Society has been successful in their plans of
taking a leadership role in rodeo in Western
Canada by successfully winning the bid to
host the 2019 Foothills Cowboy Association
(FCA) Cowboy Classic Finals.
This puts Strathmore on the map as a
leading town for hosting rodeo events and
for raising rodeo athletes.
The FCA Cowboy Classic Finals will
be held Sept. 13-15 at the Strathmore ag
grounds.
The FCA is a semi-pro rodeo association.
Rodeo athletes who want to compete in the
Canadian Professional Rodeo Association
(CPRA) get their start with the FCA before
being raised up to the CPRA circuit.
For a number of years, the FCA Finals
were held in Red Deer. This is the first year
the finals will be held outdoors instead of
in an indoor arena.
“I think that it’s a big step forward for
the Strathmore Agricultural Society … we
are very happy to welcome all these cow-
boys and cowgirls and rodeo athletes to
Strathmore and hope that we can show
them a wonderful experience here,” said
Ryan Schmidt, CEO of the Strathmore and
District Agricultural Society.
To qualify for the FCA Finals, athletes
have to compete in a minimum of 10 ro-
deos during the season with a minimum of
50 per cent of those, to a maximum of sev-
en, being FCA “mother” sanctioned rodeos.
The Top 10 athletes in the open division for
each event and the Top 6 in juniors get to
go to the FCA Finals.
The FCA Finals will bring to Strathmore
a lot of rodeo athletes, their families and
friends, and residents are welcome to at-
tend and watch the rodeo stars of the fu-
ture.
Schmidt noted that winning the bid to
host the finals is not only important for the Great hosts
ag society and for the town’s branding and
Nash Wassing and the rest of the Strathmore Reds U13 baseball team hosted the 2019 Western
reputation as the heart of rodeo in southern
Canada AA Minor Baseball Championship Aug. 16-18. The Reds hosted the top teams from

Local dog rescue a labour of love

When Kyla Janes and her husband
Michael took over Alpine View Pet Spa
almost two years ago, they didn’t plan
to incorporate a dog rescue into their
business.
But the fact that Janes had been find-
ing homes for dogs for about eight
years made it a natural progression.
“For some reason, people I knew
would just bring me dogs to be re-
homed,” said Janes, who added that she
found homes for about 10 dogs before
they even bought the boarding kennel.
“After we bought the business, clients
started asking if we were a rescue, too.
So we thought we might as well just
do it.”
Rescued Paws @ Alpine View opened
six months ago and has found homes
for four dogs so far.
“We rescue dogs from unfortunate
situations, like the death of an owner or
a family finding themselves with a dog
that’s much bigger than they’d expect-
ed,” explained Janes. “We’ll only take a
dog if it’s been a pet and has no major
health concerns.”
They’ve also partnered with the Ani-
mal Care Centre of Strathmore to ensure
their rescue dogs are in good health
when they’re ready to be adopted.
Socialization is a big part of the re-
habilitation process for the dogs Janes
takes in.
“We won’t take human-aggressive
dogs, and we work hard at getting our
dogs socialized so we can get them into
play groups,” said Janes.
At the moment, Rescued Paws is
home to two dogs that are available
for foster or adoption: a seven-year-old
Belgian Malinois named Django, and
Bucky, a two-year-old dachshund/re-
triever mix.
Unlike many rescues, Janes will only
keep a maximum of five rescue dogs
at one time. Finding a good home for
each dog is the most important thing,
and applicants undergo a thorough
screening process.
“We have to make sure we find a suit-
able home for our rescue dogs,” said
Janes. “A family can tick most of the
boxes, but if they don’t have a fenced
yard, we can’t place a dog with them.”
Volunteers and foster families play
a big role in helping the rescue dogs
reach their potential. An ideal foster
home would provide a dog with the ba-
sics of food and shelter, but also with
regular walks, lots of love, a fenced
yard and a genuine desire to help find
the dog a forever home.
“Our volunteers help out in any way
they can, but the best thing they can do
is give our rescue dogs the love and at-
tention they crave,” stressed Janes. “Our
dogs need human contact, they need to
be loved, and our volunteers spend a
lot of time playing with them and walk-
ing them.”
At the end of July, Strathmore’s Jim
Baxter contacted Rescued Paws and
adopted a two-year-old husky named
Mickey. Mickey’s transition was seam-
less, and he’s a perfect addition to Bax-
ter’s family.
“Kyla went above and beyond – way
beyond – to make sure I got a healthy
dog and that Mickey got a good, safe
home to go to,” he said.

