3. Additional Tasks

3.1 Save Diagnostic Data (DDC)

At one point within the 6.x code stream and always in 7.x an additional data capture has been
implemented to get special data in case of specific unexpected reboots occur.
At the beginning it was a critical event and so also displayed in the Recovery Guru. Later they made
it informational but the message can still be found in the Major Event Log (MEL):
‘Diagnostic data is available’
We might ask to save this DDC data and this is done via a script command:
save storageSubsystem diagnosticData file=”C:\TEMP\ddcLogs.zip”;
You might have to adjust the path to your needs.

Executing script commands:

Go to the enterprise window (this is the one which lists all managed systems) and do a right click on
the system for which the command should be executed and chose ‘Execute script’
A new window opens, copy and paste the command in the upper field (don’t miss the semicolon at
the end)

Then best do ‘Verify Syntax’ first and if all OK use ‘Execute only’

3.2 Save Diagnostic Data Capture

This feature was introduced with the DCS3700 Performance Model and is as well available for
DCS3860, DCS3700 Gen 2 and DCS3860 Gen2.
If available Major Event Log (MEL) will show:
‘Diagnostic data capture has been captured’

We might ask to save this data and this is done via Graphical User Interface (GUI):
Monitor -> Health -> Storage Subsystem Diagnostic -> Diagnostic Data Capture -> Retrieve...
or via script command:
save storageSubsystem ddc file=”C:\TEMP\ddcLogs.zip”;

3.3 Automatically saved Support Data

Starting with 6.x code automatic data collection for critical events were introduced.
Even if not enabled by default at the beginning it is now enabled by default for a long time.

Default folder for this data collection is:

C:\Program Files (x86)\IBM_DS\client\data\monitor

Setting can be adjusted in the Storage Manager Enterprise Window:

Tools → Legacy Collect Support Data → Automatically....

3.4 Performance Problems

In case of a performance problem, please provide the answers to the following questions:
· Provide a detailed description of the performance problem and the business impact!
· Provide a description of the whole solution architecture
(Application - Server - SAN - Storage), application characteristics.
· Which volumes/ hosts show the performance problems? Please provide a description of the
logical and physical volume layout (vol. mapping server to storage)
· When was the first occurrence of the problem?
· What changed in the environment at that time?
· What is the typical occurrence of the problem during daily business hours?
· What facts do indicate that the performance problem is related to the storage subsystem?
· Does the customer require high IOPS or throughput (MB/s)?
· How and where does the customer measure performance? Please provide any available data
that shows the performance problem and reference data that shows good performance.
· What is the criteria for the problem to be considered as solved?

4. Data Transfer to IBM

Note: Upload all data to the IBM EcUREP Server.

Please read the file "Data Transfer to IBM.pdf" for more details.
