EXERSCI 101 – Semester 1, 2019

Assignment 1 (47 marks) = 7.5% of Your Course Mark

Due Date: 22nd March (Friday) by 11 pm (must be submitted to Canvas)
(50% ‘late submission penalty’ applies for submissions made within 24 hours
after the due date. Zero marks for submissions after that.)
N.B.: Merely writing the final answer to each question is not enough and will get zero marks! You MUST show
the workings/intermediate steps you took to arrive at the final answer.
(Where relevant, the correct unit of the final answer must be included; if not, 0.5 marks would be deducted.)

Simplify the following:

3
1. 2(4 − 32 ) − 8 + √125 + 23 + 2 2 marks (workings=1 mark; final answer=1mark)

2. 8 ÷ 2[8 − 3(5 − 2)] + 1 2 marks (workings=1 mark; final answer=1mark)

Expand and simplify the following:

3. −(𝑥𝑥 − 1)2 2 marks (workings=1 mark; final answer=1mark)

4. (𝑎𝑎 + 𝑏𝑏)(𝑎𝑎2 + 10𝑏𝑏) 2 marks (workings=1 mark; final answer=1mark)

Factor the following:

5. 20𝑥𝑥𝑥𝑥 − 4𝑦𝑦 2 2 marks (workings=1 mark; final answer=1mark)

6. 𝑥𝑥 3 𝑦𝑦 3 − 3𝑥𝑥 2 𝑦𝑦 2 + 5𝑥𝑥 4 𝑦𝑦 2 marks (workings=1 mark; final answer=1mark)

Solve and simplify where possible:

2 1 1
7. 𝑛𝑛 + 4 = 19𝑛𝑛 + 5 𝑛𝑛 + 2 marks (workings=1 mark; final answer=1mark)
5 2 4
8𝑥𝑥 2 −8𝑦𝑦 2
8. 2 marks (workings=1 mark; final answer=1mark)
12(𝑥𝑥−𝑦𝑦)

𝑎𝑎2 −𝑏𝑏2 𝑎𝑎+𝑏𝑏

9. ÷ 2 marks (workings=1 mark; final answer=1mark)
3𝑎𝑎2 𝑏𝑏2 12𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎

𝑏𝑏2 −81 𝑏𝑏2 −9

10. × 2 marks (workings=1 mark; final answer=1mark)
𝑏𝑏2 −3𝑏𝑏 𝑏𝑏2 +9𝑏𝑏
(𝑦𝑦 3 −𝑧𝑧 −2 )4
11. 2 marks (workings=1 mark; final answer=1mark)
(𝑦𝑦 −5 𝑧𝑧)−3

12. 8𝑥𝑥 64 𝑦𝑦 8 2 marks (workings=1 mark; final answer=1mark)

Identify the number of significant figures and write the following in scientific notation:
(2 marks per question)

13. As of 2 pm March 15th 2019, according to Stats NZ, population in NZ is estimated to

be: 4, 946, 746

14. On average, the estimated number of cells in an adult human body is:
37, 200, 000, 000, 000

15. Estimated mass of the average human cell is: 0.000000000001 kg

Perform these operations with the appropriate number of significant figures:
(1 mark per question)

16. 153.0 + 23.4578 – 2.789

17. 91.23 ÷ 0.0120

18. (3.4617 x 107) ÷ (5.61 x 10-4)

19. Assume that the surface area of a cell in the lungs that is exposed to air is
square-shaped. As a result of a prescription drug if the cell swells and its length
doubles, by what factor would its exposed surface area increase?
(Show your reasoning) (2 marks)

20. If the cell in the above question was cube-shaped, by what factor would its volume
increase when its length increases by a factor of two?
(Show your reasoning) (2 marks)
21. In an attempt to rip apart the safe-box where final exam papers are kept, four 101
students try to pull the box in 4 different directions (see fig. below). Find the total
force (resultant) being applied to the safe, and its angle clock-wise from the
positive side of x-axis. Please keep intermediate answers (total x and y
components) to 3 decimal places where possible (truncate the rest), and round the
final answer (magnitude and angle of the resultant) to two decimal places.
(10 marks)(0.5 marks deducted if the answers are not rounded.)

25 N
45° x

Marks breakdown:
Total x component (horizontal component): 3 marks (workings=2 marks; final answer=1mark)

Total y component (vertical component): 3 marks (workings=2 marks; final answer=1mark)

Magnitude of the resultant: 2 marks (workings=1 mark; final answer=1mark)

Angle of the resultant: 2 marks (workings=1 mark; final answer=1mark)