Open Farm Days success

Hello Strathmore Times readers! I hope the rainy
weather has not kept you inside. Alberta Open
Farm Days was a huge success this year, and our
friends who make their living from the land are do-
ing a fabulous job in teaching us about everything
from seed to table, from new technology to special
new beer brews.
Strathmore’s own Origin Malting and Brewing
uses locally grown malting barley. Did you know
brewers from around the world buy Alberta malt-
ing barley because of its unsurpassed quality? Our
valued added agricultural industries are a huge
contributor to Alberta’s prosperity, and I hope you
had a chance to enjoy the hospitality of the hosts
at one of the many events. Their passion for what
they do, their concern for the environment, and
their desire to get the word out about the great
things happening in agriculture shines through.
There’s more to your municipal library than
books. The library connects you with your com-
munity and its history. On Aug. 24 you and your
family can participate in the Great Family Treasure
Hunt at Strathmore Municipal Library. Get ready
to work together to solve clues and maybe win a
great prize!
Political campaigns are generally about prom-
ises, platforms, ideas for change and ideology,
and hopefully something about the people that
are running resonates with the constituents. The
Prime Minister promised the country a new kind
of leadership, all the while bashing The Honour-
able Stephen Harper. It seems by “new” he means
breaking the rules with impunity, with a clear vio-
lation of the rules during the ongoing SNC-Lavalin
scandal. I have been away with my family in B.C.
for the last week, and I went door knocking with
some of the Federal CPC candidates in the Okana-
gan region. These folks are as frustrated as we are.
Justin Trudeau has not kept his promises, and he
admitted that he was fully responsible for the eth-
ics breach in the SNC-Lavalin case. Let’s be clear,
he lied to Parliament, and he lied to Canadians.
SNC-Lavalin asked him to pass a law that could
allow them to escape prosecution for criminal acts
and he happily buried it in a budget bill. He be-
lieves to this day that he was in his rights to do this
and that it was appropriate to do so. Let us hope
Canadians will not forget this, or how he tried to
destroy Jody Wilson-Raybould’s reputation, even
though she was right, as we go to the polls on Oct.
21, 2019. He tried to prevent the prosecution of
SNC-Lavalin for bribery and big payoffs, and again,
they lobbied him to do this. The Prime Minister
has now decided to try and bribe and pay off hard
working Canadians as well, with over $20 billion
in promised government spending as the debt and
deficit rise.
The most frustrating piece of all of this is that
there are no consequences for these breaches of
ethics, other than the votes of Canadians. I do not
see Mr. Trudeau acknowledging his failings and
stepping down suddenly in a whirlwind of apolo-
gies for trying to take advantage of the Canadian
people. We have to call into question the ethics of
a federal government that cares more for its own
re-election than the wellbeing of Canadians.
There is nothing to salvage the Prime Minister’s
handling of the SNC-Lavalin situation. He does not
believe that he did anything wrong. He does not
think he is accountable. I think you would agree
the Prime Minister does not get to conspire against
his own attorney general to the benefit of a com-
pany.
This was not about jobs; it was about doing fa-
vours for his friends in clear violation of the Con-
flict Of Interest Act. Those infrastructure jobs would
have been there no matter what, it just would not
have been SNC-Lavalin that got the bid to do the
job. Many other companies would have loved the
opportunity to take these projects and employ
thousands in the province of Quebec.

