Procedure

Part A : Preparation of Methyl Red Standard Solution

1. 5ml of methyl red stock solution was pipette into a 100ml volumetric flask and it was
done at the fume chamber.
2. 50ml of ethanol (95%) was added into the volumetric flask and it was diluted with
distilled water until mark level.
3. The volumetric flask was shaken until the solution was homogeneous.

Part B : Preparation of Methyl Red Acidic and Basic Solutions

i) Acidic Solution of Methyl Red (pH≈1)

1. 6ml of methyl red solution was pipette from part A into a 50ml volumetric flask.
2. 10ml of hydrochloric acid, HCl (0.1M) was added into the volumetric flask using
measuring cylinder and it was done at the fume chamber.
3. The solution was diluted with distilled water until mark level and was shaken
until the solution was homogeneous.
4. The pH of the solution was checked by using a pH meter.
5. The pH of the solution and observation of its colour was recorded.

ii) Basic Solution of Methyl Red (pH≈13)

1. 5ml of methyl red solution was pipette from part A into a 50ml volumetric flask.
2. 10ml of sodium hydroxide, NaOH (1.0M) was added into the volumetric flask
using measuring cylinder and it was done at the fume chamber.
3. The solution was diluted with distilled water until mark level and was shaken
until the solution was homogeneous.
4. The pH of the solution was checked by using a pH meter.
5. The pH of the solution and observation of its colour was recorded.

Part C : Absorption Spectrum of Methyl Red at various pH

1. A series of methyl red standard solutions (A-H) were prepared in 50ml volumetric flask.

2. 6ml of methyl red standard solution from part A was pipetted into a 50ml volumetric
flask and was labeled as A.
3. 12ml of acetic acid (0.2M) and 8ml of sodium acetate (0.2M) were added into the
volumetric flask by using measuring cylinder and it was done at the fume chamber.
4. The mixture in the volumetric flask was diluted with distilled water until mark level.
5. The volumetric flask was shaken until the solution is homogeneous and the pH of the
solution was measured by using a pH meter.
6. Step 2 until 5 were repeated with solution B until H with the given volume of methyl red
standard solution, acetic acid (0.2M) and sodium acetate (0.2M) from table 1.
7. Wavelength scan were performed for all the solutions including acidic and basic solutions
of methyl red from part B.
8. The absorption spectrum for each solution were recorded on each different paper.
