Chapter 1

The Problem and Its Setting

Introduction

Students may be fully capable of earning high grades but might not care

enough about education exert the effort. The act of entertaining distractions will

affect the focus and concentration of a student. This means some trouble;

unsatisfied outcomes and undefined goals that will result to poor academic

performances. Academic performance plays a vital role in producing a better

outcome of a student as a great leader and a responsible mankind to the country.

According to the research in Shanghai, China, one of the problems of the

professors in China is to devise teaching methodologies that help all students to

learn and understand the subjects under discussion. High performing students

give opinions based on reading material and learning content. While the low

performing student’ remains silent this means that they do nothing at all nor read

their notes. The research provides the effect of study habits and study attitude to

the academic performance (Cerna & Pavliushchenko, 2015).

Based on the study Factors Affecting Academic Performance of Students

in Haryana, North India which stated that their academic efficiency is being

influenced by learning facilities, communication skills and proper guidance from

parents. The study analyzed the specific variables on academic performance

where as their academic achievements can be achieved by providing them with

productive facilities that could enhance their skills. Also, students can do well if

1
they are correctly guided by the teacher and by the parents (Malik, Singh, &

Singh, 2016).

Based on the study in Iligan City, Philippines academic performance can

be achieved by means of nutritional aspects of the student and living condition of

the parents to support their children. In Iligan City education was not prioritized

because of poverty and the distance between the school and the residences of

the student (Alcuizar, 2016).

According to the study entitled Factors Affecting The Academic

Performance of The Working Students in Polythecnic University of the

Philippines in Sta. Rosa, Laguna which deals to the factors that might influence

the academic performance of working students, whereby they hypothesized that

hours spent at work at a time away from studying may lead to lower grades and

less attractive post in college opportunities. This study also provides as the basis

to develop and to discover other factors that envisions in enhancing students

performance. Academic performance of the working students have attracted

increased attention among university teachers and students with the aim of

knowing and understanding the reasons, problems and other factors affecting

them. This may empower them for a lifelong learning to their journey to success

hindered by their busy schedule and always no time to their study and academic

performance (Arceo, Dunca, & Tena, 2013).

According to the study entitled Factors Affecting Study Habits on the

Academic Performance of Senior High School Students of Davao Doctors

2
College that academic performance is a range to which a student, teachers on

institution has achieved for educational goals. It is said to be reflected by the

grades of the students. And when a student gets a high grade, it is assumed that

one has learned a lot and if not, the student would most likely attained lesser

learning (Arieta, Gementiza, & Saco, 2017).

Academic performance is definitely a problem especially to Grade 10

students because most of the students at this point in time have a low time

management. More students like doing easy things. They are more likely

attracted to easy tasks. Learners likes to exert less effort and more students are

prone to gadgets that lead them to poor study habit.

In Grade 10 students of Doña Carmen Denia National High School, where

the researchers are enrolled, poor academic performance among Grade 10

students is very common and it is proved by the students’ report cards.

The problem mentioned above can be related to some factors such as

technology, gadgets, peer pressure, laziness and procrastination, study habits,

environmental factors, and proper time management of students.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship of time

management to the poor academic performance of the Grade 10 students of

Doña Carmen Denia National High School. It is hoped that this study could help

the students to become more active in their studies, thus, gives them a better

future.

3
Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this research is to determine the effects of time

management to the academic performance of the Grade 10 students of Doña

Carmen Denia National High School. It particularly seeks to answer the following

questions:

1. What is the level of time management of students in terms of:

1.1 Procrastination

1.2 Impatience or overlooking details

2. What is the level of academic performance of students in terms of:

2.1 Peer pressure

2.2 Lack of motivation

3. Is there a significant relationship between academic performance and

time management of students of Grade 10 students of Doña Carmen

Denia National High School?

Hypothesis

There is no significant relationship between time management and

academic performance of Grade 10 students.

4
Conceptual Framework

Independent Variable Dependent Variable

Time Management Academic Performance

 Procrastination  Peer pressure

 Impatience or  Lack of motivation
overlooking for success
details

Figure1. Conceptual Paradigm of the Study

In the figure, the conceptual paradigm of the study is presented. The

independent variable is the time management factor which includes the following

indicators. According to the study of University of California Santa Cruz entitled

Time Management and Procrastination (2016), procrastination refers to the direct

result of poor time management also caused by poor self-care. It is the dilation of

tasks given. Lack of motivation, perfectionism and disorganization are considered

as factors of procrastination.

According to the study entitled Factors Leading to Bad Time Management,

impatience or overlooking details is also considered as an indicator because if

someone is in a hurry to meet deadlines, he/she cannot ignore significant

aspects that might lead to unnecessary re-work that leads to loss of time (Nag,

2018).

5
The dependent variable is the academic performance with two indicators:

first is the peer pressure it refers to the influence of friends. Having some

negative influence friends might lead to cutting or ditching classes. That may

cause the poor academic performance of one student. And also having friends

who are inclined with using illegal drugs can also influence a students, this will

affect the student health. And having poor health affects the students' academic

performance (Sangle, 2015).

Academic performance is lack of motivation for success this means that

considering failure as motivation for success in life. Person experiencing failure

will enjoy the sweetness of success (Al-Zoubi & Bani, 2015).

Significance of the Study

The researchers believe that the result of the study will be beneficial to the

following groups of people that play a significant role in the fulfillment of the goals

of the students:

Students. The students will be benefit in this study because this study

focuses on the improvement of the learner by means of proper time

management. This research might lead the students to be a better individual and

make them motivated to continue studying and achieve their dreams.

6
Teachers. This study is beneficial to teachers for they will know the

capabilities of one’s individual. And to help the students improve their skills in

studying and doing one tasks.

Parents. The parents will benefit in this study because one of students’

motivation are their parents. They will lead their children to be better students.

And they are the ones that motivate their children.

Definition of Terms

The following terms are defined as used in the study:

Academic Performance. It refers to the students’ outcome in achieving

one task.

Time Management. This refers to proper using of time.