The stress of
back-to-school spending

Back-to-school season can be stress-
ful for students and families, and the
greatest stressor is often back-to-school
spending.
“This can be a financially stressful
time, especially for parents who are
trying to navigate the endless school
lists for clothes, supplies and electron-
ics, managing their children’s expecta-
tions, and aiming to stay on budget to
not break the bank,” stated the Credit
Counselling Society (CCS) in a prepared
statement.
In fact, the CCS said the stress of back-
to-school spending is a close second to
the financial stress of Christmastime.
CCS referred to a retailmenot.ca sur-
vey which says parents will spend a to-
tal of $507 for back-to-school spending.
The survey indicates 45 per cent of par-
ents plan to spend $100-$250 for cloth-
ing and accessories, and 19 per cent of
families plan to spend $250-$500 on
technology.
“We encourage parents to involve
their children in the back-to-school pro-
cess,” said Stacy Yanchuk Oleksy, CCS
director of education and community
awareness, in an email.
“By involving your children right at
the beginning of the process, letting
them do some work and make their
own decisions, you can minimize the
impact of peer and market pressure to
get the latest and greatest cool thing.”
Before making any purchases, Oleksy
suggested families talk about the fam-
ily budget, helping children and teens
understand what a budget is and the
importance of sticking to the budget so
the family can afford the things that are
most important.
Oleksy also suggested having chil-
dren and teens collect leftover supplies
from previous school years so they
know what they do and don’t need.
Older children and teens can also re-
search prices and products.
“There are many lessons that can
be taught while shopping for back-to-
school supplies,” she said, “including
needs versus wants, name brand versus
not, price-matching, researching prod-
ucts, quality versus quantity and even

Oleksy suggested parents find out ex-

If they must use credit, she said, “par-
ents should create a plan to have this
debt paid off within three months.”
And to prevent running into the same
problem again next year, Oleksy said,
“parents should calculate all back-to-
school costs for the family, divide that
number by (the number of) pay cheques
(they receive) per year, and with that
number, deposit it into a back-to-school
savings account for next year.”

agency, which can help them develop a

Last week the Alberta government
introduced members of its minimum
wage panel who will be tasked with
reviewing the labour market impact of
wage hikes over the last four years.
The panel chair is Joseph Marchand,
associate professor of economics at the
University of Alberta. Other panel mem-
bers include Anindya Sen, economics
professor at the University of Waterloo;
Mark von Schellwitz, vice-president of
Restaurants Canada (Western Canada);
Richard Truscott, VP Canadian Federa-
tion of Independent Business (CFIB)
for B.C. and Alberta; Jason Stanton,
owner, Running Room; Branko Culo,
owner, Express Employment and mem-
ber of Alberta Enterprise Group; Del-
phine Borger, server, Blink Restaurant,
Calgary; Rachel Donnelly, server, Chop
Steakhouse; and, Nicoly Lyckama, serv-

“By establishing this panel of ex-
perts, we are keeping another platform

West Nile virus infection.
“With exposure to mosquitoes comes
the risk of West Nile virus,” says Dr.
Christine Kennedy, Medical Officer of
Health, Calgary Zone. “Because some
mosquitoes carry West Nile virus, it’s
important to avoid being bitten at all.”
Whenever engaging in outdoor activi-
ties, or even just relaxing outside, all Al-
bertans should take these simple steps
to prevent bites and protect themselves
from West Nile virus, including wear-
ing a long-sleeved, light-coloured shirt,
pants and a hat; using an approved in-
sect repellant (e.g. products containing
DEET or Icaridin); and staying indoors
at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are
most active.
“These steps can make it harder for
mosquitoes to find you. And remember:
if mosquitoes can’t find you, they can’t

