U.S. Representative Joe Walsh (R-IL) ran successfully for Congress in 2010 by promoting himself as
an every-day kind-of-guy that experienced the same pit-falls as his constituents during the "Great
Recession."
When it was revealed Walsh was evicted from his condominium and was foreclosed upon, Walsh
seized the moment and successfully argued that he lived a meager life, never made a bunch o f m oney
and endured the same financial hardships millions of other Americans suffered during the mortgage
cr1s1s.
"The Two-Bedroom Unit Went Into Foreclosure In 2008 And Walsh Was
Evicted Last Fall, Cook County Circuit Court Records And Real-Estate Reports
Indicate." (Russell Lissau, "He Stopped Paying For His Condo, T hen Won A P rimary," Chicago Dai!J Herald, 3/3/10)
Walsh's inability, or refusal to make good on a mortgage m ay be excusable if it were only a one-time
thing, but many of his actions over the years paint a picture of a man with serious character issues.
Dating back to the 1990s, Walsh was slapped with several state and federal tax liens for failure to pay
taxes:
"Starting In 1992, Walsh Was Handed Several Liens For Failing To Pay State
And Federal Income Taxes, Together Totaling Nearly $25,000, According T o
Records From The Cook County Recorder Of Deeds." (Kerry Lester, "8tl, Congressional
Candidate's Money Woes Date Back To 1990's," Chicago Dai!J Herald, 10/19/10)
Recently, Walsh was accused of not paying more than $100,000 in b ack child support to his ex-wife:
"Freshman U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh, A Tax-Bashing Tea Party Champion Who
Sharply Lectures President Barack Obama And Other Democrats On Fiscal
Responsibility, Owes More Than $100,000 In Child Support To His Ex-Wife
And Three Children, According To Documents His Ex-Wife Filed In Their
Divorce Case In December." (Abdon M. Pallasch, "Rep. Sued For Child Support," ChicagoSun-Times, 7/ 28/ 11)
"His License Was Suspended Twice In 2008 For His Failure To Appear In
Court, And He Was Cited In 2009 For Driving On A Suspended License,
According To The Illinois Secretary Of State." (Abdon M. Pallasch, "Rep. Sued For Child Support,"
Chicago Sun-Times, 7/28/11)
Walsh's questionable character issues extend beyond foreclosures, tax liens, suspended licenses, and
nasty allegations over child support payments between a divorced-couple.
Soon after announcing he would run against then-U.S. Representative Melissa Bean (D-IL) in 2009,
Walsh's campaign manager Keith Liscio left the campaign. Liscio later sued Walsh over the campaign's
failure to make good on money owed to Liscio. That suit was settled out of court:
"A Lawsuit Filed Against U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh By A Former Campaign
Manager Who Said He Was Owed $20,000 Has Been Settled, Said Sheldon Perl,
A Lawyer For The Man Who Brought The Case Against The Freshman Illinois
Republican." (Katherine Skiba, "Walsh May Have 1 Less Suit To Fight," ChicagoTrib,me, 8/16/11)
Walsh's trouble with top campaign staff didn't end with the departure of Liscio. In May 2010, Walsh's
top aides, as well as hundreds of volunteers, departed the campaign, citing "lies" and "deception":
"The Staffers Say Walsh, The Winnetka Republican Running In The 8th
District, Has Lied Numerous Times." (Kerry Lester, "Walsh's Staffers Walk Out Of Office," Chicago
Daily Herald, 5/3/10)
Even though Walsh definitively said he would never vote for someone campaigning to represent a
Congressional District they didn't live in, Walsh ran for Illinois' 8th Congressional District ... a District
he didn't live in:
"'I Would Never Vote For Someone Who Didn't Live In The District,' Walsh
Said. 'I JUSt Wouldn't."' (Russell Lissau, "Candidate Or Carpetbagger?" Chicago Dai!J Herald, 1I25/10)
"And Yet, Walsh Is Running In The 8th, Which Means He Won't Be Able To
Vote For Himself In The Feb. 2 Primary." (Russell Lissau, "Candidate Or Carpetbagger?" Chicago
Dai!J Herald, 1/25/10)
"'There Is Irony (In That),' He Said." (Russell Lissau, "Candidate Or Carpetbagger?" Chicago Dai!J
Herald, 1/25/10)
As a candidate for Congress in 1996, Walsh campaigned as a social liberal, declaring he wasn't like
then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich and "no right-wing conservative." Walsh declared he was pro-
choice, supported a ban on assault weapons and favored gay rights. Then, when running in 2010
against Bean, Walsh adopted diametrically opposed viewpoints:
"As He's Campaigned For The Suburban 8th District Congressional Seat,
Republican Joe Walsh Has Painted Himself As A Staunch Conservative Who
Opposes Abortion And Gun Control, Among Other Issues." (Russell Lissau, "Why Views
Of Candidate For 8tl, Congressional District Changed," Chicago Dai!J Herald, 1/14/10)
"But When He First Ran For Congress In 1996, Walsh Was A Social Liberal
Who Supported Abortion Rights, Gay Rights And An Assault-Weapon Ban
While Maintaining Other Traditional Republican Stances." (Russell Lissau, "Why Views
Of Candidate For 8"' Congressional District Changed," Chicago Dai!J Herald, 1/14/10)
Walsh explained away his apparent flip-flops on a number of issues by saying he had been on a
"spiritual journey" and became educated on the various topics:
"His Feelings About Abortion Changed In 2003 After Spending Several Years
On A Spiritual Joumey, He Said." (Russell Lissau, "Why Views Of Candidate For 8 b Congressional District
1
"And His Views On Gun Control Shifted After Being Educated On Assault
Wea pons." (Russell Lissau, "Why Views Of Candidate For 8th Congressional District Changed," Chicago Daily Herald,
1/14/10)
"As For Gay Rights, He Took A Liberal Stance Then 'Because I Was Running
In Evanston, Ill.' Walsh Said, Referring To The Largely Left-Leaning City
Where He Lived At The Time." (Russell Lissau, ''Why Views Of Candidate For 8"' Congi-essiona\ District
Changed," Chicago Dai/y Herald, 1/14/10)
As a Member of Congress, Walsh has demonstrated a temperament more in line with former U.S.
