 The Remarkable
Teddie-Joy Remhild
Ability Anyware Digital Quarterly was
saddened to find out that Teddie-Joy
Remhild passed away recently. Ms.
Remhild was a blind mother, former
program director, educator, disability
rights activist, prodigious writer, and
motivational speaker for the disability
community. She had a great sense
of enthusiasm, positive outlook on life,
and profound determination in
advocating on behalf of individuals
with disabilities. With her superb
communication and needs
assessment skills, she effectively
addressed the concerns and resource
deprivation in the disability
community. Her name appeared
frequently in numerous records of
disability commission meetings and
disability rights publications. For more
information about Mrs. Remhild and

Council of the Blind.
Teddie-Joy served more than 40 years in the
disability advocacy field. She will be deeply
missed. We thank her for being such a terrific
mentor, compassionate soul, and extraordinary
human being.

The AADQ family expresses its deep

sadness with the recent passing of
#SweetSophia, a beautiful young lady
with a contagiously warm and vibrant
spirit, who shared her appreciation for
the truly meaningful experiences in life.
Sophia lived with "facial, hand and foot
deformities, and numerous disabilities."
Her mother, Natalie Weaver, advocates
to protect healthcare for children with
complex medical conditions, and
founded the nonprofit organization,
Sophia's Voice.

disabilities." They "believe unconditional
love, respect and support can create a
more accepting, kind and inclusive
world."

Lexington School for the Deaf, a 4201

School founded in 1864, is one of the
largest, leading academic entities for
Deaf and hard of hearing students in the
U.SA. Lexington offers a rich curriculum
with individualized accommodations,
access to assistive technology, and
extracurricular activities including sports.
Lexington also offers American Sign
Language (ASL) classes for Deaf students'
family members to learn how to
communicate effectively in ASL.

Introducing Sayaka さやか Tsukishiro 月城

Hello, everyone, I am Sayaka Tsukishiro. I am 5
years old. Tomorrow, I will be starting
kindergarten. I am very nervous about what my
classmates will think about me when they see me.
I hope they don’t point at me and start calling me
names. I am blind, need to use a guide cane,
and have to wear a cloth around my eyes.
My uncle is my mom’s younger brother, Hajime
Yamazaki. I would often visit his shop after school
to see him working on is robots. When I grow up, I
want to be just like him, making my own robots.
One day, I visited my Uncle Hajime’s shop, as
usual, to see what he was up to; he was busy and
concentrating, as I expected. I wasn’t wearing
any safety goggles on my eyes and got a little too
close to what Uncle Hajime was working on.
Because of that, the last thing I was able to see
was bright orange sparks flying right into my eyes.
It was a very painful injury that burned my eyes.
Uncle Hajime called the ambulance immediately.
I was rushed to the hospital. The doctors were
able to treat my injury, but unable to save my
eyesight.
Since my accident, life hasn’t been easy for me.
I’ve been teased a lot by the neighborhood kids
about my looks. They kept calling me things like
"ugly", "ogre", and "witch". One boy even yanked
the cloth over my eyes off and tried to steal my
guide cane.
I am very scared that my new classmates will
treat me the same way, calling me names and
stealing my stuff. I hear, though, that the school
near my house is one that takes in kids with
special needs. I am excited, because I know that
there will be more people like me. I can’t wait!

the sparse amount of information available on

Digital Literacy
What is digital literacy? How can one
acquire it? When do we need it? Digital
literacy is the ability to understand/use
digital devices and interpret digital
content.
Digital literacy is required on a daily basis
for tasks such as communication, work
related activities, school assignments,
shopping, travel, recreation. Digital literacy
can fill a communication gap for individuals
with physical challenges speaking or
articulating words.
Digitability provides specialized training/
lessons to help adolescents develop
their digital literacy, life and work-ready
skills. They have different modules
understanding the Internet, safety, daily
activities, education, and professional
development, and financial literacy.
UCLA, a Pathway of Study for Students with
Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
UCLA Extension offers a variety of courses for
adults with diverse interests. This includes
Pathway, a specialized curriculum for students
with intellectual and developmental
disabilities. "Pathway at UCLA Extension is a
two-year certificate program for students with
intellectual and other developmental
disabilities, offering a blend of educational,
social, and vocational experiences, taught
and supervised by experienced

instructors sensitive to the individual needs of
our students. On campus, Pathway students
attend classes and participate with UCLA
students in the many social, recreational, and
cultural activities of a major university."

disabilities calls for greater safety training.
Programs like Project GET SAFE in hospitals,
schools, day treatment programs, and
residential facilities help reduce safety risks
and protect the vulnerable segment of our
population. This includes individuals with
disabilities, children, and seniors. Please visit

lessons.
Common shortage of manpower in hospitals,
residential facilities, and day treatment
programs can lead to insufficient monitoring
during moments that are critical to personal
safety. Furthermore, individuals with disabilities
have challenges reporting abuse, neglect, or
danger. Assistive technology is a safeguard
and can be ubiquitous when humans are not.