effect July 1, 2019 and will be followed

minister’s tour

Despite being touted as a
“provincewide tour,” Service
Alberta Minister Nate Glubish
won’t be making a stop in
the Chestermere-Strathmore
constituency during his tour
of Alberta communities.
In total, 37 communities
will be visited in nine days
by Glubish in what a gov-
ernment press release calls a
tour to meet with Albertans
and discuss “reducing obsta-
cles that affect their lives.”
Service Alberta is the min-
istry that oversees registries,
land titles and consumer pro-
tection regulations.
The tour, which started
this past Tuesday in Brooks,
wraps up on Sept. 4.
“This tour is the first of its
kind in more than five years,
and it demonstrates this gov-
ernment’s commitment to
hear, first-hand, the unique
concerns and proposals that
Albertans have on the issues
that affect them” Glubish
said.
“I have heard about spe-
cific challenges that Alberta
communities are facing, from
broadband service in rural
Alberta to local registries and
mobile home tenancy issues
in more urban settings. This
is why it is important to go
out and hear directly from

News Release
This September, Canadian Mental Health Associ-
ation (CMHA) Calgary Region, in partnership with
the Town of Strathmore and FCSS Strathmore, will
be facilitating an eight-week suicide bereavement
support group in Strathmore.
CMHA Calgary is looking forward to bringing
this group to Strathmore, to offer help and sup-
port to those in surrounding communities. This
group is meant for anyone who has lost someone
to suicide.
Topics that may be discussed in the eight-week
group include understanding the grief process,
family dynamics, forgiveness, exploring emo-
tion, preparing for the holidays and special occa-
sions, sharing our stories, and exploring meaning
through symbolization and analogy.
The group will begin Monday, Sept. 9 and run
until Nov. 4, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Strathmore
Civic Centre (130 Brent Blvd). Please note, there
will be no group on Oct. 14.

Suicide Loss Day.
We offer suicide bereavement counselling for in-
dividuals, families and couples to develop an en-
hanced understanding of their own wellness, and
receive coping strategies to stay well after the loss
of their loved one.
Our drop-in groups, which will run biweekly on
Thursdays (please check websites for actual dates
and times), are facilitated by CMHA counsellors,
and provide a confidential and safe space for indi-
viduals to share, network and meet others who can
understand and provide support.
On Nov. 16, we will be holding our annual Sur-
vivors of Suicide Loss Day – an international day
to build support and community for those left
behind. The full day event is for anyone (parent,
child, spouse/partner, aunt, uncle, cousin, niece,
nephew, friend or extended relationships) who
has lost someone to suicide to come together and
connect in a supportive environment.
The day features guest speakers, small group
discussions and activities. Throughout the year, we
also offer a condensed version of Survivors of Sui-
cide Loss Day, which features the same elements
on a smaller scale.

Playwright Libby Skala’s play, Lilia!,
about her relationship with her grand-
mother, actress Lilia Skala, is playing at
Rosebud Theatre until Aug. 31. Elinor
Holt plays grandmother Lilia and Cas-
sia Schmidt performs the role of Libby.
But since 2000, Libby Skala herself
has performed the original one-woman
show Lilia! about 350 times in North
America and Europe. Writing the play
and performing her roles has resulted
in her developing a deep understand-
ing of her grandmother and her re-
markable life.
Lilia Skala was the first female archi-
tect in Austria and was also a profes-
sional actress. When she and her family
fled to America during the Nazi regime,
Lilia’s first job was in a zipper factory,
but within two years, she was perform-
ing on Broadway. Over the next several
decades, Lilia Skala performed in nu-
merous Broadway, movie and television
roles. She was nominated for an Acad-
emy Award for her role in the movie
Lilies of the Field with Sidney Poitier.
She passed away in 1994.
About a year after her grandmother
died, Libby Skala attended an improvi-
sation workshop where she was chal-
lenged to perform the role of someone
inspiring, compelling or fascinating.
She performed the role of her grand-
mother working in that first humbling
job in the zipper factory. The workshop
instructor loved that performance and
encouraged Skala to develop the story
of her grandmother into a one-woman
play.
Over the next four years, Skala
worked with teacher-playwrights Gary
Austin and Carol Fox Prescott to devel-
op her memories of her grandmother
into a play.
“In those years of performing (my
grandmother) and walking in her shoes,
I’ve come to understand why she did
things and said things,” she said. “I’ve
come to appreciate her point of view,
and I’ve come to admire her even more,
I guess, and realize that everything she
said and everything she did was out of
love.
“In her day, love was expressed
through correcting someone and help-
ing them be better, improve themselves
and whatever that took to be tough.
They didn’t hug their children ever.
They didn’t say, ‘oh you’re so won-
derful.’ They didn’t compliment them.

