ADSL

(Asymmetrix Digital Suscriber Line)

Asymmetric digital subscriber line. Digital transmission system on copper wire, fiber optic, that
by its characteristics.

ATM

(Asynchronous Transfer Mode).

Back-up

Backup of the files or applications available in a magnetic support (usually floppy disks), in
order to be able to recover the information and the applications in case of a hard disk failure,
an accidental deletion or an unexpected accident.

Backup

(security) Additional resources or duplicate copies of data such as emergency prevention.

BAK file. Extension of DOS and OS / 2 files for backup files.

Banda base

Communications technology that uses a single carrier frequency and requires stations

Bandwidth. Capacity of a transmission medium.


Database

(DataBase). Set of related data that is stored in a way that can be accessed in a simple way,
with the possibility to derelate them, sort them based on different criteria, etc. Databases are
one of the most-watched groups of personal productivity applications. Among the best known
can be mentioned dBase, Paradox, AccessyAproach, for PC environments, and Oracle, ADABAS,
DB / 2, Informix or Ingres, for medium and large systems.

Distributed database

Database installed in a network environment in which its components are resolved (See:
Reside) in more than one system. It also allows access, modification and updating of the data it
contains, from any of the connected systems, in a synchronized manner.

BCP

(Process Control Block) Each process is represented in the operating system with a process
control block (PCB, process controlblock), also called task control block. It contains the
information elements associated with a specific process, saving them in the memory.

BOOT

Start, start the operation of the computer. Have the computer start the execution of
instructions personal computers contain pre-installed instructions on a ROM chip, which are

A term resulting from abbreviating bridge and router that refers to communication devices that
include characteristics of both types of products.
