CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND IT’S BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

We all know that foreign media is highly recognized by us, Filipino especially

teenagers. We are captivated by the visuals , story lines and the actors and actresses. With the

variety of genre and themes , we Filipinos are surely fond of it. Foreign media or shows that are

commonly known to Filipinos are American t.v. series ,kdrama and anime , these three are

widely acknowledge not only by teenagers but also kids and adults. Throughout the years many

research have found out that a large scale of Filipinos are really getting into this kind of shows.

But most of the Filipino students are too fond of watching foreign shows , that’s why parents

and some of the adults think that watching these kind of shows affects the students in various

ways. But they only believe that except for entertainment, watching these kind of shows only

hinders the students in terms of their academic performance. So the question here is does this

kind of show truly affect the academic performance of the students?

Foreign shows such as animes, Korean noverlas, and American TV series became

very popular in the past few years. Korean novelas depicting unusual love stories that we can

only understand if we expand our way of thinking, Animes like One piece, Dragon Ball, My Hero

Academia and many more that boost our imaginations, and lastly, American TV series that

highly influence our modern day thinking.

In this research we researchers ,will assess or gather useful information from the

students particularly the STEM students of Arellano University and will test the validity of the

recent studies related to our research in a wider scope or topic for us to figure out the good and

bad impacts of watching this kind of shows to their academic performance. Aside from that, we

hope to prove that in watching this kind of shows will somehow help the students to perform

better in their academics performances.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY .

According to Common Wealth Magazine, one of the greatest inventions in the

20th century is television, and its appearance in every family has changed our traditional way of

life since decades ago. The sight of a family surrounding around a table and eating dinner is less

and less seen. Instead, we eat dinner and watch dramas in front of our TV sets at the same time.

This style has been showing up in our everyday life. Along with the large network of cable

television, TV stations introduce many foreign programs, including the dramas from Korea,

Japan and America, which became popular in Asia including Philippines . This concludes that

watching foreign programs became a part of our daily living or lifestyle. Meaning to say that

when these show are introduce it had a really big impact in our lives so we can say that it can

surely affect one’s academic performance in various ways. .

Is watching foreign language movies a waste of time?

The author, Benny lewis, Publishef this journal in 2018 state is his research that watching foreign

movies can benefit your language learning projects, but only if you study then. After reading

CHAPTER II

RELATED STUDIES AND LITERATURE

A Study On Anime and Its Impacts Among University Students

Anime is the Japanese animation. The largest influence on anime was

television. Most shows were for boys or both. In the twenty first century, anime changed
significantly and encompasses the breath of Malaysians lifestyle. This article examines the
impact of anime on university students’ behavior in an effort to provide the reader with an
understanding of anime, their social structures and the issues behind this popular cultural
product. The anime includes the anime's background, context, character design,
characterization and storyline organization aired on television. Hence, the objectives of this
research are to study the university students’ initial attitudes towards anime aired on
television, and to examine their acceptance on the anime character, characterization, and
storyline of anime aired on television. This study will analyze data from a survey of 247
university students in Malaysia. Findings disclosed that there is students’ attitudes towards
anime are more to the positive side and they are not too obsessed towards the anime
character.

Anime was kept for many years at the fringe of culture, as a genre
either too childish or too violent and pornographic (Sato. 2005). University students’
concerns with and connection to anime issues have largely been bypassed. The anime
programs around the world are increasingly that students are also the important audience
for their services. The university students’ perception and behavior on anime affect society’s
perception and behavior. This was a result, among other factors, of the need of certain
groups, mainly youths, to demonstrate their critical perspectives regarding the scientific and
cultural models and to have voice in society.

The author, not mentioned, conducted this study to highlight the effects of
anime in the behavior of the students. In this study, the author found out that the students
reflection are more to the positive side and they are not too obsessed towards the anime they
watch. Furthermore, he/she explained that anime can have a good or bad effect and that will
depend on the student/watcher because not all anime are student-friendly some were violent
or pornographic.
The Effects of Korean Dramas on the Students

According to CommonWealth Magazine, one of the greatest inventions in the

20th century is television, and its appearance in every family has changed our traditional way of
life since decades ago. The sight of a family surrounding around a table and eating dinner is less
and less seen. Instead, we eat dinner and watch dramas in front of our TV sets at the same time.
This style has been showing up in our everyday life. Along with the large network of cable
television, TV stations introduce many foreign programs, including the dramas from Korea,
Japan and America, among which Korean dramas are one of the most popular programs in
Taiwan, even in Asia. We call this trend “Korean Wave”. Korean Wave is a phenomenon which
refers to a worldwide popularity boom in Korean cultural exports. Korean Wave stands for
Korean dramas and movies, combined with a mixture of K-pop music and dance, clothing,
foods, customs, sightseeing, cosmetics and Korean language. Without a doubt, Korean Wave
has formed an immense fashionable power in the world. According to The AJU Business (2012),
everyone knows that Korean Wave consists of various elements, and the impact of Korean
dramas is the most obvious. There are two dramas playing significant roles in the history of
Korean dramas. One is Jewel in the Palace.

