Lesson: Unit 7: “The Era of High- Tech Pollution”
Textbook: Mission 2
Type of lesson: Lesson of fixation of knowledge and of developing skills.
Skills: Speaking, Reading, Writing
Aim: To develop student’s vocabulary around the topic of pollution.
Objectives:
1. To remember and practice previously learnt vocabulary.
2. To acquire new knowledge and use it in different contexts.
3. To develop speaking and reading skills.

Teaching aids: notebooks, textbooks, blackboard, handouts, laptop and video-projector.


Methods: conversation, controlled, semi-controlled and free practice.
Learning activity: individual work, pair work, group work.
Assessment: oral, systematic observation, homework.
Previous knowledge: Most of the students already know some things about this topic, from
other subjects. Some of them might know some English vocabulary related to the topic from
other sources.
Anticipated problems:
 Students might find it difficult to express orally, in English, their opinions and knowledge.
 Some of them might find difficulty in identifying the correct answer for the listening task.
 Students might feel nervous and find difficulty in doing some semi-controlled or free practice
exercises.
CONTENTS
Activity 1- Warm up
Objective: To create a pleasant atmosphere for learning.
Time: 2 minutes

Activity/class organisation: The teacher greets the class and checks attendance.

Activity 2- Check up the homework


Objective: To find out students` difficulties in doing the homework and give them feed back.

Time: 6 minutes

Activity/class organisation: The teacher asks the students to open their notebooks and read the
homework. Some students are asked to come to the blackboard and write their answers, if
necessary. The teacher offers feedback.

Activity 3: Lead in
Objective: To activate students’ previous knowledge.
To develop speaking skills.

Time: 8 minutes

Context: The beginning of the new lesson.

Activity/class organisation: The students are asked to listen to a song and guess the topic of the
new unit, then they have to look at some images related to the theme introduced and brainstorm
different types of pollution, give a definition to the term, identify its causes, etc. In the discussion
are brought too some ideas from the warm-up activities in the book. In the end of this stage the
students are also asked to work in pairs and fill in the gaps from the summary in the warm up
section in the book.

Resources: laptop, video-projector, textbook.

Language: Ss’ previous knowledge.

Anticipated problems: Ss may not master the necessary vocabulary for this task.

Activity 4: Presentation
Objective: To introduce new vocabulary.
To develop speaking and reading skills.

Time: 12 minutes

Context: Students’ previous knowledge.


Activity/class organisation: The teacher asks the students to read the new text and try to guess
the meaning of the unknown words. The most puzzling vocabulary items are provided by the
teacher on a handout. Then the teacher asks the students to find the most suitable heading for
each paragraph, from the ones given in the book.

Resources: handouts, notebooks, textbooks, blackboard.

Language: all and any.

Anticipated problems: Students may not be able to fill in the gaps correctly.

Activity 5: Practice
Objective: To practice the new structures.

Time: 10 minutes

Context: The practice of the newly acquired vocabulary.

Activity/class organisation: The teacher asks the students to do the next three exercises from
the textbook. At each exercise she gives them support and feedback.

Resources: textbook, notebooks, blackboard.

Language: all and any.

Anticipated problems: Ss may not be able to do all the exercises correctly.

Activity 6: Production

Objective: To practice the new structures.

To develop speaking skills.

Time: 10 minutes

Context: The practice of the newly acquired vocabulary.

Activity/class organisation: The teacher asks the students to work in groups and write a report/
an article for our local newspaper, about our town. They have to outline how they think our town
is dealing with the problems of pollution, rubbish and recycling and make recommendations as
to how these could be improved.

Resources: handouts.

Language: all and any.


Anticipated problems: Ss may not be able to do the task in the time required.

Activity 7: Giving the homework

Objective: To practice the new structures.

Time: 2 minutes.

Context: The end of the English class.

Activity/class organisation The teacher assigns the homework by giving clear instructions.
Then she congratulates the students and rewards good feedback.

Resources: textbooks.

Language: all and any.

Anticipated problems: Ss may not understand clearly what they have to do at home.
WORKSHEET 1

Write a report for your local magazine about your town. Outline how you think your town is
dealing with the problems of pollution, rubbish and recycling and make recommendations as to
how these could be improved.
