ABSTRACT
The present study is to find out the effects of seed burial in sterilized and unsterilized
mud at varying depths on the germination of japanese palm (A. macarthurii Becc.). The
study was using a 2x4 factorial experiment arranged in completely randomized design
with mud sterilization : sterilized and unsterilized, as the first factor. The second factor
was the depth of burial 5, 10, 15, or 20 cm with buried lasted for eight days. Seed were
then germinated on sterilized sand medium and watered daily with tap water.
Germination on untreated seeds served as a check. pH and humidity of mud
measurements were perfomed at the end of the treatment. At the germination
experiments, measured parameters were germination rate and seedling growth. Data
colleted were subjected to analysis of variance and Duncan’s Multiple Range Test at
95% significance level. The result showed that seed burial in the mud improved
germination percentage, the rate of seed germination, and subsequent seedling growth.
Sterilization of mud had no effect on seed germination and seedling growth. Depth of
seed burial significantly affected the percentage and and the rate of seed germination.
Twenty centimeter mud burial gave the best result compared to the other ones. The
higher germination percentage and the rate of germination of mud buried seeds might
be attributed to the anaerobic condition.