Representative Alan Grayson (D-FL) than a Distinguished Gentleman from Illinois. Walsh has
displayed a number of foot-in-mouth moments recently, including publicly accusing the President of
the U.S. of lying about raising the debt limit and said journalists gave President Barack Obama a free
pass in the 2008 Presidential election because of "white guilt," among other things:
''Why Was He Elected? Again, It Comes Back To Who He Was. He Was Black,
He Was Historic. And There's Nothing Racist About This. It Is What It Is ...
. They Were In Love With Him Because They Thought He Was A Good Liberal
Guy And They Were In Love With Him Because He Pushed That Magical
Button: A Black Man Who Was Articulate, Liberal, The Whole White Guilt, All
Of That." (David Weigel, "What Did He Just Say?" .IL; , 5/26/11)
As critics on both sides of the aisle say, Walsh will do or say anything that has a politically beneficial
outcome, making the freshman Congressman the "Michele Bachmann of Illinois."
"Though Democrats Detest Him And Critics In His Own Republican Party,
Through Clenched Teeth, Argue He Will Say Or Do Anything That Pays Off
Politically, Joe Walsh Is Attracting Campaign Cash, Cable TV Attention And
Concern." (Carol Marin, ''.Joe Walsh The New Tea Party Fave," Chicago Sun-Time.,; 7/31/11)
In 2010, The Chicago Tribune endorsed Bean over Walsh, stating there were too many questions about
Walsh:
"There Are Way T 00 Many Questions About Walsh." (Editorial, "For The U.S. House," Chicago
Tribune, 10/7/10)
The Chicago Tribune was right, but now many of those questions have been answered. Walsh is unfit to
serve as a U.S. Congressman.

"The Daily Herald Asked The Candidates Several Questions Related To The Primary. Here
Is What The Hopefuls Had To Say When Asked About Their Top Three Priorities." (Russell
Lissau, "Congressional Hopefuls See Need To Reduce Spending," Chicago Daily Herald, 1/15/10)
Walsh:
1. "The most urgent priority for our nation today is halting and reversing the
unprecedented explosion in government spending. l will fight to cut spending, reduce
taxes and return to a balanced budget. Residents of the 8th Congressional District will
benefit most from my efforts to lower taxes and eliminate the crushing debt that is
being passed onto our kids and grandkids." (Russell Lissau, "Congressional Hopefuls See Need To Reduce
Spending," Chicago Dai(y Herald, 1/15/10)
2. "Entitlement reform. Medicare and Social Security are both well-loved but ill-
conceived programs. As our population ages and retirees live longer, beneficiaries are
putting increased strains on those paying into the system far beyond anything that was
originally anticipated." (Russell Lissau, "Congressional Hopefuls See Need To Reduce Spending," Chicago Dai(y
Herald, 1/ 15/ 10)
"The unfunded liabilities of both programs dwarf the official national debt, and unless
some changes are made, these programs will soon gobble up our country's capacity to
spend on anything else." (Russell Lissau, "Congressional Hopefuls See Need To Reduce Spending," Chicago Daily
Herald, 1/15/10)
"The problem, of course, is that special interest groups have prevented any meaningful
reform of either of these programs and both parties pillory political opponents who
even propose any changes. I'll try to avoid that trap here." (Russell Lissau, "Congressional Hopefuls
See Need To Reduce Spending," Chicago Dai(y Herald, 1/15/10)
"These issues can only be solved when members of both parties recognize the
magnitude of the problem and agree to work in a bipartisan way to address them. l
think that time is near, but events playing out in Congress demonstrate that we are not
there yet. The President's health care proposals effectively perpetuate the Ponzi
scheme-like character that epitomizes both Social Security and Medicare." (Russell Lissau,
"Congressional Hopefuls See Need To Reduce Spending," Chicago Daily Herald, 1/15/10)
"Ultimately, the answer will require some mechanism for individuals to set aside a
portion of their own income for their own retirement and health care. Only when
individuals have some responsibility for their own well-being will we be able to get a
handle on skyrocketing costs." (Russell Lissau, "Congressional Hopefuls See Need To Reduce Spending," Chicago
Daily Herald, 1/15/10)
"In the meantime, we must guarantee benefits to those already in these programs or
nearing retirement. Eventually, younger workers will need a new program to replace
these existing entitlements." (Russell Lissau, "Congressional Hopefuls See Need To Reduce Spending," Chicago
Dai(y Herald, 1/15/10)
3. "Additionally, I will provide federal leadership to extend Route 53 into Lake County.
This project has been on the drawing board for over 40 years and government inaction
