Helpful Information for First Grade Parents
First Grade will be a very exciting year! In our classrooms, your child will experience days filled with
fun and educational activities, including various opportunities for individualized learning and growing.
We will have a shared teacher assistant for our class.
1. Website: The first grade team has a website that will include information about what we are learning.
The address is http://scottsridgefirstgrade.weebly.com. A ll teacher websites can be accessed
through the first grade website.
2. Communication: Your child has a teal daily folder. Please check it DAILY and return the folder to
school each day. This folder is a great place for you to include notes for the teacher, lunch money,
field trip money, etc., as these folders will be checked each morning. It’s a wonderful, consistent place
for us to communicate daily! ☺ We primarily communicate through e-mail, so any time you have a
question or concern, please e-mail us and we will reply within 48 hours.
3. Homework: Homework in first grade will consist of spelling practice and nightly reading for at least 10
minutes. The spelling activities can be found at the bottom of the Letterland word list that your child
will receive each Monday. These activities do not need to be returned. A spelling test will be given each
Friday. In addition, your child will be required to complete any unfinished classwork for homework.
That work should be returned the following day.
4. Snack: We will have a snack each day. Please send a piece of washed and prepared fruit or veggies, or
another healthy snack. We appreciate you saving cookies and chips for lunchtime or a special treat at
home. Your child may bring a non-spill water bottle (for example, a Camelbak). Please do not send
additional drinks for snack time as we have a water fountain in the classroom. Thank you!
5. Birthdays: We would love to celebrate your child’s birthday in class. Per Scotts Ridge policy, any type
of food for birthday treats is not allowed. However, on his or her birthday your child’s name will be
announced during the Morning Wave news program and he or she will be invited to the office to receive
a special SRE pencil. We will celebrate in the classroom by singing “Happy Birthday” during our Morning
Meeting. Also, parents are invited to read a special story of your child’s choice to the class. Please
email your child’s teacher to arrange a time that works best.
6. Dress: Please dress your child appropriately for the weather as well as First Grade activities (paint,
markers, etc.). Daily outdoor play is part of our curriculum. We would encourage you to have your child
wear sneakers every day, or to keep a pair in his/her backpack. During warm weather, it may be
beneficial to leave a sweater/sweatshirt in school, as the air conditioning may cause the room to be
cool. Label all clothing and water bottles with your child’s name. Also, please send a non-spill (for
example a Camelbak) water bottle to school with your child. School staff members are not permitted to
apply sunscreen to students.
7. Lunch: If your child will buy a school lunch, we strongly encourage putting lunch money in a cafeteria
account. If your child will bring a lunchbox to school, please practice opening containers and cleaning up
at home. Please note that carbonated beverages are not permitted in the cafeteria. Lunch boxes and
water bottles must be labeled with your child’s name. Parents are welcome to come for lunch after
the first week. Please meet us at the cafeteria.
8. Transportation: Please notify your child’s teacher IN WRITING if your child’s transportation will
change on a particular day, week, or month. If the change is last-minute, please call the school. We will
always send the children home via the usual mode of transportation unless a written note (or call to
the school) is provided. Please do not e-mail with last minute transportation changes, as we will
not be able to check my e-mail before dismissal.
9. Conferences: Parent-Teacher conferences will be held on October 9. We will email a sign-up link and
post it on our website when the time is drawing near. Also, student-led conferences will be held during
the third quarter. Unfortunately, due to the activity during the school day, we are unavailable to
conference with you unless an appointment is scheduled. This allows us to give undivided attention to
the children during the school day and we can properly sit down to discuss your child’s growth and
progress.
10. Scholastic: We will be participating in the Scholastic Book Club. All book orders must be placed online.
The first flyer and instructions on how to order will be sent the first week. Please don’t feel obligated
to order books, but keep in mind that we are able to purchase books for our classroom library using
points earned from parent purchases.
Thank you for taking the time to read these “helpful hints”. Please let us know if you have any questions. We
look forward to a very successful school year with you and your child.
Sincerely,
The 1st Grade Team