According to Wikipedia, this drama made the record of average ratings of fifty
percent; moreover, there were more than ninety countries in the world airing this drama. The
other is You Who Came From the Stars, and this drama not only created the clicks of two billion
on the Net, but also drew over six hundred forty thousand Taiwanese tourists to go to Korea in
2014, according to Cheng Yi Shou (鄭 益守), President of Korea Tourism Organization, Taipei
Office. Therefore, we can know that Korean dramas are closely related to our life, whether their
clothing, foods or cultures.

In this study, the author, not mentioned, emphasize the term "Korean Wave"
which means the era of Korean Pop and Korean Dramas. He then explained that without a
doubt, the Korean culture really spreads among the other countries. Other than that, he
explained that it really has an effect on the watchers' (mostly students or teens) perspective.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter covers the methods and the procedures of the conducted study. Specifically, it sets the
framework of the methods used in the research, the respondents of the study, data gathering process
and procedures, and the statistical application used.

Method of Research Used

The study will use a descriptive method with the survey form and supplementary kinds of instruments
such as surveying to give a deep and complex analysis of the Impact of watching foreign shows to the
academic performance of the grade 12 STEM students of Arellano University – Elisa Esguerra Campus.

Descriptive research refers to the type of research question, design, and data analysis that will be
applied to a given topic. Descriptive statistics tell what is, while inferential statistics try to determine
cause and effect.

Descriptive research can be either quantitative or qualitative. It can involve collections of quantitative
information that can be tabulated along a continuum in numerical form, such as scores on a test or the
number of times a person chooses to use a-certain feature of a multimedia program, or it can describe
categories of information such as gender or patterns of interaction when using technology in a group
situation. Descriptive research involves gathering data that describe events and then organizes,
tabulates, depicts, and describes the data collection (Glass & Hopkins, 1984).

Population and Sampling

To efficiently develop results about the Impact of watching foreign shows to the academic performance
of the Grade 12 STEM students of Arellano University – Elisa Esguerra Campus, purposeful sampling
technique has been used.

Purposeful sampling is a technique generally used for qualitative research. This technique
involves identifying and selecting individuals that are acquainted to the topic of interest in a limited time
and resource. The chosen individuals are the STEM students that are greatly affected by the impact of
foreign shows.
The respondents are consist of 30 Grade 12 Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics students
of Arellano University-Malabon.

In conducting the study, data gathering technique is used to get a more valid and efficient results. We
used survey questionnaire as our tool in data gathering.

The survey questionnaire is made up of the following parts:

1. Demographic profile of the respondents

2. General information about the respondents in relation to watching foreign shows
3. The possible positive and negative effect of watching foreign show.

Research Design

To accomplish the objectives of the study, the researchers have used survey
questionnaire, interview and observation to gather the necessary data.

Components of the Research Design:

Likert Scale

In measuring the response of the respondents of the survey, the Likert Scale is used. The Likert
scale or frequency scales used fixed choice response formats and are designed to measure
attitudes or opinions (Bowling, 1997; Burns, & Grove, 1997). These ordinal scales measure levels
of agreement. A Likert-type scale assumes that the strength/intensity is linear, i.e. on a
continuum from strongly agree to strongly disagree, and makes the assumption that attitudes
can be measured. Based on Sam McLeod of the Simply Psychology website, he said that “Likert”
scale is used to allow the individual to express how much they agree or disagree with a
particular statement”.

The range used for the verbal interpretation is as follows:

Rate Verbal Interpretation Range
4 - Strongly agree 3.5 - 4.0
3 - Agree 2.5 - 3.49
2 - Disagree 1.5 - 2.49
1 - Strongly Disagree 1.0 - 1.49

Weighted Mean
Weighted mean will be used in finding the average score of the responses.
Frequency and Percentage
The calculation of the principal quantity has been utilized to determine the most
probable scenario. The formula of percentage is as follows:
F
P = ---------
N
Where P = Percentage
F = Frequency
N = number of population
