ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS

1. Explain the terms perigee and apogee with respect to satellite 2 Marks
orbiting the earth?
2. The average orbital distance of Jupiter is 5.2 times the average
orbital distance of the earth. It is graphically represented in figure 1.
Knowing that the earth orbits the sun approximately 365 days. Use
Kepler’s law of hormonie’s to predict the time for Jupiter to orbit
the sun.

3. A satellite in an elliptical orbit around the earth has an apogee of
39,500 km and a perigee of 550 km as given in figure 2. What is the
orbital period of this satellite? Give your answer in hours. Assume 4 Marks
the average radius of the earth is 6,738.17 km and Kepler’s constant
has the value 3.986004418 x 105 km3/s2.

7. An earth station has a diameter of 30m and an overall efficiency of
69%. It is used to receive a signal of 4150MHZ. At this frequency,
the system noise temperature is 79K. When the antenna points at the
satellite at an elevation angle of 28 degree. a) what is the earth 4 Marks
station G/T under these conditions? b) if heavy rain causes the sky
temperature increases to 88K, what is the change in G/T value? c)
calculate the receiver power with an effective collecting antenna of
10m2 aperture?
