about El Viejo,
instead of his name. At his advanced age, he was no longer as
successful in his fishing as in other times. Beside him, a boy Manolo,
whom the old man had become a fisherman from a very young age. The
string of failures of Santiago already extended to 84 days and his
reputation as a fisherman was so bad that the parents of the boy forbade
him to continue fishing with him, after the first 40 days without fruit with
the old man. Manolo, was always with Santiago despite his setbacks,
but only as moral support and food, Manolo was embarked with other
fishermen of greater luck. The bond between them was very strong, as
they shared successful fishing adventures in the past. on day 85,
Santiago thought that his bad luck would have to end and even though
he wanted to travel with him, neither the child's parents nor the old man
would allow it. Then Santiago goes to sea very early like every day,
tired, hungry and without as much strength as in his best days in search
of a better luck, in contrast to the rest of the fishing settlers who left with
better streak. Already in the sea, Santiago did the usual, prepare the
bait, speak alone, then, he was not accompanied and from a very young
age he had learned to speak in this way and in silence. Having no
company, he was convinced that no one would bother, so talking was
easier. In an instant of noon, a fish stung in the bait and Santiago
hurriedly took the thread to wait for the opportune moment of capture.
He waited with the patience of the most experienced fishermen and at
the precise moment, pulled the thread to cause a mortal wound to the
fish. To his surprise, this fish had no intention of surrendering easily and
instead of facilitating his work, he started a battle for life by pulling the
thread while Santiago did not allow him to escape. Santiago felt that this
effort was not usual, but urged by a victory he made himself swear that
he would pursue him beyond any frontier, farther from where anyone
had ever come. The hours passed and Santiago had no idea what he
was facing, the only thing he knew was that he was moving further and
further away from the coast while that fish was pulling the thread. Night
would fall and Santiago would not have the happiness of knowing who
his rival was, as he passed the time, he would respect his gallantry. In
the middle of the darkness, Santiago began to feel fear and resorted to
his most valuable memories, his victories, his wife, the little manolo
whom he missed and felt that he should have been with him to help him,
but he immediately rejected that idea because, in the end of accounts I
knew I was alone.
it grew to such an extent that Santiago, who was not a very religious
man, made promises to the Creator by reciting 10 Our Father and 10
Hail Marys. The tension grew much more and then he promised 100 Our
Father and 100 Hail Marys, only that he would recite them at the return
of the trip in view that he was too exhausted to recite them. One of his
hands was broken and he was angry with her, however, he tried to cure
her in the salt water while maintaining his battle with the stubborn fish.
He had no food on board, instead he had a bottle of water and the stale
fish he used as bait, which would ultimately serve as food for himself. A
small bird was near the boat and he could see the fatigue he had. He did
not know for sure how long he had been flying but he soon found out
that this bird was experiencing many problems. Santiago told him to rest
in his boat for a while, but he had to fight on his own if he wanted to get
to his destination alive and saying this, felt a strong pull of the thread
and the bird left immediately. Finally the fish was observed and then
Santiago could see its size and beauty, a huge swordfish. Santiago
appreciated his beauty but was convinced that he had to kill him. The
fight would last 3 days and in the end Santiago would stay with the
victory, enjoyed the moment and constantly looked at him to be sure that
his size was real. He could not get into his boat due to its size and on his
way home, the sharks bite him everywhere. Santiago did not give up and
instead of accepting it, he wounded and killed them with his harpoon
until before losing it in the waters, in the same way he used a knife and
finally the tiller.
kill the swordfish envy since its size was almost a fact that must have
been many and Santiago for its part with the harpoon and its knife. He
arrived during the darkness to port without reward, with a lot of fish
bones tied to his boat and with morale on the ground, almost crawling he
came to his humble abode and lay down to sleep. In the morning, little
Manolo went to the house in Santiago as he did every day during his
absence and quickly noticed the suffering he suffered when he saw his
hands and day Santiago was for some food for the old man in the small
restaurant in the town where the owner of the place sent Manolo his
regrets to the old man of what had happened, but not before recognizing
that the fish should have re huge. The settlers were amazed at the
unusual size of the swordfish that Santiago faced and approached to
take some of it. Some tourists who saw the remains wondered what kind
of fish could be that and one of the unsuspecting villagers replied that a
shark, then admired a tourist lady and exclaimed did not know that the
sharks had such a beautiful tail. Manolo visited the old man and gave
him the usual encouragement only that this time he made the promise
that from that day he would fish with him no matter what his parents
said.