was “full of excitement and anticipation
to see the show for the first time and to
fill the role of playwright watching her
own work.
“When (Rosebud Theatre’s managing
director Mark Lewandowski) proposed
licensing the play and having two ac-
tors do it, I was… I don’t know if the
right word is flattered that he would
find the script by itself worthy of pro-
ducing,” Skala said.
“I think of a script almost as a child.
You raise your child and at some point,
your child has to leave home. I wanted
to know whether the child could sur-
vive independently… whether there’s
enough substance in there for it to live
on without me.”

Strathmore held the prestigious AA Minor Western
Canada Baseball Championship on Aug. 16-18 with
games at the Kinsmen Park diamond, Strathmore ag
grounds diamond and the Fair Field Cheadle Lions
diamond.
The event was hosted by the Strathmore Reds and
included participating provincial winners from Brit-
ish Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba in
U13, U15 and U18 divisions.
This year’s westerns marked the first major baseball
event held in Strathmore in 30 years – since the com-
pletion of the ag diamonds where the Beaver National
Championships were hosted in 1989.
“It was an excellent, fantastic weekend. It’s a great
opportunity and showcased our facilities,” said Don
Anderson, tournament chairman.
Heavy rain on Friday resulted in delayed play until
the rain stopped and the diamonds were put back into
shape with the help of tournament volunteers.
Although none of the three Strathmore Reds teams
took home the gold, each team played well and had
some strong competitive games. The championship
was also a good opportunity to show off Strathmore’s
facilities and a good initializer to host future events.
With the Kinsmen Park diamond improvements
near completion and several local ball diamonds to
utilize, Strathmore could be a good candidate to host
any number of future amateur baseball events each
year, such as the Alberta Summer Games or Alberta’s
own provincial championships.
“Everything was very good; a big thank you to all
the volunteers at each of the venues, even with the
challenge of the rainstorm on Friday … people were
very pleased with how the tournament ran, the facili-
ties and everything. We had lots of good comments,”
said Anderson.

James was predeceased by his wife of 63 years,
Opal, infant son Greg, and siblings Fred (Nellie), Ernie
(Gwen), John (Lottie), George, Walter, Charlie Seifert,
Helen (Walter) Luhning, and Elsie (Jack) Sullivan.
Jim will be remembered by his children; Larry (Kita),
Mike (Carolyn), Alanna (Alvin) Hermanson, and Car-
olynn (Daryn) Knapp; twelve grandchildren: Calida,
Jasmine, Terry, Christianne, Nathan, Brittany, Russell,
Kay-Cee, Greg, Dylan, Brett and Kadon; great-grand-
children Drake, Veronika and Elias; and sisters-in-law
Beverly Van Dine, and Marilyn and Theresa Seifert.
Jim’s family would also like to say a special thank
you to the staff and residents of Meadowlark Senior
Care Home in Strathmore for caring for Jim, and wel-
coming “Hug-A-Bug” into their lives. Jim was laid
to rest beside Opal at the Cayley Cemetery on July
20. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on August
24, 2019 at the Strathmore Civic Centre, 120 Brent
Boulevard, Strathmore, AB at 3:00 pm. Condolences
